The Voice Season 13 Recap: Top 8 Semi-Finals Live Blog (VIDEO)

Will the FOUR singers leaving the competition be from Team Adam Levine, Team Blake Shelton, Team Miley Cyrus or Team Jennifer Hudson? We’ll be revealing all the details as they unfold.

Host Carson Daly calls the semi-finals the BIG penultimate week. Fancy words!  Blake has sent singers to 11 out of 12 The Voice finales. Tonight will certainly be no exception.

The Top 8 take the stage! Every artist hit the Top 25. Seven out of the Top 10 on the overall iTunes chart were from the show. And…tonight, I’m gonna skip blogging the dumb questions Carson asks the singers, unless the answers are interesting.

Here we go. The first finalist into the final is…Chloe Kohanski. Of course.

Oh. Chris Blue stars in a Toyota commercial. The Voice finally giving alums some serious promo.

Next, Machine Gun Kelly, X Ambassadors, and Bebe Rexha, perform their hit song “Home.”

Afterward, it’s more Chris Blue. See him hanging out with his manager/former coach, Alicia Keys, working on his new single which he’ll be debuting on next week’s finale.

The seven remaining semi finalists take the stage. And it’s no surprise. Addison Agen from Team Adam Levine takes the second spot in the final.

Next, it’s Jennifer Hudson performing her new song “Burden Down.”  It’s a ballad. As usual, she blows the roof off the joint. I had no idea that Jennifer played the piano.

The remaining singers are back. Time to reveal the THIRD singer moving on to next week’s finale. The third finalist is…Brooke Simpson. Wow. Yep. Miley didn’t have anyone in the finale season 11. That’s why Brooke got such a big push this week.

Next, the stars of The Voice Vegas take the stage. Chris Mann, Michael Sanchez, Alisan Porter, Mary Sarah, Matt McAndrew and Matthew Schuler take the stage to sing “It’s Time” by Imagine Dragons. They’ve been rehearsing! The show opens in the Hard Rock Cafe Vegas in June 2018.

The remaining five artists take the stage. The first artist performing for a spot in the finale is Adam Cunningham. WHAT. The bloodbath. ALWAYS full of surprises. The second artist performing for a spot in the finale is…Noah Mac. YES. The third artist performing for the instant save is…Red Marlow. Man. The two remaining African American artists are gone. Say goodbye to Keisha Renee from Team Blake and Davon Fleming from Team Jennifer.

Red Marlow – Dixieland Delight by Alabama – He performs an upbeat ditty. Super country. It’s OK, but not sing-for-your-life worthy. Blake says he’s had a hell of a ride so far, but it shouldn’t be over yet.

Adam Cunningham – Here’s a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares) by Travis Tritt – This song is similar to Red’s song. The two will probably split votes?  Coach Adam goes on and on about how he was nearly eliminated. ADAM IS THE STORY he declares.

Noah Mac – Sign of the Times – HE’S COVERING HARRY STYLES! And he’s performing last. Although Noah’s having some pitch problems…I think he’s got this. Jennifer says we need people in the industry like Noah who sing with their hearts. Well said. His emotional delivery made up for the tuning issues.

#VoiceSaveRed #VoiceSaveAdam #VoiceSaveNoah. Y’all got 5 minutes to vote.

And the fourth artist heading to the final is….Red Marlow. FUUU*****CK. We just couldn’t POSSIBLY have a finale without a Blake country artist. No way that was gonna happen. His save me song was BORING. Noah’s performance wasn’t perfect, but it was creative and PASSIONATE. I was looking forward to him performing an original song next week.

The vote was SO close. Noah was leading by a couple of points during the commercial break:

But then Red took the lead by the time the vote closed. Here’s the graphic right before it came down.

Blake and Adam have been coaches since season one and have considerable fan bases of their own. It’s why unremarkable singers like Red Marlow and Adam Cunningham don’t have to try nearly as hard as the singers from coaches who come and go. Especially Noah’s coach Jennifer Hudson—as a newbie and the least famous of the three coaches, she just didn’t have the juice to help send Noah over the finish line.

And consider that Blake is part of a power couple. Gwen Stefani was tweeting on behalf of Red tonight. Blake had HER fan base behind his team member as well.  In the end, The Voice is a game show with singing that features competition between superstar coaches. IT’S NOT ABOUT THE CONTESTANTS. And it should be! I’m not digging it.
