The PBS special celebrated its 40th anniversary, but under unprecedented circumstances. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional live A Capitol Fourth was not held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.

Instead, to ensure the health and safety of all involved, PBS pre-taped this year’s concert performances without a live audience. Actor John Stamos and actress and recording artist Vanessa Williams co-hosted the show. The show aired on most PBS stations on the July 4 holiday.

  1. I expect she was asked to sing it, and it’s usually sung for this kind of occasion, but it’s kind of a tone-deaf song for current conditions.

  2. I think Woody’s intent was to point out this land was meant for everyone, so it feels spot on for the state we are in.

  3. Yeah, I love the song and Woody’s intent, but I was thinking how it would resonate with some people. Obviously, many Black people don’t feel this land belongs to them. And as a BLM supporter, I found the song sad.

  4. Very true. And one reason I didn’t care for its being sung by Lauren at this time. And in a very “southern” accent. (Not blaming Lauren BTW.)

We need more Woody Guthries and more Pete Seegers.

  5. Lauren may have been better served if she had told them she would sing a country song or nothing. TLIYL was too far out of her wheelhouse and it showed.
