If you happened to watch the new Neil Patrick Harris show, Best Time Ever, you saw him pull a prank on The Voice coaches, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams, with the help of host Carson Daley.
Wearing a dark wig and mustache, Neil passed himself off as the host of Austria’s version of The Voice. After a super weird interview that left the coaches scratching their heads, he proceeded to compete in a blind audition. His rendition of “And I Am Telling You” left a lot to be desired. Needless to say, nobody turned around. The ironic thing–Neil can actually sing. His impersonation of a talent challenged wanna-be was pretty spot on.
However, the entire bit was one big promo for the upcoming season, which begins on September 21, and cheapened it a bit. Were the coaches really not in on the joke? In any case, I predict a pretty quick death for Best Time Ever, based on the UK show, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, which airs live from New York. NBC’s attempt to update the variety show fell pretty flat with cheesy, scripted bits that were a waste of NPH’s talent.
