So You Think You Can Dance 10- Season Premiere!- Live Blog and Discussion Thread

Mac here. Filling in tonight with SYTYCD. Let’s do this. ROLL TIDE!

We start out with a bunch of past contenders talking about their experience auditioning for the show. Cyrus, Twitch, Dominic, Whitney. Then we see glimpses of this seasons crop. It looks incredible. I’m so excited. I love this show.

Auditions starting in Los Angeles. Our judges are Nigel, Mary, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

Du-Shant “Fik-Shunn” Stegall-Las Vegas- Street Performer (Popper)
He’s certainly entertaining, as most of these routines typically are. He’s doing some moves we’ve seen before, and honestly done better by Robert Muraine. Nevertheless, he gets a standing O, and a ticket to Vegas.

Malece Miller-Salt Lake City- Contemporary
Her mom cleans houses so she can dance. She makes a joke about being partially deaf, because she doesn’t understand Nigel. At least this girl isn’t afraid. I’m not a fan of the song, but I know they’ve changed the song we hear from the song they actually danced to before, so I won’t count against her. It was OK, she’s a good dancer, but she needs a better solo choreographer. I don’t think that showcased her talents. Mary thinks she’s cute and has a different look. Jesse enjoyed it, and loves her face. Nigel thinks she also has a good look. She goes straight to Vegas.

That girl breaking her leg? WOWWOWOWOWOWOW. Crazy.

We see a montage of dancers that they enjoyed and sent to Vegas. No names.

Paul Karmiryan- Los Angeles – Latin Ballroom
He won So You Think You Can Dance in Armenia. He’s trained in latin ballroom, but his routine features a lot of other styles. He’s got personality for days. I think he’ll do well in the competition. Charisma and showmanship. Mary compliments his movie-star looks. Jesse talks about how it would be funny if Melanie was auditioning for the Armenian SYTYCD right now. Nigel says it doesn’t matter because Paul’s going to Vegas!

Elijah Laurant- Contemporary
He’s wearing a tutu around his neck. He wants to make the stage his playground. What a bizarre song, matching his intense performance. There’s obviously a story going on in Elijah’s mind. He’s an interesting character. Nigel says it was androgynous, and Elijah gets excited because that’s what he was going for. Nigel enjoyed it. Mary says she’ll never forget it. Jesse thinks Elijah knows how to make people feel something with just a simple motion. Elijah goes straight to Vegas.

Another montage of dancers. These dancers make it to choreography. Even the crazy guy.

Taylor
Played softball and got a scholarship. She let go of her scholarships to pursue dance, and her grandfather supported her, and just recently died. She’s the girl who breaks her leg before her audition. We’re left until after the break to find out what happens.

Instead, when we get back, some more girls are montaged, and sent through to Vegas. Taylor didn’t break her leg, she just dislocated her knee. Apparently that happens all the time to her.

Taylor Ward- Claremont, CA- Contemporary
She’s a good dancer, trying to do what she can after her knee injury. This is kind of incredible that she’s doing this after that injury. I’d still be in the lobby screaming in pain. Jesse was nervous about her knee. He says she’s effortless in her dancing. Mary calls her a warrior, says she has stunning technique. Nigel wants to see her do hip hop and partnerwork, so she goes to choreography.

Morris Isby- B-Boy
Was ranked as the best B-boy in the world for 2010-2011. His routine is quick and entertaining, pulling out all the best stops. His crew is there to support him, and I definitely recognize some of those faces. Morris is through to choreography.

A montage of street dancers doing their thing.

Armen Way- Glendale, CA- Ballroom Dancer
He was a rapper for a while. He’s good looking, and a good ballroom dancer. I think there have been better ballroom dancers on the show before, but he’s got a great look, and he’s very masculine. He might do well if he grows on the show. Nigel starts to critique, but then Mary just gives him a ticket to Vegas. During the commercial break, I looked him up. He did a music video featuring Joey Fatone. He has also performed on Dancing With The Stars.

Eric and Lorenzo Chapman- Hip Hop
Three brothers who lost their father, who was a B-Boy. They started heading the wrong direction in life after that, so they started an afterschool dance club for kids, the 818ers. If we’re judging them based on their dancing, there are better daners, just in this episode. I mean, they’re better than me, but there are much better dancers than them. Jesse doesn’t think they’re ready for choreography. All the judges think they’re inspirational, and Nigel would love to help them spread their word through schools (which is probably why their audition was shown).

Choreo Round!

Marko and Sasha are teaching the choreo round!!!!

Morris does not make it to Vegas. He takes it well. Taylor does make it to Vegas. 10 more dancers make it out of choreography.

Tomorrow night is Detroit. Twitch is judging! I’ll be here to recap that for you too. Hope you enjoyed tonight’s liveblog. Sound off in the comments. Who was your favorite tonight?
