Kris Allen’s Single Set to Be Released in Two Weeks

Kris Allen recently told The Morning Call in a pre-concert interview that he’ll be releasing a single before the end of September at the latest:

‘American Idol’ winner Kris Allen is well into recording his debut album, but he’s not sure precisely how far.

Allen, speaking in an interview Tuesday before his performance with the American Idols Live tour at Reading’s Sovereign Center, said he’s been recording tracks during stops on the tour, which started July 5 ‘ a month after he signed his contract with 19 recordings and Jive Records.

He said, for example, he was recording Tuesday in Philadelphia with Alex Band from The Calling.

‘But I don’t know exactly how far we are, ‘ he says, laughing.

He knows, however, that a single is being prepared for release right after the ‘Idols Live’ tour concludes Tuesday, and definitely before the end of September. But he steadfastly refuses to release any details on it.

Kris has also been collaborating with Mat Kearney, Joe King of the Fray, Dan Wilson of Semisonic, Claude Kelly, David Hodges, Salaam Remi and Chris Daughtry. His CD is set to be released November 17.

  1. PLEASE release it before the mix104.1 soiree, Jive (if it’s ready, of course). If I can’t go, at least I know they’ll tape the show (if they can) and play the single (if they can) afterwards. I’m really excited to hear it!

  2. So any bets as to whether he debuts his new single at the Sept. 19th concert? (did you get tickets to it, mj?)

I thought it was too early, but hey if he’s saying soon after the tour, well tour ends Sept. 15th.

Oh and the more knowledgeable can help me out here, don’t they have a Ford mini-concert in MI with the winner and runner-up like Sept.17th? So both Kris and Adam, both of whom are sick now, will be performing the next 5 concerts in 6 days, and then doing that. And then Kris will have a gig to possibly roll out his single on Sept. 19th? Brutal.

  3. This is my first year following Idol, and I’m looking forward to hearing what they’ve come up with for Kris. I’m on the fence about whether or not I’ll buy his CD, but am hoping for a great sound that I’ll want to buy. I’m definitely looking forward to hearing the single. And…that brings us closer to the release of Adam’s first single, right? LOL.

  4. I can’t believe I’m about as giddy with anticipation as I was last year for Cook’s debut! Actually, no I’m MORE so…at least I could tolerate and grow to love the Magic Rainbow and had it to tide me over. This is WAY different…”No Boundaries” was the suckiness that sucked a thousand sucks. No one, NO ONE, not even Cook could rescue that. That song should be buried in a lead casket miles below the Earth’s surface never to rise again. I will say thanks to the tour and Kris I went and bought The Killers and Kanye West from iTunes.

But I’ve worn “Brand New Shoes” OUT and I need new stuff! Quoting David, “I feel sick, I feel nervous…”

  5. It’s always been a brutal schedule, and it will always be a brutal schedule. 19 and their record companies want to squeeze every drop of profit out of them while they can.

Is Dan Wilson of Semisonic a new name in the collab list or did I just miss it before this?

Can’t wait for the single! Well, actually, I CAN wait if it makes for a better song. I’m trying to think of an Idol first single out of the gate that I actually liked. Nope. Can’t think of one.

  6. And’ ¦that brings us closer to the release of Adam’s first single, right? LOL.

That is my first reaction but think better leave this thread about Kris only. I’m curious about his new sound too.

  7. I expect it to get “leaked” by the 17th and then released to I-Tunes for sale the following Tuesday.

  8. ‘But I don’t know exactly how far we are,’ he says, laughing.

-I guess he’s not really keeping track since he knows that 19R/Jive will have the last say on what will be included in his album. There’s still plenty of time. November 17 is two months away.

  9. Wow, what a downer way to break the news of your first single.

At least his fans are more excited about it than he is, which is a good thing,LOL

  10. And’ ¦that brings us closer to the release of Adam’s first single, right? LOL.

They are on different labels and each will have their own marketing strategy developed. Adam or Allison could drop their singles first (as Archie did last year and Daughtry/Kat/Kellie did) if their label felt that strategy was best (ie not necessarily dropping first, but dropping N weeks before the album release).

That said, I can’t wait until this year’s crop starts releasing their singles. It’s a first indication of what the albums will be like. Plus, new songs, yay! And since I’m a Kris fan, I like that we know that something sould be coming soon.

LOL! cookbunny! I feel the same way and I have to say I am so glad to see Chris Daughtry taking Kris Allen under his wing. Looking so forward to Kris’ cd.

  12. I think I recall some seasoned AI watchers saying that the next few months would be nerve-wracking. I’m already nervous. So, how nervous and when does it stop?

No Boundaries’ was the suckiness that sucked a thousand sucks.

That song should be buried in a lead casket miles below the Earth’s surface never to rise again.

cookbunny: I just really liked the way that you said this. And I figured it should be repeated again and again and again.

  13. I am very excited to hear that Kris’s single will be released soon. I have already purchased the i-tunes pass so I am hoping we might get it a day or two early (wishful thinking). I love his songs from Brand New Shoes, AI, and the concert and can’t wait to hear what his new album will sound like.

BTW: There are a lot of people excited about his album coming out and can’t wait to hear what he has come up with. However, alot of us really don’t hang out here any longer….

  14. BTW: There are a lot of people excited about his album coming out and can’t wait to hear what he has come up with. However, alot of us really don’t hang out here any longer’ ¦.

Jmom376 – I think NewFan is right. Come back so we can celebrate Kris’ new single. I do agree with you that a lot of us really don’t hang out here any longer, or if we do, it’s on a rare occasion to catch up on Kris Allen news. I know that’s the case with me.

  15. BTW: There are a lot of people excited about his album coming out and can’t wait to hear what he has come up with. However, alot of us really don’t hang out here any longer’ ¦.

    TRUE.

  16. I’m really excited to hear what it sound like! I have confidence that if Kris is happy with it, it will be good, but I guess we don’t know how much control he has. Anyway, with so much new music coming out soon, I think I will have to add music into my grocery budget or something. Food for the soul, right? Yeah that works. Bring on the new music Kris, we’re ready!

