Sadie Dahl Shows Off with “Colors” on The Voice and turns 4 chairs

Week 2 of The Voice Season 28 Blind Auditions kicked off on Monday night with an episode that leaned country heavy. However, the final audition of the night featured a vocal full of intrigue that came from 19-year-old, Sadie Dahl.

Sadie, a manager of a sensory deprivation spa, from Draper, Utah who graduated from high school about a year ago, feels surreal about being at The Voice. She performs at some local gigs, sometimes hums melodies at work, and states that music is her end goal.

Grandma is a The Voice Superfan

At her audition, her mom and Grandma, Linda join her. Grandma, a The Voice superfan, watches the show in several countries. Linda is 71, a cancer survivor, and still works as a nurse. She inspires Sadie. She also gives her granddaughter the advice to sing from the heart as she says, “The coaches turn when they feel emotion.”

Sadie sings “Colors” by The Black Pumas. Niall Horan immediately turns after a soulful opening. Michael Bublé shortly follows, realizing Niall has blocked him. The singer then proceeds to hit some perfectly executed runs and riffs which get Reba McEntire to turn and finally Snoop Dogg turns towards the end.

While Sadie is a more traditional R&B, pop singer, the song choice leans a bit bluesy. She finishes it all off with a belt. It feels like she was showing off a bit which I don’t mind as I realize the purpose of an audition is to make a big first impression. And she does just that. I would advise in the future that she builds the dynamics more while balancing the runs throughout.

“I love how you never wavered, it actually got better”

“I hear a little bit of everything, and I see how you can have your way with it,” Snoop observes, noting her stage presence and ability to tackle multiple genres. Niall jokes about blocking Michael, and tells her, “I love how you never wavered, it actually got better.” He makes a strong pitch about curating a portfolio of performances to show off to record labels post-show. Reba declares that she can win the whole show, adding, “It’s so different what you do.” Michael, disappointed that he is blocked, pitches for Reba and Snoop, and then jokes, “Niall, he’s good too.”

Snoop makes one last statement, suggesting, “Just dare to be different, which reasonates with Sadie as she picks Snoop Dogg for her coach. It’s a bold move given Niall and Michael’s success, but Sadie should be able to stand out on Snoop’s team.

Sadie wasn’t the only one to wow on Monday night. Opener Cori Kennedy gave a strong country vocal on “Why Not Me,” joining Team Reba, in one of the more conventional pairings of the night. Team Bublé’s Marty O’Reilly showed some grit delivering a storytelling vocal on “Trouble.” Finally, to end the first hour, country singer Kayleigh Clark sang with emotion on Sugarland’s “Stay,” turning four chairs and surprisingly opting to go with Niall as her coach over Reba.
