The Voice 17 Katie Kadan Moves Blake Shelton to Block (VIDEO)

Here is your first look Blind Audition from The Voice season 17. This clip appears to be the first 7 minutes of the premiere, as the coaches enter the stage for the first contestant of the season, blues belter Katie Kadan.

As she growls her way through Aretha Franklin’s “Baby I Love You” the coaches, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Gwen Stefani get excited.

John is the first coach to turn. Blake is the next to hit his button. But not any old button. Nope. He turns and BLOCKS Kelly at the same time. Uh oh. This artist is right up Kelly’s ally. She could be a labelmate at Atlantic records! Of course, Blake knows this, which is undoubtedly why he used his block. Finally, Gwen turns too, giving Katie a four chair turn. Whoo hoo.

It takes Kelly a hot minute to figure out that she has been blocked, but when she does, it’s pretty hilarious. After she enthusiastically throws her jacket at Katie she looks down at the floor, spots the big red BLOCKED and screams. Cut to the family. They don’t seem too happy about that! After, Katie and Kelly hug. Sniff. Maybe Kelly can nab her with a steal.

Katie, a Chicago native and professional musician, has only been singing for about 8 years. A big gal, she was afraid to perform because of her size. “I was a chubby chick living in a skinny girls’ world,” she confesses. “I didn’t feel too good about it, but now I’m OK,” she declares.

Kelly, after comparing Katie to Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, turns to Blake and warns, “I’m going to take you down Shelton!” The whole time, of course, Blake blames the block on John, which nobody buys for a minute. Will the block pay off for Blake? Or will Katie choose John or Gwen? Find out when The Voice premieres on Monday September 23 at 8 pm ET/PT on NBC.
