Survivor Season 50 Premiere Recap

The episode begins with a look back on the very first season of Survivor, as well as the cultural impact the show has had on television. We also see a montage of memorable Survivor moments from the past 25 years. Among these are Johnny Fairplay’s lie about his dead grandmother, Erik giving away his immunity necklace before getting voted out, Boston Rob proposing to Amber, hidden immunity idol plays, and various medical evacuations.

We next see the cast of Survivor 50 boarding a plane before the game begins. It cuts to them on a boat for the marooning. Among the cast are memorable players like Cirie, Colby, Stephenie, Coach, and Ozzy, as well as recent winners Savannah, Kyle, and Dee.

Jeff welcomes them all. He says they represent 25 years and 49 seasons of Survivor. Jeff says there are big expectations for the milestone 50th season. He wants them to give it everything. He also shares that the fans voted for production elements of the game this time around.

Jeff catches up with some of the castaways. He points out how Jenna played in the very first season, as well as the first All-Stars season. She says she learned a lot about herself playing Survivor, and she didn’t want to say no. Jeff next asks why Mike White wants to come back, even though he doesn’t need the money. He’s rich and successful from writing and directing The White Lotus. He says he has FOMO. He didn’t want to miss out on the experience.

Jeff says Cirie is synonymous with Survivor. Cirie says Survivor is like home for her. She gets emotional as she shares that Survivor gave her the courage she couldn’t find by herself on the couch. She says Survivor always gives her more each time she plays.

Jeff says Colby was so popular back when The Australian Outback aired that people named their kids after him. Colby is in his 50s now, and he says it’s giving him a time to reflect and recognize the gravity of it. He is honored to be back for the 50th season. Jeff next asks to hear from Coach. Coach says he knows everyone would regret it if they said no. He says they’re all here to slay some dragons.

Next is the tribe division. They each grab a wrapped package as they will be divided randomly. The Purple tribe is Vatu, The Green tribe is Kalo, and the Orange tribe is Cila. Jeff also reveals the fans voted for the castaways to earn their rice and tribe supplies.

Vatu tribe – Aubry, Q, Colby, Kyle, Angelina, Stephenie, Genevieve, and Rizo
Kalo tribe – Charlie, Tiffany, Chrissy, Kamilla, Dee, Coach, Mike, and Jonathan
Cila – Rick, Cirie, Emily, Christian, Joe, Jenna, Savannah, and Ozzy

The challenge begins. They must retrieve paddles and then have two tribe members paddle out into the ocean and retrieve a torch. The first tribe to come back and light their torch will win flint and a bonfire back at camp. Stephenie gets the early lead for Vatu, and they remain in the lead for the whole challenge. Vatu wins the challenge!

Jeff teases another challenge to win camp supplies. Each tribe must elect one person to represent their tribe for the challenge. Coach, Ozzy, and Q step forward. While they depart for the challenge, everyone else makes their way to camp.

We first see the Vatu tribe. Angelina is a mom now. She thinks she’ll show a different side to herself. Stephenie says it’s comforting seeing Colby again. They were allies back in Heroes vs. Villains. Colby and Stephenie plan to work together again. Colby tells Stephenie he likes Genevieve and Kyle. He finds Rizo annoying though. He thinks he’ll be a liability.

On the Kalo tribe, Dee says it feels good to be back. She says she has the reputation of being the most dominant winner of the new era of Survivor. She plans to be cutthroat again. Meanwhile, Mike wants to lie low. He wants to have fun and vote out people that gets on his nerves.

Joe likes the people on his Cila tribe. Cirie is on her fifth season, and Jenna was on the very first season. Savannah is a mystery though. Survivor 50 was filmed two weeks after Survivor 49 wrapped up. Savannah is honest with her tribe members and tells everyone she won her season. Later, Jenna pulls Savannah aside and tells her she is concerned about Cirie. Jenna wants Cirie out of the game as soon as possible. She is already scrambling to get the numbers to vote Cirie out first.

Back at the challenge, Ozzy admits to Coach that he should’ve won Survivor: South Pacific. Coach owns up to why he lost that season. The two of them haven’t spoken about the game in years, but they want to squash the beef between them. They next read about the challenge. They must retrieve bundles of sticks from a tower, buried in the sand, and attached to a buoy in the water. They must then use the sticks to retrieve a key while behind a wooden wall with their sticks tied together. The challenge begins, and Ozzy takes a commanding lead. However, Coach and Q do have the opportunity to steal the key. There is only one key. Even if Ozzy knocks down the key, Coach or Q could drag it to themselves instead. After over thirty minutes, Ozzy finally knocks down the key. Ozzy asks for the key, but Coach steals it for himself. Ozzy says in his confessional that Coach will be cutthroat and do anything to win. After Coach leaves, Ozzy and Q learn there is a twist. Their punishment for losing is they will be stranded on Exile Island. They will remain there and won’t return to their tribes until tomorrow.

