Numbers Thread – 07/10/18

Today’s thread is brought to you by the letters ‘D’, ‘R’, ‘A’, ‘K’, and ‘E’.

Drake broke records all over the place this week. He shattered The Beatles’ record of 5 songs in the top 10 of the Hot 100 when he achieved 7. He also broke his own record of the most number of songs on the Hot 100 (27 – his previous record was 24).

Drake also helps Michael Jackson achieve his 30th top 10 while also passing MJ for the career number of top 10s (Drake now has 31 while The Beatles have 34 and Madonna 38). The vocals are from a previously unreleased recording session with Paul Anna (who came into the studio for the making of “Don’t Matter to Me”.

Drake’s “Scorpion” is also his 8th number one on the BB200 despite the new rules for counting streaming this week (1,250 streams on paid subscription on-demand services or 3,750 streams on ad-supported on-demand services equal one SEA). “Scorpion” had 732K equivalent albums and 160K traditional albums. It had a record of 745.9M on-demand streams for one album in one week. Only three artists have managed to have 8 number one albums in a row – the other two are Eminem and The Beatles. “Scorpion” has the number one debut for 2018. I’m not sure how he does it, but Drake consistently gets hits.

I’m just going to leave this here…Green Day’s “American Idiot” returns to the UK chart at number 18 on single sales. The song was originally written about George W. Bush, but a new president is behind this recent resurgence.

Camila Cabello is getting some early Grammy buzz for her break out year. I don’t think she can be nominated as BNA given previous decisions on group members going solo, but the Grammys rewrite the rules every year.

  3. Welp Drake is the new Beatles, the new Madonna and the new MJ… he will surely break Madonna’s top 10’s record soon and will break the rest of the Beatles records with his next album. While I was all for including non-physical singles back in the day when No Doubt’s Don’t Speak was refused charting and was a massive radio hit, I kind of feel like the SINGLES chart needs to be more regulated again… maybe in order for a single to chart on the H100 it needs to be released to radio? I don’t know but these 27 song album bombs on the H100 are crazy… however to be fair, if people are really listening to every song on the albums that many times I guess they are the most popular songs of the week…

  5. Drake had a massive week. Since he obliterated the streaming records, it’s hard to see the true effect of the new streaming rules. Of his 27 songs, 22 were NEW and his lowest charting song this week was #57. A lot of other rap acts had big declines (we’ll see if it was mainly because of Drake or because of the new rules). I did notice some BIG gains from Country songs. So, that’s a plus!

  6. I do hope these changes make music more representative of the overall population. This also just shows how massive of an artist Drake is. Its really quite remarkable.

  7. Every one of the songs on “Scorpion” has at least 12 million streams on Spotify. “God’s Plan” has 800+ million streams

  8. Isn’t that unbelievable?! Not one of those streams came from me but I am in awe at how big this guy is!
