The Voice 11 Billy Gilman Audition – When We Were Young – Video

The last time we wrote about country singer, Billy Gilman, he had come out as a gay man.

Billy, who  had a big hit “One Voice” in 2000 at the age of 12, decided to tell his story in a personal YouTube video, where he described the challenges he encountered as a closeted gay man in the country music business.

“Being a gay male country artist is not the best thing,” he said. “It’s difficult for me to make this video, not because I’m ashamed of being a gay male artist, or a gay artist or a gay person but … knowing that I’m in a genre and an industry that’s ashamed of me for being me.”

That was nearly two years ago. Now, Billy has auditioned for The Voice season 11. Watch him sing a cover of Adele’s “When We Were Young” for the coaches, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys.

It takes a minute for the coaches to turn. Adam is first. Miley follows after the singer hits a high note. On the VERY last note, Alicia and Blake push their buttons. Billy finishes in tears. Blake knew Billy. Miley didn’t remember initially. But then she realized he opened for her father Billy Ray on tour, and remembered his music video.

Who will Billy choose? Find out tonight when The Voice 11 premiere part 2 airs on NBC. We’ll be live blogging beginning at 8 pm ET.
