The Voice season 20 Top 5 performed LIVE tonight for your vote and the crown. The winner of the season will be revealed on Tuesday’s (May 25) Grand Finale. (Check out our Recap).
After tonight’s show I may have changed my prediction. I felt sure that Team Kelly’s Kenzie Wheeler would win the competition, but now I’m not so sure. On the last night of performances, Kenzie revealed himself to be a one trick pony, and utterly predictable. I could be underestimating how much The Voice fans crave that sort of predictably. Kenzie most definitely does a thing–old school country music–and he does it very very well.
But on a night when finalists were willing to stretch themselves, and take some chances, does that reflect well on Kenzie? The country singer’s biggest competition is Team Blake Shelton’s Cam Anthony, who went right ahead and covered Bon Jovi, and proceeded to freaking nail the performance. He’s basically proved he can sing anything, at anytime and anywhere.
Even Jordan Matthew Young who has hewed close to southern rock, covered a dang Rihanna song tonight. Victor Solomon closed the show as a triple threat–covering Beyonce like a dancing, singing rapping maniac. And I mean that in the best possible sense.
Overall, it was a solid night of music. Everybody other than Kenzie went that extra mile. Team Nick Jonas’s 16 year old singer, Rachel Mac, had her best night since her Battle and Knockout round triumphs. So tomorrow, when I post my prediction, I may be shifting things around a little
Sidenote: So, The Voice and NBC were willing to pay for a stage full of dancers and sets, but not original songs. And I find it extremely surprising that the show didn’t bring back live audiences for the live shows. I’d rather have people in the house than fancy sets. Virtual reality and CGI are pretty good these days. But maybe that’s just me.