  17. What is downer about the way he broke the news about his single?
He said exactly what we want to hear, except for those who are always ready to find faults with everything he says.
He said he knew exactly what it is but he’s not going to say anything. He is not supposed to announce anything. His fans accross all sites we overly excited yesterday. Most of us don’tcome here often these days.
About his album, why should he tell us when he’s nt done and sure of what will be on there? That is Kris and we love him for that! He will not keep your hopes too high but will make you go “wowww!” when you hear him. We love that he says the comsistency is going to be “him”.
    Way to go Kris!

  18. Thanks for giving this interview a separate thread. It kind of got buried at the end of yesterday’s headlines thread. There are a couple of interesting tidbits in here.

    1) a single in two weeks!!! If I was a squee-er, I would be squee-ing right now.

    2) The very next line after you clipped the article is this, ‘I know what it is, but I can’t say anything,’ he (Kris) said.”

I have been thinking for a while that Kris has been so quiet about his album because that is what his people are telling him to do. That quote makes me even more suspicious. What is the purpose of keeping everything so hush-hush at this point? Why can’t he talk about the song? Give us a title or a co-writer. Heck, I still want to know the name of the producer. Something to help build up anticipation for the release of the single.

I am trying to remain optimisitc, but Jive’s lack of promotion so far has been really frustrating. I realize the promotion in the next 6 weeks or so is more important than everything that has happend so far. But there have been several missed opportunities already to get people talking about Kris’s album. The Daughtry collaboration happened when Daughtry had the #1 album on the charts and news about that really should have been “leaked.”

    3) “He says it’s ‘very possible’ he’ll work with other members of the Top 10 on the tour, especially those whose music has the same feel as his. ‘But putting two different styles of music together can be an amazing thing,’ he says.”

If you read that graph in the context of the article, it seems to imply that Kris’s album might include collaborations with other Idol conestants. Matt is the first name that pops in my head. But the quote about two different styles of music would point more towards Allison or Adam.

Has anything like that been done before? I know Kelly had a duet with Tamyra on her debut album. But I cannot think of anything more recent.

  19. He said exactly what we want to hear, except for those who are always ready to find faults with everything he says.

How true! I guess that’s the reason a lot of folks left this site this year – how sad. Oh, well. I’m so excited for Kris and his fans (meaning me too!).

That is Kris and we love him for that! He will not keep your hopes too high but will make you go ‘wowww!’ when you hear him.

    Perfectly said!

  20. We love that he says the comsistency is going to be ‘him’ .

    …………………..

I was actually surprised to hear him say that since one of the other idols caught a lot of flak for saying the same thing. Pretty much word for word.

  21. I am still here (I know) as a Kradam fan! I have the iTunes pass, too, so I expect to get the single *really* soon. I hope he can sing it at one of his upcoming gigs. Oh, and I hope the gang feel better soon. What a bummer if he has to debut it feeling sick! :(

(Side note: mix104.5 is playing LO. I heard ToML and CBTM earlier today. This bodes VERY WELL for Mr. Allen. Plus they luuurrrrve him.)

  22. Kris has said a few things about his album ‘hopefully just being good music’ and he’s hinted at there being something of an added, unexpected twist as well. Leads me to a good feeling. I’m betting that it will be just good music and I’m really curious about the twist. He may not be the best at self-promotion (or maybe he’s just too tired) but he’s really captured my interest by not being too specific. I bet, at times, it’s going to be rockier and, at times, it will have more instrumentation than we would expect. He’s a big Beatles fan remember. So I doubt that his CD will be as stripped down as what we heard on the show. Geeez, I’m squuueeeying a bit. And I’m surprised. I don’t usually squeee. (don’t even know how to spell it)

  23. Yeah I am so excited for his single and album to come out. I listen to Brand New Shoes so much and I almost love all his songs on there. So am sure I’ll love his new CD. Am so happy for Kris. It will be so nice to have some new music of his too listen. I’ll be moving a couple of weeks after his CD comes out.So I’ll have that and Adam’s and hopefully Allison’s cd to listen too on the long car trip. And us Kris fans are happy enough for him. So can’t wait.

  24. All this talk about Kris and he just came on Mix 104.1 Boston singing “Heartless”. I so love this song and Kris too!

  25. I am trying to remain optimisitc, but Jive’s lack of promotion so far has been really frustrating. I realize the promotion in the next 6 weeks or so is more important than everything that has happend so far. But there have been several missed opportunities already to get people talking about Kris’s album.

Forgive me, I didn’t pay too much attention last year to the ins and outs of the Davids and their promotion, and totally missed all things having to do with Jordin Sparks (still do, yaawwnn), but is Jive really not promoting Kris? Because granted his single it coming out later than either Archie’s or Jordin’s, but he still seems to have some gigs coming up that sound good. Not the least of which is the one in Boston sponsored by the radio station and with David Gray. And just because he’s not proclaming it now, doesn’t mean he won’t get tons of promotion and push by Jive when it’s offically announced. I just think that Kris likes to fly under the radar and play things close to the vest. That worked for him on the show and fits his personality more. But I don’t think that will stop Jive from promoting the crap out of this when it’s dropped.

‘He says it’s ‘very possible’ he’ll work with other members of the Top 10 on the tour, especially those whose music has the same feel as his. ‘But putting two different styles of music together can be an amazing thing,’ he says.’

If you read that graph in the context of the article, it seems to imply that Kris’s album might include collaborations with other Idol conestants. Matt is the first name that pops in my head. But the quote about two different styles of music would point more towards Allison or Adam.

I really hope there isn’t a duet with Adam. Not because I wouldn’t personally like it or think that with the right material, they couldn’t do a good job. But because I think that Kris needs his first album to be all him, no more Adam. I feel that Kris gets overshadowed sometimes by Adam anyway, and Kris needs his own space to show himself and his style. Plus with my Adam stan hat on, no way do I want him having any more resentment due to this. I mean not like Adam will be having any duets on his album with the other idols, why should Kris have that? That wouldn’t be fair to Kris (with my Kris fan hat back on).

