Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Dec 28-Jan 3

Now that the Christmas songs have been fully flushed out of the system, lots of songs return to the charts, there are bullets for almost every song and even a couple of milestones.

Carrie Underwood, winner of Season 4 of American Idol, achieves top 20 on Country with “Heartbeat”. This is her second single from her latest album and is the second single to reach top 20. Expect this song to follow the trajectory of her first single, “Smoke Break” and go very close to number 1 if not number 1.

Lots of acts returning to previous milestones especially on formats that favour country music. Avery Wilson, Haley Reinhart, Kelly Clarkson and One Direction (x2) all return to AC while Ruben returns to a previous milestone on UAC. Pentatonix also sees their song regain chart positions on AC. CAC sees a real changing of the guard with Lauren and Danny’s Christmas songs exiting stage left and non-Christmas songs returning stage right. Colton Dixon also gets his song to return to CAC. Finally, Scotty McCreery on again/off again relationship with the Country chart this era has him back on it.

I believe Lauren Daigle’s “Trust in You” hits a new milestone by reaching top 40 on CAC.

BB reports that Adele has the number one album this week (surprise!). Sales are of course, greatly diminished with “25” dropping 70% to 363K equivalent albums (307K in pure sales). “25” finished the year with 7.44M in sales which is the most an album has sold in a single year since Usher’s “Confessions” in 2004 sold 7.98M. Adele is also the first album to top the BB200 for its first six weeks since BGT’s Susan Boyle did that with “I Dreamed a Dream” back in 2009/2010.

Meanwhile, the Biebs holds onto second for yet another week with a mere loss of 5% in equivalent albums – 217K. His numbers are nothing short of stellar and would be news if Adele’s numbers weren’t stratospheric. One Direction are also doing brisk continued business as the move up to the 4th spot with 75K and a 19% drop.