Coach returns to the Kalo tribe with the camp supplies. They’re all happy he was successful with the challenge. As the tribe is getting settled in, Chrissy is ready to talk strategy. She talks to Coach, and she lets him know she wants them to work together. She also wants to vote out Dee since she already won the game.

Christian and Rick talk about Jenna planning a move against Cirie. Rick searches for hidden immunity idols while talking. The two of them agree to be allies too. Christian says they will be like Captain Kirk and Spock. Rick later pulls in Emily to their alliance. She was worried she’d be on the outs, but she’s relieved that people do want to work with her.

On the Vatu tribe, Colby and Kyle agree to align. They want Stephenie and Genevieve in their alliance too. Genevieve is glad to have a group. The first time she played, she didn’t form close bonds with people. Genevieve 2.0 is making an effort to form bonds. Later, Aubry approaches Genevieve. She wants to know her thoughts. Genevieve says Aubry is a dangerous player, but she would rather have her on her side. In her confessional, Aubry says there is a weird vibe between them. Aubry believes she will need to vote out Genevieve before Genevieve targets her.

Back at Exile Island, Q and Ozzy are having a hard time. It’s windy and there are bugs crawling all over them. Boats eventually come to take them back to their original tribes. Before they depart, they learn there’s a twist. In order to bring back a pot and a machete back to camp, one of them must give up his vote. The other will earn an extra vote, but he’ll return to camp with no supplies. After some discussion, Q agrees to give up his vote. Ozzy gets an extra vote advantage.

Q returns and he tells them about the challenge and Exile Island. He hides the fact he lost his vote. Later, Kyle and Q talk and say they want to work together. Q tells Kyle that he lost his vote. Kyle says this proves Q wants to work with him. Kyle wants Q to join his alliance with Genevieve, Stephenie, and Colby.

Ozzy returns to Cila empty-handed. Nonetheless, Christian manages to get a fire going with glasses. He’s proud of himself. Christian also has a newborn son, and he hasn’t told anyone about him. Christian wants to set a good example for his son. Meanwhile, Rick gives Cirie a heads up that Jenna is targeting her. Cirie wants to make sure she has numbers, and she talks to Ozzy. Ozzy agrees to work with Cirie. He also shares with her that he has an extra vote advantage.

Back at Vatu, Colby says he’s changed his mind about Rizo. He says he misjudged him, and he wants to take Rizo under his wing. The two later have a heart-to-heart conversation. Rizo is starstruck by the people around him, but he’s confident in his own skills as a player too.

At the Kalo tribe, Jonathan and Mike talk game. Jonathan wants to target Dee first since she’s a big threat. Jonathan has a reputation as a strong physical player, but he wants to have a better strategic game this time. Meanwhile, Tiffany wants to form an alliance with Dee and Kamilla. Tiffany shares with Kamilla that she wants to target Chrissy first. Kamilla says she’s good with any plan as long as she’s not on the chopping block.

It’s time for the immunity challenge. They must go through a series of obstacles until they reach a platform to solve a puzzle. The first two tribes to finish will win immunity. The winning tribes will also win fishing gear. The challenge begins, and Vatu gets an early lead. Kalo ends up taking the lead away and reach the platform with the puzzle first. Cila falls behind trying to get the ramp down. While trying to jump up the platform, Kyle falls back on the ground on his feet hard and hurts his ankle. He can’t stand properly, and Jeff stops the challenge. The medical team checks on Kyle. The medic says Kyle could’ve sprained his ankle, but it could also be something more serious. Kyle is determined to keep going, and his tribe helps him up the platform. Cirie is struggling with tossing the stringed ball to bring down the ramp. She finally gets the ramp down, but the other two tribes are already working on their puzzles. Kalo solves the puzzle first. Kalo wins immunity! Vatu solves the puzzle next. Vatu wins immunity! Cila will go to tribal council tonight.

The Cila tribe returns to camp. Cirie is worried she could be on the chopping block. She feels like she let her tribe down at the immunity challenge. In her confessional, Jenna says Cirie botched the challenge. Jenna tells Rick and Savannah that she wants to vote Cirie out of the game. Not only did she cost them the challenge, but she’s also a huge threat. Jenna also tells Ozzy to target Cirie, but he’s noncommittal. In his confessional, Ozzy admits he’s ride-or-die for Cirie. Later, Ozzy tells Joe, Emily, and Christian that Jenna could be more of a liability. Christian agrees. He says Jenna is playing too hard, too fast. Cirie is also more of an open book. In his confessional, Joe is taken aback at how hard Ozzy was pushing for Jenna to go home. Joe talks to Savannah next. They both agree that Cirie and Ozzy are more slick as a duo. Savannah prefers to vote out Cirie due to her performance at the challenge. Later, Joe warns Rick that Ozzy and Cirie could be a power duo. Rick and Emily have a similar discussion later too. Emily wonders if they should vote out Ozzy tonight. Emily wants to keep the dynamic of Jenna vs. Cirie as a distraction. Christian, Savannah, Rick, and Joe sit down to agree on a name. Christian thinks voting out Ozzy or Cirie would be a dirty move since it will make some people angry, but no one would be mad to see Jenna go home. Nonetheless, he just wants them all to be on the same page. Will they vote out Jenna, Cirie, or Ozzy tonight?