But Jive’s level of promotion is the same as it has always been. Record labels develop strategies to release information. Strategies designed to build excitement. Dribbling the information out in random interviews, is not the most effective way of doing things. Not everybody will hear it and the message may get muddled. It’s better to have things coordinated.

Sometimes, I’ve been a big fan of a movie series and have followed all the spoilers on-line (because movies generally involve large number of employees and public shoots, there are often lots of leaks). Sure, it keeps excitement up during the long cold months of production, but I find it’s a little less exciting when the marketing starts because I already know all that stuff already. Meanwhile, if I just forget about a movie and get drawn into it when the marketting comes, it can be more instantly exciting. It’s the difference between being part of an underground movement and a big viral “let’s-all-do-it-at-once” thing. Both have their fun aspects and drawbacks.

Also, record labels use information to get perks. Z100 might be willing to spin the crap out of your song if you give them the big release of the song. They get to announce everything first (which makes them look important too and draws in listeners). If everything about the song is widely known already, it isn’t as special to be the first to spin it.

Finally, it gives the label a little flexibility. Should the artist’s main competition suddenly drop a single that sounds almost EXACTLY like the single they selected, they will have some last minute manouvering time to pick a new single (think “Already Gone” and “Halo” and what a disaster that would have been if they were released at the same time). Plus, it allows them to do some anonymous market research if not much is known about the song.

We don’t know a thing about Adam’s first single or Allison’s. I don’t recall hearing anything about a “Cowboy Casanova” prior to Carrie’s big scheduled roll out release. I seem to recall Archie’s first single was just suddenly there (not a lot of pre-amble). Jordin’s debut single did get mentioned in a press release a couple of week’s early (I don’t think the song was mentioned, just that it was coming), but that’s an understandable exception since they were also announcing her signing at that point. This is standard record label stuff.

Sure, it’s frustrating not to know much, but there is a plan involved and it’s a tried and tested plan. Plus, look at the mountains of criticism Danny faced for blabbing things before the label wanted him to. Kris is smart to listen to his label. They should know marketing stragety better than him. Plus, no point in pissing off the marketing department days before your first single is to be released.

  27. What is the purpose of keeping everything so hush-hush at this point? Why can’t he talk about the song?

I’ve also wondered this. Is it just Kris’ way of doing things or is it part of his general promotion strategy (and if so, why)?

but is Jive really not promoting Kris? Because granted his single it coming out later than either Archie’s or Jordin’s, but he still seems to have some gigs coming up that sound good. Not the least of which is the one in Boston sponsored by the radio station and with David Gray.

He should be locked into the studio with no way of escaping! I fear they will wear him down … though I totally understand, if someone asked me if I wanted to play a gig with David Gray I would say, hell yeah!

  28. “His fans accross all sites we overly excited yesterday. Most of us don’tcome here often these days.” — Vanjess38

    So, so true.

Looking forward to Kris’s album. Actually listened to the two Idol CDs I purchased on the drive to get my son from school. I love Kris’s voice and Allison singing Bonnie Rait and of course, Mad World…

  29. I’m so excited to hear Kris’ single! I can’t believe we are just weeks away from NEW music! And no, there is no “downer” here. Kris is just low-key but I can’t help feel that he has a surprise up his sleeve. I’m not sure what – maybe a more “rock” edge to the sound? IDK, but it’s a feeling I have. Not, however, a duet with any of the Idols, especially not Adam. Not for the first single. I think that would be crazy. The single needs to establish Kris’ direction as a solo artist- it is definitely not the time for a duet.

But down the road, after he, Adam and Allison have established careers – sure I’m all for that!
    :-)

  30. That wouldn’t be fair to Kris

I agree with this 100%….Even though I wish they made a full single out of “I will remember you” the duet they did with the Ford commercial, Which I think both sounded great and the harmonies amazing, (plus huge sentimental song for the Kradam universe.) I think they both need to make their own individual mark. After they are both established and successful then I would welcome a duet with Adam and Kris. Looking forward to Kris’s single!!!!

  31. Well, I gotta admit. The kid’s single sounds like it will be terrific.

  32. Well Kris and Allison share the same label, so they might have a duet.

  33. I’m really excited to hear what it sounds like! I have confidence that if Kris is happy with it, it will be good, but I guess we don’t know how much control he has.

eek. I’m NERVOUS, so bear with me peeps.

I’m still concerned that there too many cooks in there, mixing up the broth and maybe turning into watery blandness.

I’m also worried about the JIVE promotion. They could afford to be passive when it was someone like Fantasia or Kelly, but Kris needs some help here — he has to overcome all the sniping about how he had no business beating Adam, or somehow the vote was rigged.

I’m also worried that they’ve just rushed this thing along to the point where, even if Kris loves it, he hasn’t had enough time to give it his best shot. And I’m worried this really may just be his only BIG shot — though it’s comparing kumquats to strawberries, he’s going to be contrasted bigtime against whatever Adam and even Allison puts out, unfairly but it’s unavoidable.

Other than all the above, I’m delighted to be hearing something new from the charmin’ and sweet-voiced boy….

  34. Wasn’t Kris spotted out with Matt a day when he was supposed to be recording?

  35. Wait, I didn’t know that the iTunes pass came with a download of his first single. Are we sure about that? I just recently gave in and bought the damn pass so I haven’t the slightest idea about anything really.

I’m excited. I think the chances of Kris performing the single at the Ford event and the Boston radio event are high if he already knows what the single’s going to be. Although I wonder how that will work out. Will he perform by himself? Or will he have time to find a band? It’ll be a bit weird if we get to hear a stripped version before the actual radio single.

I also agree with people who think that Kris is keeping silent because Jive is telling him to be. I don’t really know the strategy but I’m not a music exec so what can I really say about things. Personally, I don’t think he is being a downer about his album at all. But for those people who feel like he is, it’s probably better for them that their expectations aren’t higher than anyone can actually reach. I’m hoping that everyone is surprised in a good way.

  36. If you read that graph in the context of the article, it seems to imply that Kris’s album might include collaborations with other Idol conestants. Matt is the first name that pops in my head.

