Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Sep 1-7

The first week of September yielded 4 Mediabase milestones from some of our usual suspects and a newcomer.

Jennifer Hudson, who famously finished 7th on the 3rd season of Idol and went onto recording success by winning an Oscar, has a new album coming out September 23rd. One of the singles heralding that release is “It’s Your World” featuring one of those singers who seems to be able to come back from scandal (I’ve noticed your odds of doing that improve if you are male). The song goes top 15 in UAC this week.

Cher Lloyd is another successful non-winner of her franchise. This X-Factor UK contestant is featured on Demi Lovato’s “Really Don’t Care”. The song is fading on its home format of Pop, but it debuted on AC this week in the top 50.

Phillip Phillips is our sole winner this week making milestones. “Unpack Your Heart” is the Season 11 Idol’s winner’s second single from his second album and the song moved into the top 40 of AAA. It holds 36th on both the HAC and AAA charts.

Our newcomer this week is Ella Henderson from the British version of X-Factor. She finished 6th, but Simon liked her so she got a contract. Her debut single “Ghost” debuts on HAC in the top 50.

  4. Anyone have any guesses about what J-Hud’s 1st week #s will look like when her album drops in 2 weeks? The pre-order hasn’t been charting very high on iTunes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

  5. Thanks Springboard2 for your bringing us the iTunes news. I’m really pleasantly surprised that Danny Gokey’s single and album “Hope in Front of Me” just keeps selling. Such a great thing to see!
The fact that it’s also resurging on Mediabase is good to see, too. CAC is such an unusual chart. Songs, like Mandisa’s “Back to You” can be following for absolutely WEEKS, and then start climbing again, and then go back to falling….. I’ve no idea what their recurrent rules are. Country’s were much more set/predictable!

  6. Here’s the recurrency rules for the Christian charts:

Descending songs are removed from the Mainstream Top 40, Alternative, Triple A, Active Rock, Heritage Rock, Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop, Rhythmic, Christian Songs, Christian AC Songs, Gospel Songs, Dance Airplay and Smooth Jazz Songs charts after 20 weeks and if ranking below No. 15.

  7. Jennifer is not in a genre that is going to result in a lot of digital downloads being sold. It’s definitely not a genre where people feel the need to pre order digital albums. She’s in a genre where people are going to go out and buy the album from a physical store.

That being said, I think that she will sell 20K-40K during her debut week.

  8. Her last album sold 165,000 the 1st week. But she had a bigger 1st hit off the album, “Where You At.” Her 3 singles (“I Can’t Describe,” Walk It Out,” & It’s Your World”) that’s been released from the upcoming album hasn’t done as well on the charts. My prediction is 25K- 40K for her debut week.

  9. Jackie Evancho has another album coming out on September 23 (according to HDD)

  10. Do yall think PTX will be able to outsell JHUD. I am sure they will outsell Jackie though. Right?

  11. #PP @PhillipReq
@Phillips “The World from the Side of the Moon” FINALLY released in the UK on iTunes!! It’s #23 + #51. Buy it now!!

  12. Why is Jennifer Hudson putting out another album? The last two were just generic and most artist tour to promote and help sell their albums. She drops a album and then nothing. The big problem I have with Jennifer is she sounds better singing other people’s music than her own.

  13. Why is Jennifer Hudson putting out another album?

Because her last one sold has almost 500,000, which was outstanding for her genre in 2011? Labels like to release music from artists who successfully move product.

  14. I don’t think it sold almost half a million. I remember them certifying it gold after it’s debut, but she wasn’t even close to that number.

  15. I don’t think it sold almost half a million.

Then why does the post you originally responded to say this:

    Jennifer Hudson (3/22/2011) 165K/458K

I suppose you can argue that being 42k short doesn’t count as “almost” there, but it seems pretty close.

  16. I remember the big conversations because her last album was certified gold (shipments) long before her album even got anywhere close to selling 500K.

  17. most artist tour to promote and help sell their albums. She drops a album and then nothing.

There was an I Remember Me tour in 2011.

She does concert appearances fairly regularly and has shows scheduled for October.

  18. I doubt that Jennifer could put a lot of people in the seats or sell a lot more albums if she toured. Doing a small club tour would not be beneficial to her. I’m sure she can make more with a few appearance fees than she could doing 20 small club dates charging $15. She is high profile enough that she gets offers without grinding in out on the club tour circuit. Even if she got a flat fee, I doubt most of the small clubs could afford her. Now if she toured with someone like Alisa K or John L. it might be worth it, but they have lots of choices and she may not be their choice.

  19. If a publication were rounding the number, it would be posted as 500K. So yeah…I would say almost there.

Jennifer sells records and and also charts in her genre. Of course she’s releasing another album. It’s pretty much a no brainer.

  20. I don’t know…it’s for whatever album they released last November (HDD doesn’t give the titles of the last albums, only the sales #s). :)

BTW, Pentatonix is releasing another Xmas album this year, that comes out in late October

  21. Wonder what took them so long. He went there to promote the album quite some time ago.

  22. Your right, she get paid more for high profile appearances then she would if she actually toured and fans paid to see her in concert. She’s never been what you would call a touring artist.

  23. It is PTX Vol Ii.

PTXmas was originally released in 11/2012 and re-released with bonus tracks in 11/2013.

  24. Her last album sold 458K, which is not too far behind the total for her previous album, so why would she stop releasing music? Jennifer isn’t going to stage a major tour, but just last week she had a television special, and she’s still receiving airplay. There is more than one way to capitalize off of the music.

  26. I just looked at JHud twitter and it seems to me she has been quite busy with appearances over the spring/summer with more coming up this fall. While not a tour she has done a mix of televised and live appearances. Probably about the right mix for someone that is a broadway/film performnces as well as a recording artist.

Garth Brooks leads with 121 monitored adds.

BTW, I decided to add Canaan Smith & Chase Rice from now on. They were both past contestants on reality shows (The Amazing Race & Survivor) which are covered on MJ’s. Canaan was eliminated from Amazing Race due to his girlfriend not wanting to go down a water slide. Chase was runner-up his season of Survivor.

  28. Garth’s new single has got a lot of negative feedback on twitter and I’ve seen comments from radio DJs about how much they hate it. I assume it will get spins early on, but it will be interesting to see if it crashes hard after a couple of weeks.

  29. It’s a bad single choice. I’ve heard big Garth fans also hate it. The single was actually switched. The previous single choice was actually liked by most people’s reaction (including PD’s) I saw. It was switched because they didn’t think radio would play it.

  30. Garth’s sales definitely would have done better if he released it to a bigger retailer. I’m wondering does he receive a cut for other artist’s sales on the digital store since he’s the founder? There are artists such as Miranda Lambert, Brantley Gilbert, Hunter Hayes, etc. all being sold there.

  31. Question: Do the numbers cited here only reflect USA sales or do they also reflect total world sales of the album?

  32. I think that Garth would have a rough time even if his songs were on Itunes. He made a decision long ago to severely limit the access that people have to his music, so his lack of presence on Itunes, in brick and mortar retailers, and even on youtube was bound to hurt sales for the new songs, and even the digital sales of his previous releases.

  35. David Cook’s music is also there. I haven’t checked for others.

  36. Looks like most are there but some more than others. For instance, Kris’ singles/albums are there but Horizons is not listed, Lee is only present for the track he has on The Walking Dead soundtrack & Candice only has her coronation single.

  37. I don’t think Scotty’s latest CD is there either, just the 1st one and his Christmas CD, maybe the plan is to keep visibility for the current one on iTunes.
