The Voice 10 Recap Knockouts Part 2 Live Blog

The Voice Knockouts continue tonight in a one hour telecast.  Miley Cyrus once again joins coaches Blake Shelton, Pharrell Williams and Christina Aguilera to prepare 3 more sets of singers to face off in a battle-like round. Pairs from the same team will face off against each other with solo performances of their own choosing. The coaches pick the singer who will advance to the Top 20 Live Playoffs, but each coach can steal ONE eliminated singer. For winning singer’s song choices, click for ALL of tonight’s Song Spoilers. Beware, ONLY songs by Knockout winners and stolen contestants are uploaded to iTunes. Spoilery!Don’t expect any steals tonight. All three knockouts will eliminate a singer. Next week, Miley,  Adam Levine and the rest of the coaches will round out their teams for the Live Playoffs that begin Monday April 11.  Click for the FULL Season 10 schedule.

The show kicks off with the usual recap of last night and Miley Cyrus blah blah blah she’s awesome whatervers. Blake Shelton is the ONLY coach left with a steal.

Adam Wakefield vs Peyton Parker – Team Blake Shelton

Adam Wakefield –  Bring it On Home to Me by Sam Cooke –  Mentoring session: Adam says he grew up singing a lot of R&B, so he’s taking on Sam Cooke. Blake notes how lost he is without his instrument. Let your personality shine through, says Miley. Adam feels The Voice may be his last chance to break through at his age. Performance: Xtina admits she has a secret crush on Adam. “He has a sexy voice!”  If you think strong, soulful voices with a tinge of rock and country, are sexy, then YEP. Young Peyton is going to have a tough time competing with the assured Adam. He hits a huge growly note on the second verse that surely won him this bout. – Download from iTunes

Peyton Parker – Travelling Soldier by Dixie Chicks – Mentoring session: Blake says it’s a tough one. She knows the subject matter is heavy, but assures Blake she connects to it. He had his doubts, but was sucked in by her ability to tell a story. Miley advises her to find some high harmonies. Performance: Adam is impressed with her tone. It is nice. But she’s too young to really connect to this deeply emotional song in a meaningful way. There are also some noticeably pitchy spots. This isn’t even a contest.

Results: Christina heard some nerves, but thinks Peyton’s got a perfect voice for country.  Of course, Xtina loves Adam’s “sexy” voice. Pharrell thinks Peyton’s tone could work in pop. But as far as country singing, Pharrell is on the Adam train, calling him “amazing.” Adam the coach defends Peyton’s pitchy moments, insisting her “crack” came from a flood of emotions. Adam is a huge fan of Adam the contestant. Blake thought Peyton did a wonderful job and that country singers make careers out of that emotional vocal break.  I thought Peyton was just plain pitchy, to be honest. Blake Chooses Adam. Peyton is eliminated.

Moushumi vs Nick Hagelin – Team Pharrell Williams

Moushumi – New Americana by Halsey – Mentor session: Why are they re-airing Pharrell’s borderline racist remark “I don’t think I’ve ever heard an Indian girl who sings like you?” Does he expect her to come out on stage wearing a bindi and playing a sitar?  Moushumi says she strives to bridge the gap between alternative and pop. They advise her to project more. The singer’s Old World parents aren’t exactly supportive, and would prefer she pursue a professional career. Miley knows all about unapproving parents and gives her advice on how to stick to your guns and sing the song as a strong declaration. Performance: Moushumi has a nice tone and vibrato. Her pitch is really on point. But she could have brought more energy and dynamics, especially on the choruses. It felt like she was holding back. – Download from iTunes

Nick Hagelin – Lost Without You by Robin Thicke – Mentor session: Miley knows Robin’s voice well, she says. Ha. Nick decides to play the guitar for the first time. Overall Pharrell and Miley are pleased with his pretty falsetto. Nick admits to some nerves in rehearsal vs performing in front of crowds. Miley gets that. Performance: Nick doesn’t change the song up much, but he does demonstrate he can do sexy and soulful, even if it is a tad on the corny side.

Results: Adam wanted to see another gear from Nick, and was missing a smoothness in his falsetto. but thought it was beautiful. Blake hoped Moushumi would have busted out a big note. He chooses Nick. Xtina wanted more flow and smoothness from Nick. But felt he interacted well with the audience. She thinks it’s funny Adam wanted him to dance more (yeah…he said that). Pharrell agrees with the coaches, Moushumi needed to bring a little more liked they talked about in rehearsal. Nick wasn’t as strong in the beginning, but he felt the song got better as it went along. Pharrell chooses Moushumi. He calls her a “rare package.” Nick is eliminated. Xtina disagrees with Nick’s elimination. Pharrell insists he was better in rehearsal. I don’t think either would make it past the live finals.

Maya Smith vs Tamar Davis – Team Christina Aguilera

Maya Smith – No One by Alicia Keys – Mentor session: Maya calls her song pick both fun AND emotional. Hm. Christina advises her to play with the melody. Miley says work the stage as well as her confidence. She wants to know what’s up with the post office and marvels how there can be talent in unexpected places. You might want to step out of your celebrity bubble once in awhile, Miley. You might be surprised. Performance:  Maya warbles the melody, not always on pitch, and her note choices and phrasing are a bit perplexing. Her timing isn’t good. When she reaches for the high notes she’s REALLY FLAT. She’s a postal worker, who barely has any experience. Tamar, who has worked with Beyonce, Prince, and Tyler Perry is poised to blow her out of the boxing ring, sadly.

Tamar Davis – Lay Me Down by Sam Smith – Mentor session: Miley and Christina felt so connected to her performance, they have very little advice to give her in rehearsal. They give her a couple of technical tips. And that’s it. Performance: Yep. Tamar is a pro. She takes the stage and and pretty much owns it. She wails on the second chorus and hits a big ole high note for extra measure. But her runs are doled out in specific measure. She is an expert in crafting a musical experience with her strong soulful voice.  Poor Maya is like a lamb to slaughter. Back to delivering mail for you Maya. – Download from iTunes

Results: Pharrell thought Maya performed the best ever. Pharrell felt Tamar made the song her own. Adam didn’t know Maya had that range. But Tamar, he calls BONKERS.  Blake calls Tamar timeless and ready for the Playoffs. Maya rose to the occasion, he says. Christina felt Tamar “murdered” that song, while Maya was at her personal best. Basically the coaches all gave Maya a gold star for effort. Of course Christina chooses Tamar. Maya is eliminated.
