NBC Will Tackle Live Music Man Production

At the NBC Upfront presentation in New York City this morning, it was revealed that the network has a live production of The Music Man in the works.

NBC must have been so encouraged by the success of last winter’s live production of Sound Of Music, starring American Idol alum, Carrie Underwood, that it’s nailing down production rights for musical productions well in advance.

There already is a production of Peter Pan on the schedule, set to air live next winter.   FOX is getting into the act too. A live production of Grease will air on that network in 2015.

The Music Man is a 1957 Broadway musical about a con man that convinces a Midwestern town to buy instruments for a boys marching band program. He falls in love with Marion the Librarian and well…most of you know the story!

The 1962 movie starred Robert Preston as the con man Harold Hill, Shirley Jones (Partridge Family) as Marion and a very young Ron Howard as the little boy, Winthrop (GARY INDIANA, GARY INDIANA!)

The musical was written by Meredith Wilson and Frank Lacey.

In 2003, The Music Man was remade as a TV movie starring Matthew Broderick, Kristin Chenoweth, Victor Garber and Molly Shannon.

NBC has not yet set an air date.
