The Voice: Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson Spar Over Teen Singer

The Voice 23 Mary Kate Connor

It’s another dogfight between Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton after the two The Voice veterans hit their button for 17 year old country singer Mary Kate Connor.

Mary Kate from Ashburton, Virginia, who performs Grace Potter & The Nocturnals’ “Stars,” will appear on Tuesday’s (March 14) The Voice season 23 Blind Auditions 4 episode.

Niall Horan said after Mary Kate’s delicate performance, “It was incredible to hear so much power and so much control. You’re going to be around here for a long time.”

Kelly begins her pitch: “Do you want a decisive coach that knows what they’re going to say?” Kelly jokes after Blake suggested she go first. “I loved how beautiful and tender it was. Usually people slide into it to make it easier so they don’t sound pitchy. You just nailed it, dead on.” Kelly went on to liken a delighted Mary Kate to a “younger Brandi Carlile.”

“I ran into Kelly Clarkson at a Brandi Carlile concert 10 or 12 years ago,” Blake deadpanned. “Not because you were there!” Kelly snarked, which prompted her to jump out of her seat to deliver an apology hug to her frenemy.

Calling Mary Kate’s voice “soft and angelic,” Blake begins namechecking states. It’s not clear if he remembers where she said she was from. But his point is that she possesses a style rooted in Americana. “You can hear it in your approach because you do swing for the fence with that song.”

Niall takes over for Blake!

He asks Niall to do his Blake impersonation, which he obliges, “So this is my last season of The Voice and I would be honored if you were on my last ever Team Blake!”

Finally, Chance the Rapper speaks. “I didn’t turn….I figured you would fair very well with either Blake or Kelly. Awesome song choice. Strong voice.”

“But now comes the hard part,” Chance adds. “Who do you choose as your coach for The Voice?” Tune into NBC Tuesday night (March 14) at 9 pm ET/PT to find out!
