The Black Friday numbers are in. People are in the mood for Christmas and animated movies.
The Weeknd rose to fame when he landed a track on the “50 Shades of Grey” Soundtrack (“Earned It”). This week, he hit the stratosphere with the release of “Starboy” (led off by a single of the same name with which he contributed Daft Punk). He is dominating the sales chart doing even better on the combined charts. He has the only debut in the top 10 (Garth Brooks debuted last week and his collection of greatest hits do not count because the cost per CD is too low – he’s still making money on old songs so he’s not going to really care).
Pentatonix land two albums in the top 10. The Sing-Off Winners have their current Christmas album, “A Pentatonix Christmas” at 2nd and their previous Christmas album “That’s Christmas to Me” at 9th. That’s on both the sales and combined charts. Jordan Smith who won The Voice also has a Christmas album in the top 10 of sales (top 11 of combined” with “‘Tis the Season”. Not many Voice winners have a successful first album, but I believe he is the first two have two with the label that signed him post-show. He may be the greatest winner the show has ever had.
Also hitting the charts are Carrie Underwood at 36/39 with “Storyteller” and Lauren Daigle’s “Behold” at 49 in sales. Carrie also appears on Keith Urban’s album at 34/34. Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis (UK XF) and Susan Boyle all have tracks on the NOW Christmas album 16/26th. We don’t mention Nashville Star very often, but Miranda Lambert and Chris Young are two of its successes. Chris Young has a Christmas album out at 22/32 while Miranda’s “The Weight of These Wings” is at 7/7.
The rest of the top 10 are Garth, Trolls and Moana (3/4/5, 3/5/6), Bruno Mars at 6/5 and Metallica (last week’s number one) at 8/8.
Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello has a single with MGK at 39th on the streaming chart.
