On Monday, Songland songwriters will pitch tunes to country superstar Martina McBride. In this new preview, Nashville songwriter Jeffrey James performs “We Can Be (Heroes)” for Martina and Songland producers Ester Dean, Shane McAnally and Ryan Tedder.
After performing the inspirational piano-driven ballad, Shane compliments his voice and Martina notes the pretty melody. The chord changes grab Ryan’s attention, as he repeats them on his keyboard. Ryan calls the chord changes “interesting” as he repeats them on his keyboard.

However, the panel thinks the lyrics need to be refined. Martina wonders if “Heros” is the right word. “It doesn’t grab your heart,” she says. Shane, the king of lyrics agrees. While he loves the melody and rhyme scheme, he doesn’t understand the hook.
That’s when the group gets to work helping Jeffrey craft a more meaningful and precise lyric. It’s why they all get paid the very big bucks!
