It was inevitable that FOX would tap a beloved contestant from American Idol, the network’s highest rated show of the aughts to compete on the network’s most popular competitive reality show of the 10s, The Masked Singer.
Indeed, for fans of American Idol, it only took a minute to recognize season 5 rocker Chris Daughtry as the singer behind the Rottweiler mask on television’s wackiest singing show. On Tuesday (Dec 10) Chris/Rottweiler once again escaped elimination and is heading to Wednesday’s (Dec 11) Top 5 semi-final. If he eludes double elimination, he heads to the finale. At that point, he will have gone farther than he did as a 4th place finisher on American Idol in 2006.
It’s not as if the studio audience and judges could possibly eliminate Chris/Rottweiler after he closed the show with a stunning cover of “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi. It was clearly the performance of the night and one of the best of the entire season. Chris had audience members in tears.
Afterward, the judges panel, Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger were blown away. Season 1 winner, T-Pain, aka The Monster, served as guest judge and was impressed as well.
Watch Chris’s stripped down, emotional performance below.
A video package featuring clues to the contestant’s identity precedes each performance. In tonight’s clues package, Rottweiler meditates, while a guitar sits nearby. There is a cluster of blue roses. (Chris practices martial arts, plays guitar and sports a tattoo of blue roses). Two men flank Rottweiler wearing babies on their chests. (Chris and his wife had twins several years ago) A clock stops at 12/26. (That’s Chris’ birthday!)
For even MORE hints to Rottweiler’s identity, check out the post below, which lists decoded clues for each of the Top 6 contestants, including Chris.
