The Voice Season 14 Song Spoilers – Battle Rounds 4

Each of the coaches will enlist the help of celebrity mentors to ready their teams for battle. Team Adam enlists the help of Julia Michaels, Team Blake joins forces with Trace Adkins, Shawn Mendes lends a hand to Team Alicia and Hailee Steinfeld helps Team Kelly.  The winner of the battle moves on to the Knockouts. The loser is eliminated…or stolen by another coach. Each coach will round out their team with two steals.

Only Alicia has a steal remaining.

Jackie Verna vs Stephanie Skipper – Team Adam Levine – These Dreams by Heart – Stephanie sang Piece by Piece in her audition, moving Kelly. Jackie was in a terrible car accident that messed up her face. She’s recovered now. Adam chose the song because he feels that the 80s classic will challenge them. Alison Krauss covered it–Jackie’s having trouble committing to a version. The girls struggle a little with the harmonies. Adam suggests they look at each other while they sing. Jackie admits she has stage fright. Julia confesses she has it too–she suggests an altar ego. At the studio rehearsal, Adam is proud that the duo improved so much.

The two are singing different versions of the song, which is not good for their chemistry. Jackie has more of a country twang. I’m not convinced the song is right for either of them, actually. Stephanie has kind of an odd vibrato. In any case, the performance feels off center. Stephanie came alive in the second half of the song. I’m not sure who I’d give it to. Blake felt there were notable moments, but the song isn’t in either’s wheelhouse. He’d pick the country Jackie. Adam is annoyed by that. Kelly is sticking with Stephanie because she sang her song. Alicia feels Stephanie has more artistic self awareness, but Jackie has raw talent. Adam saw a lot of growth from Jackie, and looks forward to mentoring her. Adam Chooses Jackie. Stephanie is Eliminated.  –  Download from iTunes

Livia Faith vs Terrence Cunningham – Team Alicia Keys – Stars by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals – She’s the young, quirky singer who covered “Dream a Little Dream of Me” in the Blinds. Terrence got four chairs for an original arrangement of “My Girl.” His aunt is a folk/jazz legend. He had a daughter at 16 and put his career on hold for her.  Shawn suggests they really listen to each other as they sing. Alicia suggests that Terrence accompany them both on piano, while Livia worries the song is too rangy. At the studio rehearsal, the two find their comfort level. Alicia got goosebumps.

They both bring a sweet vulnerability to the performance. Terrence, though, is something really special. He has a soulfulness that’s ethereal. Livia is a young talent with lots of potential. I love her phrasing. The performance as a whole is lovely. Adam calls Terrence soothing, Livia a diamond in the rough.  Kelly felt Terrence was a generous duet partner. Blake felt they created a moment together. Alicia Chooses Terrance. Livia is Eliminated. That was the right choice. However, I’m going to miss Livia in the competition. I wanted to hear more from her. –  Download from iTunes

Montages!

Angel Bonilla vs Gary Edwards – Team Adam Levine – When You Believe by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston – Adam Chooses Gary Angel is Eliminated. Wow. Angel, the first transgender contestant on The Voice, is TOTALLY montaged out. There’s a story there I bet – Download from iTunes

Austin Giorgio vs Brett Hunter – Team Blake Shelton – Me and Mrs Jones By Billy Paul – Blake Chooses Austin, Brett is Eliminated.  I thought Brett’s audition was impressive, so I’m a little surprised.- Download from iTunes

Alexa Cappelli vs Hannah Goebel – Team Kelly Clarkson – Pray by Sam Smith – Carson announces that Hannah had to leave the show. While Hannah and Alex recorded the song together, by the time the episodes were taped, Hannah was gone. Alex performed the song as a solo at the taping. WEIRD. Hannah’s exit must have been super last minute. What’s more, she was a 4 chair turn. Kelly used her block to keep Alicia from having her.  I wonder if we’ll ever find out what happened. Who will Alicia steal?

Dallas Caroline and Spensha Baker – Team Blake Shelton – I Could Use a Love Song by Maren Morris – Spensha started as a Gospel artist, dropped by a label. And then she gravitated to country. Dallas homeschooled  in order to pursue her musical dreams. After her hometown in Sonoma county was devastated by wildfires. She dedicated “You Were Always On My Mind” to them. As Spensha watches Dallas’ audition, she’s feeling intimidated! Blake admits it’s a tough song to sing. They have to start low, and they both have issues there. Trace really loves Spensha. Blake notes that Dallas is an accurate singer like Patty Loveless. Trace suggests they sing the song a little behind the beat.

I see Blake and Trace’s point about those low notes. Dallas in particular seems to struggle. But soon the song begins to soar and both singers open up. Spensha is country with sweet soulful overtones. Caroline has that classic country sound. Both are good! Kelly would go with Spensha if she had to pick. Alicia sensed Dallas’ nerves. Alicia would go with her, though, because of her potential. Adam says Dallas is one click away from being season 4 winner Danielle Bradbery. Blake Chooses Spensha. Alicia Steals Dallas! She wasted no time. Dallas didn’t even have time to thank Blake! –  Download from iTunes
