Anthony Alexander – 17 – Fontana CA – Redbone by Childish Gambino – This high school senior’s  dad works as a camera operator at many Hollywood shows including….wait for it…The Voice. Anthony calls his genre “pop/rock/soul. He sings in a constant falsetto. Needless to say, the lyrics are edited for TV (look them up). Adam hits his button quick. He loves those falsettos. When Anthony breaks out into the chorus, Miley and Jennifer turn their chairs. That was an odd song choice. Adam calls Blake stupid for not turning his chair. “I’m not going to be humiliated on this one,” is the reason he gives. Jhud thinks he’s adorable. She loves his Prince-like range. Miley admires his professionalism. Adam calls the diversity of his voice “special.” He’s eager to work on his high notes. Anthony mentions that he’s been on set before. Seems like the coaches don’t pay much attention to the camera guys. Anthony picks Team Adam Levine –  Download from iTunes

Sophia Bollman – 18 – Invincible by Kelly Clarkson – She performed in a rock band when she was a tween. Gene Simmons sends her a good luck video–she played with KISS at one point. She just graduated from high school and is ready for the music business. Nobody turns at first. Hm…she’s pretty pitchy. She’s nervous. Nobody turns, nobody turns, nobody turns until finally Blake and then Miley hit their buttons. Eh. She wasn’t anything special. Blake calls her voice “incredible.” He knows she’s not exactly in his lane. Miley notes her huge range, although she could use some work. Kelly, Pink and Miley are some of her favorite artists.  She thinks Blake would be a cool dad. Adam laughs his head off as he hugs Sophia for what he considers a put-down. Unsurprisingly, Sophia picks Team Miley Cyrus – Download from iTunes

Jessica Rowboat – 28 – Imagine by John Lennon – She moved to America from New Delhi India at 8 years old. Her family was undocumented. Her parents are classical Indian musicians, but stopped performing when they got to America. She feels they gave up everything to make a better life for the family. Happy ending though: Via marriage to an American, the entire family eventually became documented. She has an interesting, low pitched voice. Cool tone. But she’s having some pitch problems, and there’s very little variation from verse to chorus. Jennifer says she could feel her heart in the song. “You need to have that moment that is undeniable,” says Blake. Hopefuls, you need to hit those money notes to get a turn! No turns.

Karli Webster – 20 – Santa Clarita CA – You’re So Vain by Carly Simon – She a student at USC, taking music and accounting classes. She writes songs in her spare time. Carson visits her on campus, where she talks about her love for classic music. Adam and Miley turn immediately. I don’t know–her voice is kind of chimpunky? I suppose Miley relates. She loses vocal control a bit after she realizes the coaches have turned. Eh. I’m not impressed. Her tone is grating. She could do more dynamically with her phrasing, too. Nevertheless, Miley and Adam are standing, ready to fight. Adam believes she can “go all the way.” What? She was named after Carly Simon. Miley is looking forward to making a mark in “herstory.” Oy. Adam says her voice is his favorite. Karli chooses Team Miley Cyrus – Download from iTunes

Adam has no girls on his team. He’s sad.  I’m sure that will change by episode end (some things are so predictable.)

Stephan Marcellus – 26 – Englewood NJ – Take Me to Church by Hozier – His parents are from Guyana. He’s studying education in college, but realizes he wants to touch people spiritually through music. He messes up the first line? Or there was a technical issue. Jennifer hits her button anyway. He’s pretty good, once he got over that initial issue. He’s got confidence problems, though. Nobody else turned, unsurprisingly. Stephan says he didn’t hear the right note, initially. Jennifer says she turned because she’s been in the same position. On the Tony Awards, she explains, that she blacked out and forgot the words. Well, that was generous. O maybe she’s looking for cannon fodder – Team Jennifer Hudson chose Stephan – Download from iTunes

Emily Luther – 24 – Summertime by Ella Fitzgerald – She’s the first musician in her family. After high school, she headed to Berklee, made a few west coast connections, and moved to LA. She signed a record deal. The executives there were more obsessed with her looks than her talent. It was demoralizing–she wound up moving back to Rhode Island. Her hair, makeup, clothing style, really makes her seem older than 24. She’s got a super jazzy, but old-fashioned style. She’s not marketable in a pop. But, I could imagine her playing clubs in New York City. Seems like a better spot for her than LA.  Adam, Jennifer and Blake turn for her. Adam notes she’s got her own lane. Jennifer compares her to Barbra Streisand. Blake calls her “sis.” He says “I wanted a martini.” Emily picks Team Adam Levine. And…he finally has a female on his team. –  Download from iTunes