From all the recaps, I’m hoping that Matt will get a break, and maybe this will be one way to get Matt on the road to a record contract. As Truthiness said, it probably wouldn’t be beneficial for Kris to do a song with Adam for the CD, since it should be focused on Kris, the winner of AI season 8, and having Adam on there might lead to continuing the comparisons, (which don’t make sense, when you have 2 very different styles), and talk focused on Adam instead of Kris.

I would love to see Kris light up when talking about his CD, though. Even if he’s been told not to say anything, I want to see his eyes light up when he’s asked about it. Maybe he’s just waaaaay too tired for that to happen. Can’t blame him. I’m exhausted just thinking about the schedule they’ve had. No wonder they’re all sick.

But, I am definitely looking forward to hearing what Kris’s sound will be, and excited about the upcoming release. And, apparently more excited about Kris than the webinar I’m supposed to be paying attention to right now. :)

  37. Has anything like that been done before? I know Kelly had a duet with Tamyra on her debut album. But I cannot think of anything more recent.

Kelly and Justin even made a movie together. It was terrific!

  38. Maybe by working with another Idol he just means touring with them, not a duet? If Kris and Allison did some gigs together that would fit the definition of putting 2 styles of music together that would be a fun show to watch.

  39. Working with another Idol could mean writing a song together…I can see such a thing happen with someone like Matt. Didn’t both of them talk about how they wanted to do things together if Idol didn’t work out for them? It wouldn’t be the first time such a thing happened, Ace and Chris were friends on the show and they co-wrote on “It’s Not Over”.

  40. I don’t think the chatter before the song drops matters THAT much. If the song is good people will respond to it regardless. He’s going to get plenty of curious ears just on the strength of being the Idol winner. And if the song is good that in and of itself will stimulate interest in his album. Once the single drops, he will be out doing radio and national press as part of the promo for the song and album.

  41. I don’t think the chatter before the song drops matters THAT much. If the song is good people will respond to it regardless.

    Agree.

Working with another Idol could mean writing a song together’ ¦

My vote is he co-wrote a song with Matt, but he is not sure yet it will make the album. Or he co-wrote with Adam. I don’t think he means a duet, they all need to get away from the AI label they have.

  42. Kris’ seeming lack of enthusiasm makes me nervous for him. I know he’s “laid-back”, but to be unsure of just where the album is at this point, let alone the single, just doesn’t inspire confidence that he is getting enough input into the recording. This close to the end of the tour would seem to be a good time to start pushing Kris as an artist separate from just AI. I’m an Adam stan, but a Kris fan, too. I worry that so much ballyhoo about Adam’s song for 2012 is going to overwhelm Kris news (not to his fans, of course). It would be nice to have a little excitement out there for him, too.

  43. Kris strikes me as being someone who has a path marked out for himself and he doesn’t care too much what other people think. He’s survived all of the sniping about his beating Adam and all of the nasty Kris-Adam comparisons that have been going on during this tour. and he seems to be ok … to have risen above it. And I don’t think that he ever especially wanted to win Idol. I get the feeling that he just wants to make his own music, have it be great music, have some longevity and garner some industry/peer appreciation. So, I keep looking at all of this business, AI and marketing hoopla … and wondering how he can work it so that it all fits with his goals and not with other peoples’ agendas. I suspect that Adam wants (secretly or otherwise) to have a career like Madonna’s and that’s great. He might actually do it. But I never got the sense that Kris wants anything quite that big. My sense is that he’s just got to start well and get out from under stupid expectations and even stupider comparisons. Then he can get on with his own career aspirations. But I’m, primarily, an Adam fan (Kradison as well) and perhaps that skews my view of things.

Would it be hard for him to survive the 19/Jive experience if his numbers etc. don’t meet some predetermined “Idol” objective?

  44. Wouldn’t the obvious choice for an Idol duet partner be Donny Gokey to get crossover interest from the country fans?

  45. For my sake, it would be amazeballs if the first single is a Kradam duet.

For Kris’ sake, and Adam’s sake – I hope it’s not.

But darnit, I want a Kradam duet! I’m so selfish.

  46. I worry that so much ballyhoo about Adam’s song for 2012 is going to overwhelm Kris news (not to his fans, of course).

I disagree with this. It’s great that Adam is getting buzz about 2012, but it has nothing to do with the fact that Kris is coming out with a new single, especially now that the season has been over for months and the tour is about to end next week. I know it’s a futile effort, but the reality is that Kris’s career has nothing to do with Adam’s and vice versa.

Unless we’re talking about the comment count on MJ’s, LOL. But this will probably be easier to see a year from now once the media and fans are focused on the next batch of finalists.

ETA: Somehow after that duet of theirs, I don’t think Kris is all that eager to work with Danny. But it could happen! I’d be surprised as heck.

  47. Unless we’re talking about the comment count on MJs, LOL

We tend to become a bit homeblind, don’t we?

  48. I’m not even a Matt fan, but it would be really sweet of Kris to include Matt on his CD.

Everything is getting so close. It’ll be exciting to finally hear the idols on the radio.

  49. Kris’ seeming lack of enthusiasm makes me nervous for him.

I’m not worried about this at all. I think it’s very consistent with Kris’ nature to not be too forthcoming. He’s just not going to go around saying how”siiiiicckk” his new single is going to be. On the other hand, if Adam didn’t display his enthusiasm and delight when talking about his album – that would be weird. It’s who he is. And it really makes no difference one way or another – both just have to deliver great music and I have confidence they can both do that.

You are so right. There are 330 million people in the USA. Some of them are going to love Kris, some Adam, some both, and many neither. There is plenty of people to love both of their songs and for both of them to be hugely successful. The more important issues is good music. I am hoping and pretty sure that they both will fulfill that aspect.

  51. Woo hoo! Can’t wait for new materials from these guys. Kris’s first single will be great, I just know it. I love his voice.

Kris fans, you guys should hang around and play more!

