RoughStock reports in on Country Digital Songs completing the story of the last Idol coronation song. Trent Harmon’s “Falling” had sales spread over two weeks this year because the chart week was re-defined later last year. Chart weeks used to end Sunday at midnight and now they end Thursday at midnight, shortly after Trent’s win.
Trent’s “Falling” sold 24K in the first two days (released on Wednesday morning prior to the finale) and 28K in its second week (including the day after the finale). Within a week of the finale, it was out of the Hot 100, so for comparison to other coronation songs, it sold 52K within its first week. The Season 14 Idol Winner Nick Fradiani sold 50K of “Beautiful Life” within its first week, Season 13 Idol Winner Caleb Johnson sold 10K of “As Long as You Love Me” and Season 12 Idol Winner Candace Glover sold 48K of “I am Beautiful”.
Contestants in the RoughStock report (Ordinals are from Country Digital):
4 Trent Harmon Falling 28,000 52,000
6 Chris Young/Cassadee Pope Think Of You 27,000 277,000
23 Carrie Underwood Something In The Water 12,000 1,085,000
27 Carrie Underwood Church Bells 11,000 38,000
With 88% of sales reported, HDD has Sturgill Simpson (Country) has the most sales, but they aren’t high, so a streamer like Rihanna may swoop back into first on the BB200. The top album will be around 45K in equivalent albums according to BB. Santana (Latin Rock) looks to notch their 14th top 10 album with their latest debut. Chris Stapleton has legs like a marathoner as he sits in the third spot. Last week’s number one, the Lumineers have slid to 4th while Adele’s 25 isn’t planning on leaving the top 10 any time soon.
Hamilton, the musical, is not only selling lots of tickets on Broadway, it’s having tremendous success as a cast album. It also got Andrew Jackson booted from the $20 bill. Advocates have been campaigning for a while to get a female featured on a bill and they had targeted the $10 bill which currently features Hamilton. The popularity of the musical changed those plans and it was announced earlier this week that Hamilton was staying and no female would be featured until sometime well into the future. That did not go over well, so Andrew Jackson who has a bit of bad reputation and no hit musical got the boot. The very amazing Harriet Tubman will take his place. You go girl!
Back to music, twenty one pilots and their “Blurry Face” are 7th, Now 57 is 8th and Rihanna is 9th.
The Voice’s Jordan Smith is leading the charge on album sales for reality competition stars at 10th, but Zayn from X-Factor will likely overtake him on the equivalent album fronts based on strong sales/streams of the single “Pillowtalk”. Zayn’s “Mind of Mine” is currently 16th. Idol’s Carrie Underwood’s “Storyteller” is at 20th, Voice’s Melanie Martinez is holding steady at 38th and Idol auditioner Lauren Daigle is 49th.

The sad news of Prince’s death yesterday reminded people to pick up his music in tribute. He has taken over the chart. HDD reports that Prince’s albums have possession of 19 of the top 28 spots on the iTunes album chart. Over on the singles chart, Prince has turned the chart purple. 21 of the top 25 singles are from Prince including the entire top 10. A more recent check of the chart shows 16 of the top singles belongs to Prince. He will be all over next week’s charts, but the following week will feel an even bigger impact. His compression of the chart is impressive and he probably sold enough in part of one day to get singles in the top 10 of the Hot 100. What will several days of sales do?
Prince will be missed.
