The Voice Season 25: Fun Pop Singer Maddi Jane Shows a New Side to Herself with Rihanna’s “Stay”

The Voice Season 25’s Playoffs wrapped up on Monday night with performances from Teams Reba McEntire and Chance the Rapper. One of the standout performances came from a singer who proved to her doubters that she is a very good vocalist, and that was 25-year-old, former YouTube star Maddi Jane. (Read our Recap)

Maddi is thrilled to see Meghan Trainor who she admires for being a “skilled writer” and “a female producer.” She is singing “Stay” by Rihanna as she relates to Rihanna’s alto range and “fire.” Maddi explained that she was a theater girl, and that she related to the lyric, “I put my hands in the air and say show me something” a little bit different as she relates it to her music career in which she continues to push and put herself out there.

Meghan is wowed saying, “Chance is right. She has no fear in her body.” She continued by calling Maddi a “powerhouse.” Chance said that he keeps telling artists “don’t just show off different vocal inflections and things you can do with your voice, give us the lyrics.” He thinks she could win the show if she leans into her “controlled vibrato” and the emotion.

Maddi has been a bit more about showmanship and entertainment in previous performances by rapping and singing upbeat pop numbers. This time she is simply stood on stage and delivered the vocals. She did bring some dramatics and theater with her voice. Her vibrato stood out as being unique. She hit some big rangy notes that she didn’t previously seem capable of. She topped it all off with beautiful falsetto notes. It was a true breakout moment showing that she could be a potential frontrunner for Chance with smart song choices.

Maddi Jane moves on to the Top 12 and the Live shows

Reba called her “priceless” and “cute as a button” when describing how impressed she was with her. She added, “if you don’t make it something’s wrong.” Shay Mooney from Dan + Shay said, “I feel like there are a lot of hidden gems in this show, and you are not one of them because you are just a straight diamond.” He also claimed he’d quit if she didn’t go through to the lives. John Legend called her performance a “masterclass” before saying it was her best performance to date. Chance liked her “cool confidence” and is very proud of her.

Chance chose Maddi to move on to the Top 12 and the Live shows, along with fellow team members Nadege and Serenity Arce. I mostly agreed with his decisions, but his steal Kyle Schluesler’s “Something In The Orange” would have been a deserving pick too and I preferred it to Serenity’s performance.

The other team who performed on Monday night was Team Reba. Reba chose Asher Havon, Josh Sanders, and L. Rodgers to advance. She has a diverse team, and Asher’s performance of “Titanium” and L.’s performance of “All I Know So Far” were the next strongest performances to Maddi’s “Stay.” Last week, Team Legend and Team Dan + Shay chose their top three artists to advance to the live shows.
