Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Sep 7-13

Just one milestone to celebrate this Monday Morning. Carrie Underwood, American Idol Season 4 winner, propels her latest debut single “Smoke Break” into the top 15 on Country. This song has moved rapidly and steadily up the chart each week since its release. It is the debut single for her “Storyteller” album which is set to appear on shelves starting October 23rd.

BB makes it official that The Weeknd spent the second week topping the BB200 (145K in combined).

BB was asked about the recent Canadian invasion.. Last week was only the third time that Canadians had succeeded each other on the top of the Hot 100 (Beieber’s “What do You Mean” replaced The Weekend’s “Can’t Feel My Face”). Previously, “All for Love” (Canadian Brian Adam, UKer Sting and UKer Rod Stewart) was replaced by “Power of Love” (Celine Dionne) in 1994 and “Give It to Me” (Timbaland featuring Justin Timberlake and Canadian Nelly Furtado) was replaced by “Girlfriend” (Avril Lavigne) in 2007. Last week featured the only transition featuring Canadian artists only.

The last time Canadians topped the Hot 100 and BB200 also involved Bieber. Carly Rae Jepsen (from Canadian Idol) topped the Hot 100 with “Call Me Maybe” and Bieber topped the BB200 with “Believe” in 2012.

A contributor also notes that the two highest debuting albums for the 2015 year are from Canadians (Drake with 535K and The Weeknd with 412K). Can Bieber make the top 3 all Canadian? There are a lot of 4th Quarter releases to come.
