Songland Winner Angry NBC Ditched His Olympic Theme for Jonas Bros’

Originally, NBC planned to used Bebe Rexha’s song “Miracle” written by two Songland winners as the Tokyo Olympics 2020 theme. But in the year since the Olympics were rescheduled for 2021, the network decided to go with The Jonas Brothers’ “Remember This” instead. Sad for all parties involved with “Miracle.”

TMZ caught up with Greg Scott, one of the two songwriters Bebe Rexha chose as winners and he’s disappointed with NBC’s decision, to say the least. Worst of all, NBC never reached out to let him know that they chose a different song.

“It was crickets…nobody said anything”

“We didn’t even know it,” Greg said. “It was like crickets…nobody said anything.” Greg doesn’t have a beef with the Jonas Brothers personally. But he believes that his song is better. “It’s the theme! The Olympic committee was there, they approved the song. Bebe Rexha was singing it. She was loving it!” Greg added, “It was…crazy how it…totally went in the dark. Just crickets.”

In fact, Greg found out about NBC choosing the Jonas Brothers song as the Olympics theme on social media along with the rest of the world.

The Olympics song “was going to change our lives”

“It’s disappointing,” Greg admitted. “…something like that can change your life.”He noted that he’s an up-and-coming artist, while the Jonas Brothers are established and don’t really need the boost. “Give the people a chance,” said Greg. “It was going to change our lives.”

Songland aired on NBC as a summer show for two seasons. Last summer, by the time Songland premiered in the Spring, the world had shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, NBC finished filming Songland in February, before the shutdown began. And at that time, the Summer Olympics were still a thing.

In a Songland twist, Bebe chose TWO winners, mashing up two songs

It’s also worth noting that Bebe, in a first for the show, chose TWO songs, Greg’s “Miracle” and “Bones” by Anna Graceman. At the time Bebe said, “I absolutely loved the verse on Bones,” she explained, “But I just couldn’t give up the hook of Miracles.” So why not take them both!”  Anna is likely really disappointed too. But on her Instagram, she’s focused on promoting new music.

On June 1, Greg believed the song would be the Olympics’ official theme: “A year ago today @nbcsongland gave me the opportunity of a lifetime. My song “miracle” written with the great @markrudin went all the way for the win and still it’s to be the theme song of the freaking Summer @nbcolympics sung by @beberexha !” He namechecks Ryan Tedder who produced the song for the show.

The outcome is understandably disappointing. But it should not be surprising.

Check out the finished version of the song by Bebe Rexha. The episode aired on June 1, 2020. (Read the recap with videos HERE). The Olympics were set to kick off the following month. Songland promoted the Olympics and the Olympics would have promoted Songland. That’s how network TV synergy works!

But, Songland didn’t even air this summer, and might even be canceled. Meanwhile, Nick Jonas served as coach on The Voice this spring, and the Jonas Brothers filmed a fun Olympic kickoff show to air before the games begin on July 23. The outcome is understandably disappointing. But it should not be surprising.
