The Voice 17 Knockouts end tonight (Nov 5) with Taylor Swift as Mega Mentor. There are only four more Knockout performances to go and 5 spots up for grabs. In this clip, Americana singer Marybeth Byrd faces off against standards crooner Preston C. Howell for a spot on Team John Legend.
Although Marybeth has covered mostly country and blues artists so far, she stated during her blind audition that she LOVES Adele. So, it’s no surprise that she covered the singer’s “All I Ask.” Fifteen year old Preston performs the standard “The Way You Look Tonight.” Catch him wink at Gwen!
The Voice 17: Bye Bye Top 24 Playoffs, a Wildcard, No Tuesday Lives?
After the performance, Gwen Stefani calls Preston a “phenomenon.” She can’t believe he’s only 15. After complimenting Marybeth on her wardrobe, Gwen says, “I heard things in your voice that I didn’t recognize. I think your style is coming out a little bit.” Kelly Clarkson notes the Adele song is really hard to sing. “I’ve never heard that kind of power from you,” Kelly says to Marybeth. “You’re sneaky and I like it!” She’d love to hear Preston turn a Justin Bieber song into his style. “I think it would be cool if you did something unexpected.”
However, Blake Shelton disagrees. He feels that Preston has already proven flip a song by covering “Mamas & Papas” (Hm. That was “Dream a Little Dream of Me. A STANDARD. And a solo song by Cass Elliot, but I DIGRESS). He felt it took a lot of nerve for Maybeth to do an Adele song. “I like it when somebody swings for the fence,” he says.
John can’t decide! But I predict he’ll pick Preston and Blake will steal Marybeth. Remember that Kelly BLOCKED Blake from turning for the singer in the Blinds. Her “Angel from Montgomery” got four turns!
