Numbers Thread – 07/10/18

Today’s thread is brought to you by the letters ‘D’, ‘R’, ‘A’, ‘K’, and ‘E’.

Drake broke records all over the place this week. He shattered The Beatles’ record of 5 songs in the top 10 of the Hot 100 when he achieved 7. He also broke his own record of the most number of songs on the Hot 100 (27 – his previous record was 24).

Drake also helps Michael Jackson achieve his 30th top 10 while also passing MJ for the career number of top 10s (Drake now has 31 while The Beatles have 34 and Madonna 38). The vocals are from a previously unreleased recording session with Paul Anna (who came into the studio for the making of “Don’t Matter to Me”.

Drake’s “Scorpion” is also his 8th number one on the BB200 despite the new rules for counting streaming this week (1,250 streams on paid subscription on-demand services or 3,750 streams on ad-supported on-demand services equal one SEA). “Scorpion” had 732K equivalent albums and 160K traditional albums. It had a record of 745.9M on-demand streams for one album in one week. Only three artists have managed to have 8 number one albums in a row – the other two are Eminem and The Beatles. “Scorpion” has the number one debut for 2018. I’m not sure how he does it, but Drake consistently gets hits.

I’m just going to leave this here…Green Day’s “American Idiot” returns to the UK chart at number 18 on single sales. The song was originally written about George W. Bush, but a new president is behind this recent resurgence.

Camila Cabello is getting some early Grammy buzz for her break out year. I don’t think she can be nominated as BNA given previous decisions on group members going solo, but the Grammys rewrite the rules every year.