It’s time for tribal council. Jeff asks Jenna about her very first tribal council, which was over 25 years ago. She says tribal council was tiny compared to what it is today. She says they took it lightly back then, but it became serious after they had to send someone home. Jeff asks about baggage from previous seasons. Joe says he’s still recovering from being played by Kyle and Kamilla from his previous season. Joe says they can only give each other a fair shot. Christian says there’s too much history for anyone to have a clean slate. Ozzy says they have to examine the games they’ve played previously. Cirie says they have to be as transparent as possible. Cirie hopes people can see she’s being truthful. Rick says they can only study the game while waiting for the chance to return.

Jeff talks about the challenge next. Cirie agrees it wasn’t her best day at the challenge. Savannah says she can look past challenge performance if she trusts them in the game or not. Emily says tonight’s vote is not easy. They all have different merits. Christian says Survivor is about stories, and they need to ascend back into dominance. Afterwards, it is time to vote.

We see Jenna vote for Cirie and Cirie vote for Jenna. But who will be voted out tonight?

Jeff reads the votes. The first vote is for…

Cirie

Jenna

Jenna

Jenna

Jenna

Jenna

Jenna is the first person voted out of Survivor 50. She wishes them luck before getting her torch snuffed. In her farewell message, she admits that she did play aggressively, but she played her own game.

It’s the morning of Day 4 on Vatu. Kyle says he’s doing better with his leg wrapped up, despite walking gingerly around camp. Meanwhile, Genevieve and Stephenie go looking for a hidden immunity idol together. Genevieve finds the package in a log, but Rizo walks by before she can read it. Later, Genevieve reads it with Kyle. The note is from singer Billie Eilish. The advantage is called the Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol. Genevieve must send this idol to someone else on another tribe. If that person is voted out with the idol in his or her pocket, then the idol will go back to Genevieve. After discussing options with Stephenie, Genevieve chooses to send the idol to Ozzy. She predicts he’ll be blindsided with an idol in his pocket (since he already was back in Survivor: Micronesia), and then the idol will return to her.

Ozzy finds the hidden idol in his bag. A note says that he cannot give the idol to anyone else. He also doesn’t know who gifted him the idol. This hidden immunity idol is good until the Final 5. Later, a boat arrives at each camp to take someone on a Journey. Mike goes for Kalo, Savannah goes for Cila, and Colby goes for Vatu.

Mike, Colby, and Savannah talk about the challenge for the supplies among Coach, Ozzy, and Q before learning the details of the Journey. Only two of them can play. They draw rocks to decide. Mike draws the odd rock, so he has to go back to camp. Colby and Savannah will play a Survivor style of Jenga. The winner will keep his or her vote. The loser will lose his or her vote. The challenge begins. Colby and Savannah take turns placing a piece on the tower they are building. After a while, the pieces fall when Colby places a piece. Colby loses his vote. Savannah will keep her vote. After Colby departs, Savannah learns there was an advantage to win after all. She has won a secret Block-a-Vote advantage.

Mike returns to camp and let them know that Ozzy was talking negatively about Coach. This frustrates Coach. He doesn’t want the reputation of being someone who is dishonest. Coach says this is a reminder that this game is going to be a battle.

Colby returns to camp and tells them the truth. In his confessional, Q says their core alliance of 5 is struggling with both of them losing a vote. Savannah tells her tribe about the challenge too, but she doesn’t tell anyone she won an advantage. No one believes that Savannah didn’t win an advantage. In his confessional, Rick says that Savannah might be a big target in the tribe now.

Jeff and the medical team come to the Vatu camp to check on Kyle. There is concern about Kyle’s Achilles tendon. After running some tests, the doctor says there is severe damage. Kyle clearly doesn’t want to be pulled from the game, but Jeff says they have a duty for safety. Jeff and Kyle break the news to Kyle’s tribe members that he is being pulled from the game. They are all very disappointed to see him leave like this. He breaks down in tears saying how great it was to get to know them all and become friends. Kyle gives everyone a hug and asks for one of them to win before leaving.

And that wraps up the season premiere of Survivor 50. Thanks for reading, and come back next time for another recap.
