The Voice is back into the swing of things. I barely think about the pandemic while watching, except when it’s brought up. Having family and friends on Zoom doesn’t seem like an odd thing. Well, maybe that wall of fans is a little weird. But I’ll take it! Like I’ve already said, live performances in front of the coaches is the important thing. Which brings me to the band. Are they playing live? Or, due to safety concerns, are the backgrounds taped ahead?
Tonight’s standouts: Madeline Consoer–loved her unexpected take on Maren Morris’ “Girl.” Cami Clune and her sublime tone on “Skinny Love,” and Sid Kingsley’s bluesy “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.” Last night’s talent was a bit better. But I think The Voice is off to a solid start.
With music venues shuttered, I wonder if the talent pool for singing shows is deeper due to the pandemic. Spending 3-4 months working on a TV show would be a pretty sweet alternative to being completely unemployed.
NOTE: Next week, The Voice moves to its regular Tuesday time slot 9-10 pm ET/PT. And on November 3, the Tuesday edition will be preempted to make way for the US Presidential Election returns.