ETA: And Adam fans, please don’t make this thread about Adam. This is all about Kris :)

  52. Of course Kris doesn’t know how far along the album is. He’s still having writing sessions, he’s recorded a lot, but the more songs there are to choose from, the more likely there will be good songs chosen for the album. He could think they’re 80% done, and next week might write 4 great songs and want to include them in place of something already recorded.

Hey, dietcoke, did you go and see Alisan?

Sorry Saga, I don’t know what you mean by that?

  54. as anything like that been done before? I know Kelly had a duet with Tamyra on her debut album. But I cannot think of anything more recent.

I know that Clay Aiken and Kimberley Locke did a duet together and I think it was on both of their albums. (Don’t quote me or shoot me if I may be wrong.) I know it was definitely on Kimberley’s Album

  55. Ah, sorry, I thought you said the other day that you might go and see the live perfomance with Alisan (Adams friend), Jason Castro, Alex Band etc in LA. Just wondered if you went.

  56. Yeah for Kris and his fans!!! hang in there… hopefully 2 weeks will not be long. Out of curiousity I looked up Cooks release date from last year, it was the 23rd. I believe. That puts it roughly 10 days after the end of tour.

    Yeah Kris.

  57. Wouldn’t the obvious choice for an Idol duet partner be Donny Gokey to get crossover interest from the country fans?

I don’t know what you are talking about. There is no Idol contestant that has ever been called Donny. Are you sure you aren’t confusing him with teen Idol Donny Osmond? Was he the one that was a little bit country or was it his sister?

Or perhaps you are thinking Don Henley? Although, really he’s rock and not country. Couldn’t be Donny Hathaway because he’s R&B and most people wouldn’t mistake R&B for country unless they were severly clueless. And Donnie (note the spelling) Walhburg was another teen Idol, but again, not too country.

Must be Donny Osmond, but I think you’ll find he’s too busy on dancing with the stars. It would be a combination that most people wouldn’t suspect, so kudos for thinking of it.

  58. Wouldn’t the obvious choice for an Idol duet partner be Donny Gokey to get crossover interest from the country fans?

You’re right, hwc, Adam should get right on that.

There is a certain pathos in how for many Idol fans, there’s an emptyiness to actually enjoying a musician for his or herself. They haunt the threads about singers they dislike on a daily basis, eaten up with frustration at the idea that other people might enjoy a different set of pipes or tunes then they do. C’est la vie, C’est le Idol.

From the time Kris’ song drops till next January is the heyday of this year’s Idol album fanwars. The funny thing is, nothing will be certain till both the winner and runner ups album has been out about a month or six weeks. Even opening week sales aren’t definitive: Jordin had the weakest opening week, but has outpaced many other promising singers. Taylor’s first week was higher then Kelly’s–though she went on to outpace him by millions and millions of records sold.

Many are the predictions, hopes, doubts, parades rained on between now and then, but ultimately radio play and the larger record buying audience will make the determination, not the online stans.

  59. @alex_band working in the studio putting together @KrisAllen4Real vocal takes, his voice sounds awesome on this track//omg. awesome!!!

Indeed. The promotion will all the be there and worked for when the single drops and it’s up to the product and the unknown factor of the market, to determine how well the single, and his album does. Same for the rest of the idols and his laid-backness won’t hinder that, or even really matter. The 19 and Jive machines are already well established and Kris is going to work with them to make and promote his single/album, I’m sure.

Just because Kris isn’t doing verbal cartwheels in interivews, doesn’t mean he doesn’t mean either a.) he’s not excited about his music being produced (it’s his dream, of course he’s excited) b.) that Jive isn’t behind him 100%. To that I bow to Kirsten’s knowledge about season’s past Jive’s strategies.

I think Kris is fine and I’m looking forward to hearing what he produces. I hope I like it! And I’m really excited for his stans. How cool! New, original music from their fave will be produced soon, that’s exciting.

  61. Neither Allison (same label) nor Adam (same under 19E) has selected their single yet, or maybe they have but won’t reveal it, so I don’t think Kris is playing downer here.

What I’m worried about is Jive rushes Kris into this grueling schedule in trade off of quality. Kris didn’t sound he had much control on what would end up in HIS album. I remember about a week ago he said he was half way in recording and now suddenly his single has been picked.

It’s quite possible that Kris has his favorite early in the process, or maybe Kris’ album has a cohesive sound so it’s easy to pick up a single to represent the whole album. I hope I’m thinking so much.

Ah, sorry, I thought you said the other day that you might go and see the live perfomance with Alisan (Adams friend), Jason Castro, Alex Band etc in LA. Just wondered if you went.

I thought you were talking about our Alison here. No, we didn’t make it because it was a big college football night for my hubby and he had to watch every post game analysis. :(

  63. It seems like some people are mistaking Kris’ natural low-key attitude with a lack of excitement. This was a newspaper interview, first of all, so we have no way of knowing what his expression was. He could have been jumping up and down or smiling wildly for all we know. Secondly, Kris has said in his more recent interviews that he is very happy with the way his album is going. For whatever reason, he’s clearly been told by 19/Jive not to give out too many details about his upcoming stuff. So I don’t know why some people are in “doom and gloom” mode.

Of course, although Adam’s talked a lot about who he’s working with, HE’s not exactly giving out a bunch of details about his album or first single either — just vague stuff about how his album will mix electronic/dance/pop/rock. So it’s not like we really know a ton more about Adam’s upcoming single/album than we do about Kris’. And we probably know MORE about Kris’ than we do about Allison’s. So why don’t I see much “doom-and-gloom” about the other two’ upcoming singles/albums?

I’m staying cautiously optimistic. From the little I’ve heard/read, it sounds like both Kris and Adam have had a fair amount of creative input with their debut album. Both have said they are happy with the way 19 and their label have dealt with them. Not sure about Allison — she seems happy, but I think she likely has had less creative control than the two guys, since she’s younger and doesn’t have the experience with writing/recording that Kris and Adam do.

