NBC did not upload photos ahead of this week’s Songland episode with guest artist Charlie Puth, so we have few spoilers.
However, a video preview is now available, featuring songwriter Sam DeRosa performing her original single “Pill for This.” She wrote “Broken” for lovelytheband and according to her official bio is currently working with Songland’s Shane McAnally.
But Shane isn’t her only connection to the show. Apparently she went to school with Charlie. The anecdote where she explains how they know each other isn’t included in the clip. But I’m assuming the school is Berklee College of Music, which they both attended. Charlie says “all we did was eat clam chowder together and write horrible English essays.” So there you go.
Ester Dean hears the song on the radio “right now.” The chorus will be stuck in Ryan Tedder’s head for the rest of the day, he claims. He would experiment with the lyrics a little. Unlike last week’s song for Leona Lewis, which he completely rewrote, Ryan assures Sam that she’s “90% there.” and promises “I’m not going to tear this song apart.” Shane wants to strip the song back. “You don’t need any tricks,” he insists.
Charlie and Sam sing a bit of the song together, along with Ryan’s piano accompaniment. The entire time, Sam is freaking out. She can’t believe that she’s presenting her song to a room full of hitmakers.
Sam grew up in New York, but currently lives in Los Angeles. Her new song “Baby I Know” is out now. Songland’s Charlie Puth episode airs Wednesday September 4 at 9 pm ET/PT on NBC.
