Michael Strahan will leave ABC’s Live With Kelly and Michael to join Good Morning America full time, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The news was announced by ABC News president James Goldston in a staff memo. Strahan has been appearing twice a week on GMA since 2014, and will begin full-time on the morning show in September. The former football star will leave Live this summer.
“I look forward to continuing to work with the incredible team at GMA. It is an exciting opportunity to be able to bring unique stories and voices to the audience,” Strahan said in a statement to THR.
He added, “My time with Live With Kelly and Michael has been transformative, and my departure will be bittersweet. Kelly has been an unbelievable partner, and I am so thankful to her and the entire team. I am extremely grateful for the amazing support I’ve received from all of the fans.”
A former New York Giants star and NFL analyst at Fox Sports, Strahan joined Live four years ago. He was chosen as Kelly Ripa’s co-host on Live after Regis Philbin’s retirement in 2011 after 28 years on the show. Beginning this fall, Live will once again audition co-hosts for Ripa.