  64. I’m so excited for Kris’s single to be released! I’ve about worn out my iTunes with BNS and the AI recordings. I need new Kris music! :)

Yep. I saw an interview recently with Jordin where she said she recorded her album in about 4 weeks after the tour ended. Other than the first single, he probably doesn’t have any songs completely finished yet, and then once they do have finished songs they’ll actually choose what makes it on the album. They do a lot of work while touring, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.

  65. Why do some people sound so worried? This is great news. A new Kris Allen single in 2 weeks! WooHooooo people.

Here’s what he says about his album:

His album, now scheduled out Nov. 17, will be ‘soft rock, with a little singer-songwriter thing in it, but not too much,’ he says. ‘It’s difficult to explain, but it’s cool. You’ll just have to listen.’

Though songs on the disc ‘will have different feels, the thing that’s consistent to all of them is me,’ he says. But he says there will be no surprises and he hasn’t done any type of music he hadn’t expected to. ‘Everything does have an organic feel to it, which is good.’

Sounds good to me. It sounds like it may have a mixed genre feel, which – as we all know by now – I like.

So, here’s to Kris and his new single.

Re. A duet with Adam, highly improbable. I think Jive realizes that Kris needs to shine on his own, without reference to Adam, now that he has his album. Why would they ever want continue linking the two names, when in many cases it was at the advantage one and at the cost of the other.

If there is a collaboration, I think it’s either Matt or maybe even Allison.

I also think he will probably debut at the Boston gig with David Gray. Gray has a new album coming out on Sep 14th, so his set for the gig will have quite a few new songs. I’m sure Kris’s set will also feature his single, if for nothing more than not to be outshined by Gray.

    Congrats Kris and good luck.

  66. 1.i’ve said this before but If ANYONE makes this thread about Adam,I WILL cuuuut u;)2.OMFRIGGINK!!!!!!!!!!! I’M SO DAMN EXCITED.CRYING FLAILING ETC.CAN’T WAIT.I’M XEFINETLY GOING TO BUY IT!!!!!!!! OMK!!!TEARS !!!:D

  67. Also If there is a collaboration I don’t care if it’s Adam I will cut someone.collaboration with idol person I mean.and, yes I am feeling violent today.thanks for asking;)

  68. I don’t think the chatter before the song drops matters THAT much. If the song is good people will respond to it regardless. He’s going to get plenty of curious ears just on the strength of being the Idol winner. And if the song is good that in and of itself will stimulate interest in his album.

I totally agree. Good music sells itself, it garners buzz by word of mouth and youtube plays. Also, the AI winner’s title carries it’s own brand marketing value. People will hear the single, and if they like it, they will buy it and the album.

Kris will be fine, I anticipate good sales. His album really does sound like it could be quite good from the way he describes it. I wont predict chart numbers because I would be pulling out of my ass at this point. There’s simply no way of knowing for any of the idols. I do predict a good performance though. No disasters where Kris is concerned I don’t think.

Oooh, getting more excited with every post. Three or four more posts, and I may find myself flailing. LOL

  69. Kris is smart to listen to his label. They should know marketing stragety better than him. Plus, no point in pissing off the marketing department days before your first single is to be released.

Thank Kristen! I always enjoy reading your posts and this one even made me feel better. I don’t want to become one of those fans who is always worrying about their favorite Idol’s future career. (Reading this blog everyday probably does not help my cause much.) But the wait can be so frustrating at times. Hopefully Jive’s marketing strategy will all start to make sense in two weeks.

Forgive me, I didn’t pay too much attention last year to the ins and outs of the Davids and their promotion, and totally missed all things having to do with Jordin Sparks (still do, yaawwnn), but is Jive really not promoting Kris?

I should have said Kris’s camp instead of Jive. (Who is Kris’s manager? Does he even have a manager?) You’re right – both the Boston radio gig and the Napa Valley event sound more Jive-related than Idol-related.

I don’t normally follow the contesants this closely after the season is over, so maybe this is the normal timeline. But I do think I read here that RCA released a press release in August announcing David Cook’s producer. I’d be happy just knowing that.

My vote is he co-wrote a song with Matt, but he is not sure yet it will make the album.

I would really like that as well. Even if I would personally love it a Kradam duet or collaboration on the album does not make much sense.

  70. 1.i’ve said this before but If ANYONE makes this thread about Adam,I WILL cuuuut u;)2.OMFRIGGINK!!!!!!!!!!! I’M SO DAMN EXCITED.CRYING FLAILING ETC.CAN’T WAIT.I’M XEFINETLY GOING TO BUY IT!!!!!!!! OMK!!!TEARS !!!:D

Will you buy it even if he doesn’t sing about homies, luv? Yeah, I lurk enough to know that about you ;)

  71. I think he’ll probably play Heartless only because that station seems to like spinning it. Then there is a chance that he’ll perform the new single there too. Other than that I wonder how long his set will be?

I don’t think any contestant gets much say on what goes on their album. It’s definitely a cause for concern because I imagine labels to be very risk averse and go for the lowest common denominator. But hopefully they can strike a balance between songs that reflect who Kris is as an artist and songs that are accessible to as many people as possible. Also it seems like Kris has done a lot of writing and co-writing this summer so the chances of getting songs he approves of on the album is higher than it usually would be.

Would love to know who wrote his single. Oh, and his producer of course. That information usually comes out before we get to hear it right?

  72. I love you, luv. :)

There will be NO Kradam duet, at least not this time around, for obvious reasons, along with the fact that they did NOT sound good on We Are The Champions, IMO. I can’t see a song that fits both of their voices.

I would barf if Kris did a duet with Danny. I would, however, be jumping up and down if there was a collaboration with Matt. Their voices are similar enough that it could work. Maybe they could both play instruments! Maybe they will co-write it!

I assume that with the iTunes pass we’ll get the single as soon as it’s released. However, I have never pre-ordered an album before (of course, I will with Adam’s album), but I am hopeful. I want Kris’s single!

  73. As far as possible duets with the S8 Idols, Kris and Matt have talked in the past about wanting to do a duet, so that could be a possibility. I could see that working out well, because their styles are pretty compatible and you would have two strong musicians with Matt on piano and Kris on guitar.

