Whoo! I have finally caught up with this week’s The Voice. Here are a few of my thoughts.

The Knockout rounds new twist “the save” ensures that post performance antics between the coaches are even more chaotic than usual, which is, I’m sure, the goal. But don’t kill me–it all feels like the result of some pre-show production meeting: OK Adam you’re gonna pit two strong female singers against each other and then save the loser! Next, Kelly and Blake will try and steal her. BUT THEN PLOT TWIST ALICIA JUMPS IN AT THE LAST MINUTE! The singer actually choosing Alicia is the icing on the cake. Heh. I mean who knows. The whole deal just did not feel organic to me. And it fit quite nicely into the Adam as sad sack narrative that’s been going on for awhile. (OH. And somebody remind Kelly to quit looking down at her notes so dang much.)

What did feel like a breath of fresh air, however–bringing The Voice winners back to mentor the contestants. I was really impressed with Chloe Kochanski’s very pointed advice to the contestants. She had some great vocal tips. Also, post show interviews with Chloe made it clear how she carefully strategized her way to a win, with Blake’s help. Getting far in a singing competition takes more than just great singing ability. Esteemed winners such as Chloe, Chris Blue, Jordan Smith and Cassadee Pope really have something extra to offer contestants in the way of help. I mean I’m sorry, but Taylor Swift et al have literally no idea how to win a singing competition.

And winning a singing competition may once again be in the cards for Alicia Keys. WOW her team is stacked. Fellow coaches may want to take note: I truly believe her decision to go all in on Chris Blue’s career has made her very attractive indeed as a prospective coach. I am just saying!

At the Knockout round stage, the field is finally coming into focus for me. My favorites so far: Mia Boostrom (she’s coming into her own!), Johnny Bliss (not a perfect performance from Johnny, but his passion was undeniable), Drew Cole (dude could be a dark horse), Spensha Baker (she’s got something special), Terrence Cunningham (vocal range and overall musicality are out of this world). Honorable mentions go to Christiana Danielle (thought her performance this week was something special) and oddly, Kaleb Lee (I usually don’t gravitate to the male country singers, but he hit a real high mark this week).

With 14 more performances to go, next Monday will be the last of the Knockouts. Clip show on Tuesday! Which is just as well considering the ratings competition from Roseanne.
