It’s not unusual for a group of singing contestants to have hit their peak earlier in the season. Often, by the time the finale rolls around EVERYBODY is exhausted. Any surprises kept in a contestant’s back pocket for just the perfect time has already been revealed. So it was was for the remaining four The Voice season 13 finalists Monday night.
Front runner Chloe Kohanski had some obvious vocal issues. What could have been a show stopping pimp spot performance was merely another trip to the 80’s nostalgia well. Both Brooke Simpson and Red Marlow returned to reliably crowd-pleasing Christian themes last. Young Addison Agen seemed overwhelmed at times, as any 16 year old might be in such a pressure filled situation.
Each of the four singers had their big moments earlier in the season. Only dark horse Brooke Simpson had a little bit more to show us last night. Out of the four original songs performed, her ode to female self love and self confidence, “What is Beautiful” was the most culturally and personally relevant of the night.
Any real finale surprises could come when the results are revealed Tuesday night. I still believe Chloe Kohanski will win the title. But I wouldn’t be entirely surprised by an upset. Red Marlow, who had to sing for his spot in the finally, briefly sat in the No. 1 spot on iTunes with his self-penned tune, “I Pray.” And peaking later in the season as Brooke has could lead to the Carolina native taking it all. That would be something.