I would be excited to see Kris and Adam work together — but not until they are both established as separate solo artists. Then they wouldn’t have to worry so much about Adam “overshadowing” Kris. I think they could come up with something wonderful if they did duet, but for the sakes of both their careers, it’s probably better if they hold off on that until they have more experience under their belts and have shown they can be successful as solo artists. Not to mention that all the Kradam fans would probably be happy to see a collaboration a few years down the road, if for no other reason than it would be a sign that the friendship and connection between the two guys survived post-Idol separation.

  74. I love u too suebrody :)

gulfluv LOL actually I thought bout that.;).hell yeah I’ll buy the single ,probably noooot the lbum though.except for yknow homies.yall kno I love my homies :)

    I should probably do my homework tonight.I have a lot and yesterday I went to bed at 1:( is there a concert tonight? it’s back to school night so my prenta aren’t here tonight.with my luck I bet there isn’t though.D;

  75. I’m very excited to hear Kris’s single is coming out!!! I’m a big fan of his particular style and voice (hope it is similar to what he’s been pitching on the show and in concert. I’ll definitely be buying his CD when available in Canada… ( Still waiting to get my hands on Elliott’s second CD… so far haven’t seen it up here north of the border :( )

  76. I’m soooo excited to hear Kris’ single!! Can’t wait ‘“ Go Kris!!

  77. Why do some people sound so worried? This is great news. A new Kris Allen single in 2 weeks! WooHooooo people.

Yeah, colour me confused. I think this is great news!

I mean the only thing I worry about is the quality because 19Evil suck, but I worry about that for all idols (and usually with good cause). Despite that most of them have done very well with their first singles and I’m sure Kris is going to do extremely well with it and his album. The only other thing I worry about is the end of tour, then going right to promoting what with his being sick and all, but that’s not going to do anything to his success. I just hope he gets some rest as soon as he can and feels better soon, poor kid.

  78. There is a concert Luv, but you should probably skip it in favour of doing your homework, and maybe even hanging out with some friends tonight. The guys are all sick, so it probably wont be an epic show anyway.

Go ahead darling luvie, have a life away from the internetz. We’ll keep you posted on all the happening when you check back tomorrow. :D

  79. Is it normal to have a single picked out before the album is finished? What if a better song comes along after the single is released? I ask because I know nothing about all this stuff. Kris and Adam should never ever do a duet together. Kradam needs to end now.

  80. I also hope that Kris and Adam didn’t do a duet on Kris’s album. IMO these two need to get away from each other and establish themselves as solo artists. Maybe then the comparisons will stop. Anyways, good luck to Kris. I hope his single is a hit.

  81. I can see an Allison/Kris duet something in the vein of Falling Slowly/Time after Time. Allison’s voice sounded lovely in that on the finale and her husky voice with Kris’s could sound great on a ballad.

Having said that though, I can’t see the two of them touring together. Each of them need to establish themselves away from the AI bubble as artists, and touring/duetting may not do that. I think they’ll all be successful and I wish Kris the best of luck! (don’t really think he needs it though)

  82. Thanks sunn!!! I hve a lot of stuff to do (homework ugh ) but maybe I’ll stop by around Adam’s set ? so I’ll do this early:emoemoemoemoemoemoemo EMO;)

  83. Yay, I’m so excited for Kris! I can’t wait to hear his first single.

He must be feeling better, even though he doesn’t look it. Since everyone is getting sick on the bus, is it really smart to go out and sign at the barricades?? GERMS PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!

  85. Has anyone considered that Anoop might be the collaborator? At one point, Anoop said that he and Kris had hoped to do a duet on the tour, but that became impossible once Kris won. Plus Anoop is moving to LA, so he’d be around to record with Kris if need be, and we already now that Anoop is really, really good at harmonizing and blending voices.

I’ve convinced myself this is a really good idea. Now I just need to hit up somebody who actually counts!

  86. Kris looks a little better in that photo from today — not as ghostly pale. Hopefully he’s feeling better

  87. I mean the only thing I worry about is the quality because 19Evil suck, but I worry about that for all idols (and usually with good cause).

I think we can take it for granted that none of the 4 freshman Idol albums will be high musical art. None will be breaking any new ground, or establishing a concrete sound. All will be commercial and somewhat generic. The only question is, to what degree?

I hope none of the albums suck. I also hope, that each will have at least one track that will prove signature for their brand. A signature song off an introductory album is essential I think, and goes a long way towards securing that elusive second issue.

  88. Girlygirl,

do you think that twitpic is really from today?? There are pictures on the headlines thread of her with other idols and the Adam one looks like from the other night. I think he has stage makeup on, so after the show?? I think I read that mom’s recap of her child’s talk with Adam on Adam Official, but can’t be sure. What do you think??

  89. CindyM

I went on the twitter page of the person who posted these pictures — and it looks like that all of her photos with the Idols are from the Grand Rapids show — although she’s jsut getting aroud to posting them today. Oh well…

  90. Here’s some potentially exciting news about Kris’ album.

    Alex Band tweeted the following:

#working in the studio putting together @KrisAllen4Real vocal takes, his voice sounds awesome on this track.#
about 2 hours ago from TwitterFon

(funny twitter oops from someone named threescompany who tweeted Alex about this…

about 2 hours ago from TweetDeck in reply to alex_band

    @alex_band sick… sick… sick… dumb iPhone auto correct!about 2 hours ago from TweetDeck in reply to alex_band)

  91. no downer for me .. it did the announcement in his laid back way.
I’M SO EXCITED THAT HIS SINGLE WILL COME OUT SOON!!!!!!!
I like so much his style and voice that I even liked NoBo, so I’m 100% that I’ll have a blast when it comes out

  92. I’m sure with Kris being older and hopefully wiser he will have a bit more control over his single and his album than the other AI Jive artists.

I remember that Archie’s single was released during the AI tour and that there may have been a few rumours about the title, but nothing concrete. The single was spun for the 1st time on Kiss 100 in New York and when I say 1st Time that is an absolute truth. Archie had never heard the finished product before the big day…he didn’t have a clue as to what the producers were and did do with his voice and his over dubbing and what the finished product was going to sound like. And the single was re-addressed before the album came out and was changed up slightly for better sound quality.

