The Voice 29 Finale Recap Winner Revealed (VIDEO)
The Voice 29 Battle of Champions presents an all new format for the new season. Veteran coaches Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend are back to win it all.
The Top 4 contestants compete to sing The Voice season 29 Battle of Champions. The audience, which includes super fans and former contestants, will determine the winner.
The contestants will sing two songs–uptempo and ballad.
Alexia Jayy – Team Adam – Lady Marmalade by Labelle
Alexia becomes emotional talking about her amazing The Voice journey. The song choice isn’t as adventurous as it could have been. It would be fun to see Alexia break out of her R&B box. But, as she always does, Alexia NAILS the performance. Her sturdy, strong vocals are seemingly effortless. The rasp in her voice is fierce.
Kelly says, “You make it special.” John sees a star. Adam is in awe of how Alexia can tackle all the big diva singers.
Mikenley Brown – Team Kelly – Almost is Never Enough by Ariana Grande
Mikenley is dedicating the song to her grandmother, who is going through cancer treatment. Mikenley is an interesting singer, but she outlasted better singers. Kelly really took to her. It’s like she sees a vocalist she can nurture. Having said that, the song choice suits Mikenley’s unusual tone and phrasing.
John feels Mikenley’s confidence growing. Adam loves her voice and tone. Kelly calls what Mikenley does special.
It’s really fun to see The Voice alumni in the audience. In between performances Carson interviews them, asking for their thoughts. Some of them I have not thought about in years!
Lucas West – Team Legend – Cold as Ice by Foreigner
This song was JUST performed on American Idol earlier this week. Lucas will sing without his keyboard, which doesn’t seem like a good idea? Would Billy Joel perform away from his piano? It’s The Voice I suppose. He wants to REALLY prove he can sing, which he can. Still, not one of my favorite performances. His stage persona without the keys is kinda corny.
Adam is glad he didn’t play keys. And John agrees. Apparently, he gets up once in a while. John appreciates that he did something different than the usual.
Liv Ciara – Team Kelly – The Greatest by Billie Eilish
Liv did not get a chair turn is season 28…which was taped at around the same time as season 29. Hm. Did you know that Liv is only 16? It’s a good song choice for Liv who has displayed radio ready vocals all season. Her tone is gorgeous. Great emotional delivery.
John notes the raw and honest way she delivered the song. Kelly is so emotional she needs a minute to compose herself.
Mikenley Brown – Team Kelly – Man I Need by Olivia Dean
Mikenley has battled depression and anxiety. Life is good now, though. Indeed, Mikenley chose an upbeat happy love song. It’s a hard song, talky boasting tricky rhythms. She seems more relaxed than she has all season.
John thinks she sounds cool singing anything. Adam loves her super specific style. “Amazing job.” Kelly calls her “rad.” She feels like the singer is doing a great job displaying who she is as an artist.
Lucas West – Team Legend – Ordinary People by John Legend
Well it makes sense that pianist Lucas wants to cover his piano playing mentor. John admits he’s hard on artists who cover his songs. He mentors him carefully, but is happy Lucas chose the song. Yeah…his Foreigner cover earlier in the night wasn’t a favorite. But now, back behind the keys, performing without a band, Lucas is comfortable and making the song his own.
Adam loves that Lucas performed the song without a band. Kelly is impressed with his ability to sing different types of genres. John admits that he felt something during Lucas’ performance of his song.
Liv Ciara – Team Kelly – What a Girl Wants by Christina Aguilera
Kelly helps Liv re-arrange the song so Liv can fully make it her own. “Change it up!” Kelly says. Liv has her own ideas as well. Liv is having a good night. When the song kicks up at the end, Liv works the stage like a pro. Then she hits an impossibly high note. Could she win it all? Maybe!
John is excited for where Liv will take her career. “You’re ready to be a pop star,” says Kelly.
Alexia Jayy – Team Adam – One and Only by Adele
Adam calls Alexia a beast who is humble at the same time. The singer closes out the competition performance portion of the show with a huge ballad. Alexia should probably win it all. It would give Adam a win he hasn’t had since his early days as a coach. Her raspy, growly delivery is sensational.
Kelly is crying again. “That was so good,” she gushes. “I’m a mess.” She begs Alexia to never cover her songs. Ha. John calls the singer a blessing. Adam thanks her for being a special messenger.
Next, the singers will perform with their coaches. It makes sense to conduct the vote BEFORE the Top 4 take the stage for non-competition songs (usually these duets are performed during the finale/results shows).
Liv Ciara and Kelly Clarkson – Stay by Rihanna
Nice pairing! Kelly and Liv’s voices match beautifully.
Next, basketball player Jimmy Butler does a bit with the coaches about country music. Ho hm.
Alexia Jayy and Adam Levine – Sunday Morning by Maroon 5
I wondered how these two very different singers would duet. It makes sense for Alexia to cross all the way over to Adam’s side to sing one of his hits. He can stay in his comfort zone while Alexia adds her special sauce to the proceedings.
Lucas West and John Legend – Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me by Elton John
Makes sense for the two piano players to cover that other pop piano player. Elton John. The two are majestic playing dual pianos on this classic. Beautiful. Dramatic!
Mikenley Brown and Kelly Clarkson – What Was I Made For by Billie Eilish
Kelly does a great job of matching the tone and style of her duet partners. She’s generous. And also the queen of traversing genres. Very pretty.
