Rising Star Confirmed Cancelled: ABC Chief says No More Singing Shows

Here are a few pertinent tidbits that came out of the ABC executive session at today’s Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles.

ABC President, Paul Lee, confirms that the poorly rated singing competition, Rising Star, will not return to the network. “I don’t think were going to be trying [another singing show] for a little bit,” he said although there will be “some really cool [new] reality shows for the summer.” Let’s hope Bachelor Pad returns! Ha.

Remember that ABC has struck out twice in the singing show department. The summer singing show, Duets, featuring Kelly Clarkson as a mentor, fell flat in the summer of 2012. The finale of Rising Star only garnered 0.9/3 demo rating and 3.20 viewers. And those numbers had risen from the week before. Ouch.

Lee also gave Nashville a vote of support and teased “great announcements” to come regarding guest stars. With the soapy country music based musical drama finishing up it’s 3rd season, it’s a sure bet that the ABC owned series will come back for a 4th season, if only to shore up the number of episodes for syndication.

I expect Nashville reruns to wind up on CMT sometime in the not-so-distant future.
