Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Feb 8-14

Four milestones this week – three from X-Factor and one from Idol

Carrie Underwood surges to the top 5 on Country radio with “Heartbeat”. This is her second single of her current album and she will be performing with Sam Hunt at the Gramm’s tonight.

From X-factor, both sides of the Atlantic are represented. Camilo Cabello is part of Fifth Harmony, but she is taking a brief sojourn to duet with Vine sensation Shawn Mendes (though, he’s also a pop star after “Stitches”). “I Know What You Did Last Summer” looks done on Pop, but this week it hit top 30 on HAC.

Fifth Harmony was a band constructed from solo auditioners for the show and so was One Direction (the original XF combined band) on the UK version. Five are now 4, but all 5 hit milestones this week. ZAYN was the first to separate from One Direction and his debut single “Pillowtalk” debuted on the Rhythmic chart this week in the top 40. Meanwhile, One Direction’s third single from their current album (a single called “History”) went top 40 on Pop.

Billboard confirms that Future has the top album of the week with 134K in equivalent albums. This is Future’s third BB200 topper which is all the more impressive when you consider that he’s managed those three top ones within 6 months of each other. That rarely happens. Adele is second this week, but she too is performing tonight so expect a post-Grammy bump from her (Kayne will not be pleased if she up ends his new album – he’s always good for a soundbite when he is annoyed). Third is Rihanna on her third week on the chart.

Coldplay headlined the Superbowl last Sunday and that resulted in a 4th place finish and 90K in equivalent albums (up 265% in EA, 372% in sales and 556% in digital albums). It also helped that Google had their album for sale for 99 cents ($6.99 at iTunes) and because ew are outside of the 4 week debut window, those sales count.

Bieber holds steady at 5th with a 1% increase in equivalent albums as it spends its 13th week in the top 5 since its release. Wiz Kahlifa debuts at 6h, NOW 57 at 7th and Elton John at 8th (this is Elton’s 19th top 10 album – his first was in 1971). twenty one pilots is 9th and Kevin Gates is 10th.

Can anybody spare a dime? It turns out that having multiple hit albums and successful tours doesn’t always pay the bills. Kayne West finds himself in a red position to the tune of $53M. Who amongst us hasn’t found ourselves tens of millions of dollars in debt? Kayne is hoping that Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg can spot a good investment – the dude is worth billions so surely he has a billion to spare. That’s chump change to old Mark. Can’t Kayne’s wife pay his bills? If not, Kayne may want to consider this sound advice from Dickens’s Mr. Micawber: Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery.
