The Voice 28: Cori Kennedy covers the Judds, sings an original song about the coaches
The Voice 28 Blind Auditions continue for round 3 on Monday (Sept 29) with coaches Michael Bublé, Reba McEntire, Niall Horan and Snoop Dogg. The teams of 12 are filling up fast, with artists such as country singer Cori Kennedy, seen here in a preview from NBC.
Cori performs the Judds’ “Why Not Take Me,” employing a twangy throwback style. Reba takes a minute to hit her button, but she is the first to turn. Michael is next. Liam dances enthusiastically in his seat to Cori’s easy breezy interpretation, her vocals tinged with a bit of rasp. But he and Snoop stay put.
Afterward, she asks the coaches if they’d like to hear a song she wrote about meeting them and competing on The Voice. It’s a clever device to illustrate her country lifestyle in the midwest. “My grandma won’t believe me that I’m singing on The Voice,” she croons. It’s also a smart way to illustrate her impressive songwriting skills on a show that won’t allow artists to sing originals in competition. “I was only smitten for Harry in my One Direction days.” Cori jokes slyly. She’s good! Snoop is so impressed, he requests more originals from the singer.
Cori’s performance chokes Reba up a bit and makes her homesick. “Your voice is wonderful,” she gushes, “Such power.” Michael describes her as country, with a little mix of Stevie Nicks. For some reason, he believes that showing off his Reba socks is a winning strategy! Snoop says he didn’t turn because he knew Reba had it in the bag. And she probably does! But fans will have to wait until The Voice 28 Blind Auditions 3 airs on NBC Monday September 29 to find out.
The Voice airs on NBC Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 pm ET/PT, streaming on Peacock the next day.
