Monday Morning Mediabase Update: March 28-April 3

This week, we celebrate 6 milestones on radio – two from each of X-Factor, Idol and The Voice. But first, let’s talk albums…

X-Factor’s Zayn came roaring onto the sales chart this week with a number one debut on the BB200 with 157K in equivalent album sales (112K in pure sales). He becomes the first British solo male artist to debut at number one with his first album. It has been 28 long years since any British solo male artist has topped the chart (George Michael back in 1988 with “Faith”) and the first UK act (solo or group) to debut with his first album at the top of the BB200 since 2012 (when his former group One Direction opened with “Up All Night).

Zayn also becomes one of four solo acts to have number one albums as part of a group and part of a solo act. The others are Justin Timberlake (former member of *NSYNC), Gwen Stefani (former member of No Doubt) and Beyonce (former member of Destiny Child).

You may also recall that he became the first UK artist to top the Hot 100 with his debut single on his debut week (One Direction has never topped the Hot 100 – the closest they have gotten is second a couple of times).

I’d notch this as a success for Zayn.

And he also has a milestone this week. “Pillow talk” (that song that topped the Hot 100) went top 15 on Rhythmic this week. It is also top 10 on Pop and top 30 on HAC.

X-Factor alumni are being embraced by the Rhythmic format as Fifth Harmony’s “Work From Home” also enters the top 15 in that format. They notch a second milestone by going top 40 on HAC while continuing to have a top 15 hit on Pop.

We switch to Idol for our second milestone on HAC this week. Kelly Clarkson is the original recipe American Idol (the franchise is closing down this week :-( ) and was on the show earlier this year to judge and perform “Piece by Piece”. The song rocketed to success based on that and they released a piano version for sale/radio. The song entered the top 15 on HAC this week while also being top 15 on AC and on the Pop chart.

Also from Idol, Lauren Daigle was an auditioned and has now taken the Christian Music genre by storm. Her “Trust in You” went top 5 this week on CAC.

On Season 2 of the Voice, Jordan Rager was eliminated from Team Blake as part of the Battle Rounds. He did not let that stop him and he now has Top 40 Country song (“Southern Boy”) with Jason Aldean.

The next year, Melanie Martinez was on Team Adam where she ended up 6th. She’s been working social media and touring to build up a loyal following of fans which have kept her album selling consistently for months. She released “Pity Party” to radio and it debuted on the Pop charts this week.
