The Voice Season 14 Song Spoilers – Knockouts 2

For the first time ever, each of the coaches will enlist the help of former The Voice winners to help team members prepare their performances. Team Adam has enlisted the help of Season 9 winner Jordan Smith. Team Blake has joined forces with reigning champ Chloe Kohanski, Season 13 winner Chris Blue has lent a hand to Team Alicia and Season 3 winner Cassadee Pope has helped Team Kelly.

Team members are paired up. After each singer performs a solo, their respective coach chooses a winner to move on to the Live Playoffs. The loser is eliminated unless stolen by another coach. A new twist this season allows each coach to save one contestant they feel deserves to move on. One save and one steal per coach. Twenty four singers will remain at the end of the round.

Brynn Cartelli vs Jamella – Team Kelly Clarkson

Brynn considers herself a soul artist. She’s only 14 and has never had a sad goodbye. Anyway, she really likes this Rascal Flatts song. Cassadee is impressed by the young singer. Kelly calls her a “born storyteller.” Kelly gives her some tips on how to stay on pitch. “Your falsetto is money,” says Cassadee. Jamella’s single mom supported her despite their poverty. Jamella is singing Girl Crush. Kelly is so impressed with her rehearsal, she begins throwing stuff. Kelly shares some breathing tricks. Kelly mulls using her save on this one. It’s going to be tough, she says.

Brynn Cartelli – Team Kelly Clarkson – Here Comes Goodbye by Rascal Flatts – Brynn’s interpretation of this song is impressively mature. She’s also incorporating Kelly’s notes. Brynn is already a pro at 14, able to deliver a song that packs an emotional punch. – Download at iTunes

Jamella – Girl Crush by Little Big Town – This is also a strong performance. Jamella has a pleasing husky tone and beautiful phrasing. But Brynn was outstanding. She should move on.

Alicia says compliments Jamella’s style. she calls Brynn mature. Adam says he has to go with Brynn, although they are both good. Blake felt Jamella put her spin on the song. He loves Brynn’s vibrato. Kelly compliments them both. But Kelly Chooses Brynn. Jamella is eliminated.

Pryor Baird vs Jaron Strom – Team Blake Shelton

Jaron’s grandfather introduced him to Motown music. His parents are also singers–performing gospel music. Chloe has a few solid vocal tips for Jaron.  The Voice is Pryor’s reintroduction to music after he put his career on hold for family. Chloe teaches Pryor how to find that “moment” that will impress the coaches and audience alike.

Pryor Baird – Team Blake Shelton – Will it Go Round in Circles by Billy Preston – This is an odd song choice. Not a classic really. Only the old folks probably recognize it. The song suits his growly soulful voice. Overall, he’s a throwback. It would be nice to see a more contemporary side at some point. Kelly says, a little overheated, “They’re going to start throwing bras and stuff!” – Download at iTunes

Jaron Strom – Grenade by Bruno Mars – Hm… I’m underwhelmed. He’s not a bad singer. He hit all the notes, but he has no charisma and seemed nervous the entire time.

Kelly and Alicia both compliment Pryor’s tone. Adam believes Pryor is more ready than Jaron. Blake notes the way Jaron nervously kept pacing the stage. Yes…That was distracting. Blake shooses Pryor. Jaron is eliminated. Oh. Blake calls Pryor a “front runner.”

Christiana Danielle vs Terrence Cunningham – Team Alicia Keys

Christiana had throat surgery in high school, and was told she’d never sing again. She says Alicia has been challenging her to stretch as an artist. Christiana has sung mostly worship music. Alicia says Christiana has the ability to reinterpret songs, comparing her to disparate artists. Chris compares Christiana to “chocolate under a hot lamp…she has a way of sucking you into every word.”  Terrence put his music career on hold after having a child at 16. He has decided to switch up from ballads this time. Alicia tells Terrence to “turn up the fire…don’t hold back.” Chris advises Terrence to ditch being the nice guy–this is a competition! Alicia feels that they BOTH have some digging to do.

Christiana Danielle – Team Alicia Keys – Elastic Heart by Sia – The arrangement is slowed down from the original, which allows Christiana to build the story bit by bit until it explodes into an emotional crescendo. Really love her vibrato. That was pretty great. – Download at iTunes

Terrence Cunningham – Team Alicia Keys – Tell Me Something Good by Chaka Khan – Terrence performs behind electric keys. It’s another inventive arrangement from Terrence. He hits ALL THE HIGH NOTES here while maintaining a super-sexy groove. If Terrence doesn’t make the finals, I’ll be shocked. – Download at iTunes

Adam thinks Christiana has more to show us. He’s blown away by Terrence’s upper register. Kelly has “total church giggles. THAT MOVED ME.” She calls Christiana “insane.” She finds them both equally talented. Blake felt the song was challenging for Christiana at first. Alicia reminds everyone that Terrence sang the song in Chaka’s key! Alicia chooses Terrence. Then Alicia SAVES Christiana. But then Kelly Steals her. “Perhaps you want to be the first choice!” she says. Whoops. Adam Steals Christiana too. But isn’t really wooing her–just wanted to show his support (?) Alicia says she’d be devastated to lose her. Christiana Chooses Alicia No surprise–Christina is obviously really attached to her mentor.
