Rebel Wilson to Mentor American Idol 2019 Top 10 Disney Night

Rebel Wilson to Mentor American Idol Disney Night

Once again, the American Idol Top 10 will sing songs from the Disney catalog when the show goes live coast to coast for the first time this season on Sunday April 21.

Disney night will feature a mentor–Rebel Wilson. Kind of weird to bring on a comic actor to mentor a singing show, right? But consider that Rebel has been part of the popular Pitch Perfect franchise, playing the part of Fat Amy.

Pitch Perfect is the story of a scrappy all-girls acapella team that stars Anna Kendrick. The original movie was released in 2012, Pitch Perfect 2 came out in 2015 and Pitch Perfect 3 hit theaters in 2017. Rebel will also star alongside American Idol alum Jennifer Hudson and pop star Taylor Swift in the movie adaption of the Broadway musical Cats. Yes, in case you were not aware, the actress ALSO sings. Rebel Wilson as an American Idol mentor is unexpected, but maybe on reflection, not that far fetched.

But before the American Idol Top 10 take the stage on April 21, The Top 14 will sing for a spot in the finals on Sunday April 14. Then, on Monday April 15 when the show goes LIVE for the first time, the Top 10 will be revealed.

American Idol 2019 Full Season 17 Schedule

April 22 is the last American Idol Monday episode, but it will not be shot in front of a studio audience. I smell a clip show! The week after, it’s the Queen + Adam Lambert docu-special, followed by a Bachelorette reunion special on May 6. The new season of the Bachelorette premieres Monday May 13.

American Idol 2019 concludes with a live coast to coast finale airing Sunday May 19.

American Idol tweeted the news: “Welcome @RebelWilson to #AmericanIdol! She’ll be our guest mentor for Disney Night!!”

  1. I don’t have a problem with Rebel being a mentor, she is very talented & can sing. But why for Disney night? Idina was the perfect choice last year!

  2. Alrighty then. Considering the synergy factor, looks like Disney Theme Week is a permanent fixture on the show…and it was a pretty successful one in terms of pleasing the Idol audience last year! So the cast don’t plan to be Disney singers, so what else is new with Idol theme weeks…and at least one can argue a familiarity with a lot of the material. ? I have no comment on Rebel Wilson as mentor…except, why not?

One caveat, though, since it looks like Disney plans to keep doing this…can Idol monitor for retreads? There are plenty of wholesome Disney tunes, let’s not have them doing the same picks over and over like some infamous Idol choices. It’s only the second serving…so *nip that ish in the bud* would be nice. (Like “Painting the Roses Red” nice. ?)

  3. Once again TPTB are trying to separate this Idol from the original by their choices for guest stars/mentors, etc. okay then but you can’t Have it both ways. Many viewers have been fans since the beginning. I’m still trying to figure out exactly what they are selling us?

  4. She’s done ‘The Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘The Little Mermaid’ at the Hollywood Bowl, so Rebel definitely has connection with Disney.

  5. Idina was the perfect choice last year but this is random .. I’d say good choice who would bring in viewers would be Lin Manuel Miranda for that for his Moana score and upcoming Little Mermaid stuff

  6. Idol asked on Twitter months ago on theme weeks . Lots of asks for Broadway week but I assume that’s too similar to Disney . Don’t think they have had that since Andrew Lloyd Webber week S7 and two of that Two of that Top6/7 made it to Broadway years later …

  7. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THIS SHOW. I can’t believe I kind of just want it cancelled. It’s so sad to see how it is now. ABC ruined it. Rebel Wilson, really? She’s NOT a singer. I don’t care if she sang in Pitch Perfect.

  8. Yeah, after all the crazy people they have had on Idol, Rebel Wilson at least has vocal and performance experience. Not like the Dawg being the official mentor for a cast of vocalists…that was REALLY Pathetic! And she knows how to sell it on stage as well. I will reserve judgement…they could have done worse…because they have! ?

  9. I’m not ready to bash someone until I see how they do. Rebel may work out to be a great mentor. . . who knows.

I’ve also watched Idol since the beginning. . .and I miss the longer version as well. It’s about the ratings. Ratings = money. And, it’s always about the money. If ratings were to tick up. . . we’d get longer seasons again. But, I think producers are doing the best they can with the time ABC has allotted them.

Personally, I get a little tired of the overdone sob backstories. I don’t want votes to be determined by backstories. I’d rather see more of the backstage/rehearsal mentoring within the limited time that ABC has allotted AI.

  10. There have been non American mentors in the past. And mentors who weren’t singers.

  11. DWTS has Disney night every season. No reason for Idol to be any different in that regard.

Every tv show is a delivery system for promoting the Disney ecosystem.

  12. Idol just isn’t in the position to attract the big names anymore. People here were complaining about Stevie Nicks, but the alums who got to work with her, will remember it for the rest of their lives. Same with those who got Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, etc. But those high profile days are gone.

  13. Since we are almost to the second live shows of the Idol Reboot, I wish to critique the show thus far—Katy Perry’s makeup and fashion are on point!

  14. First Bobby Bones mentoring and now Rebel. I’m afraid that’s going from bad to worse. Vocal experts should mentor.

  15. I don’t have a problem with Rebel Wilson. I know who she is but I have never followed what she is doing. Nor have I seen any of her movies. So no opinion on that. But a Disney Night again. There are so few shows and limited chances for the contestants to show what they will offer when the show is over. They are not really giving them much of a chance, imo. Yep, I know they will be working musicians. But some of these contestants have seen what some others have accomplished, so I find it hard to believe that none of them have any hopes and dreams for more. Geez. I mean some have voiced desires of supporting their parents so they never need to work again.

  16. I’ve no issue with Rebel as a mentor…she sings, she is in the entertainment business…she has wisdom to impart….zzzzz at the Disney theme again. If they are going to do it every year they should have a rule that nothing performed in the prior season can be performed again. There are hundreds of Disney songs to choose from. Shouldn’t be hard to avoid repeats

  17. why were people complaining about the legendary, ultimate goddess, twice inducted into R&R Hall of Fame, amazing songwriter, singer and performer Stevie Nicks????

  18. I’m not sure how Rebel Wilson is going to be as a mentor, and I don’t really like the Disney theme, but I know it’s because it’s on ABC now. But I do feel that many of the contestants overall have some originality this year with doing their own arrangements, so this could be more interesting, if they are still allowed to do that.

  19. Some of you might not like Disney night but it was the 2nd highest rated show last season behind the premiere so no surprise they brought it back.

  20. I might sleep through the Disney Theme Week… not because of Rebel. Its the ‘corniness of some of the song lyric choices… pretentiousness and unrealistic, terms that come to mind for me… imo of course. :)

  21. Why???? Just because she sang in Pitch Perfect doesn’t make her a singer, she wasn’t given that role because of her voice….she was the weakest singer in the group…saying that I don’t mind the Disney theme, love a lot of Disney songs:))

  22. She was in the Hollywood Bowl productions of Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, but that’s obviously a much more tenuous link than Idina’s Frozen connection. Who knows, maybe we’ll soon find out Rebel was cast in an upcoming movie.

  23. Heh. Considering how most past Idol celebrity mentors would have something to promote on their appearance, definitely keep an eye on present and near future Disney properties…the cross-pollenizational synergy is likely built in to the contract! ?