Subsequent to that Archie (as Jordin before him) didn’t have a lot of say-so in the tracks that ultimately made the album. His cover of Angels was pretty bland…and the scuttlebutt was that Jive didn’t like his take on the song and requested that he sing it pretty much “straight-up” even though he had been refining the song over 50 shows on tour.

Also, most of Archie’s own material was relegated to “bonus songs” and didn’t make the album, and one song he really liked didn’t even get a mention. (Zero-Gravity was distributed after the fact as a bonus single).

Now, I am sure that Kris probably has a stronger and more willful center than Archie and, hopefully, he can make his voice heard above TPTB. But I am sure, as a type this, that his producer and the sound engineers are taking some of his already recorded material and are adding all the necessary “fluff” to make it into an actual single. I’ll bet that it won’t be an acoustical track and that it will have a lot of over dubbing and backing tracks. Not saying that the song will be “bad”, probably far from it, but it won’t be vintage Kris Allen like a lot of people fell in love with on the show.

  93. I’m excited about the new single. Kris may not get the uber-hype that Adam does, but he never has, so why would this be any different? He’ll live or die by the music, and I’m sure he wouldn’t have it any other way.

  94. Not saying that the song will be ‘bad’ , probably far from it, but it won’t be vintage Kris Allen like a lot of people fell in love with on the show.

This is also what I’m a bit afraid of considering how short time is given for finding the right songs, recording and mixing. Would be so neat to learn something on who is producing. We’ve learned quite a number of song writers but I think there is really no info regarding who is producing( at least what I’ve seen). Knowing the producer could possibly give a clue to what the sound will be like.

Being very hopeful and extremely giddy nonetheless!
Oh and heartless is on again on mix! :D

  95. I think this is very smart of Jive to get a single out ASAP. David Cook had a coronation single with legs. Kris sounded great on No Boundries. but the song sucked and died. Also, I’m real excited because this advance single may mean that No Boundaries is NOT on Kris’s CD, not even as a bonus track. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

Can’t wait. Very excited. I rarely like what ultimately comes from the AI contestants after the show is over. I SO want to love Kris’s CD. (fingers crossed).

  96. MJ,

Are you going to be updating the Historical Charts? I noticed they haven’t been updated in a while as we don’t have any information on the first week sales of debut albums of Brooke White and Michael Johns. With 5 Idols coming out with albums in November and singles this month, watching the sales numbes is going to be quite interesting. The more statistical information on sales the better.

  97. I stand corrected that is 4 Idols with debut albums in November since it looks like you only reflect the first week sales of debut albums. Is there any way you can also reflect the total album sales of all the Idols? Are those numbers available?

  98. Im actually excited….does this coincide w. the David Gray concert appearance he is making? sorry i havent read the entire thread :)

  99. I’m excited about the new single. Kris may not get the uber-hype that Adam does, but he never has, so why would this be any different? He’ll live or die by the music, and I’m sure he wouldn’t have it any other way.

    I agree with this.

  100. I can’t wait to hear this single, I can’t believe how excited I am. I have a feeling it’s going to be one of the songs that Kris wrote with Joe King, he seemed so excited about the songs that they came up with.

  101. I can’t wait to hear this single, I can’t believe how excited I am. I have a feeling it’s going to be one of the songs that Kris wrote with Joe King, he seemed so excited about the songs that they came up with.

    This is my bet too!

  102. Now, I am sure that Kris probably has a stronger and more willful center than Archie and, hopefully, he can make his voice heard above TPTB.

I hope he states his case but then does what they say. Blake Lewis bucked the system, pushing for “How Many Words” as a second single and not only did it tank, I’d be willing to bet the fuss he put up over it sealed his fate at J records.

I want Kris to do well and I want Kris to express himself but at the end of the day he’s a new artist and needs to keep his mouth shut until he has built up the necessary clout. After all, each year new AIers come along and those who are annoying but not profitable are easily replaced.

  103. I don’t see this single as being “advanced.” If it had come out in August, then, yeah. But David Cook’s single, Light On came out Sept 23rd which is approx when Kris’ song will be released. Kris was my pick to win last May, but I am a little concerned by his lack of… I don’t even know what to call it. Enthusiasm, maybe? I know he’s a chill dude, but really. His constant refusal to talk about the single/album worries me. I think I’ll like his album no problem, but you’ve got to have some small bit of buzz coming out of the gate, and I just don’t see it. Kris needs to learn how to sell himself, if he wants to make it in the business, that’s all I’m saying.

And on a different note, mj, I still can’t read all the comments on each article. It will say something like 75 comments in the header, but I can only see about 30-ish, maybe one page worth. I’m sure you’re working on it, but wanted to let you know I, at least, am still having trouble. Thanks!

  104. What I’m worried about is Jive rushes Kris into this grueling schedule in trade off of quality. Kris didn’t sound he had much control on what would end up in HIS album. I remember about a week ago he said he was half way in recording and now suddenly his single has been picked.

It’s actually pretty common for the first single to be picked before an entire album is finished.

I prefer his approach to the bragging other AIers have done in the past about how wonderful, marvelous, fantastic their albums are. Playing it close to the vest now will keep him from having to eat his words down the road. Besides, the only people paying attention right now are the hardcore fans. When it’s actually time to promote a viable product, he’ll do the interview and performance circuit. Until then, the only issue is fan curiosity and we’ll just have to wait.

  106. Thanks, Sherena, duh! Just blind, I guess, lol.

Noooo problem. You’re welcome. Very late. lol

  107. Seems like he mentioned there would not be any surprises on his album? I thought he previously said that there will be some surprises on it. I really hope for some r&b influences in his album, not just a straight pop rock album. Nevertheless, I’m sure I will defintely like his album because those songwriters that he collaborated with are of my music preferences.

Maybe he’ll have a duet with Lil’ Rounds! That would be exciting.

  109. Seems like he mentioned there would not be any surprises on his album? I thought he previously said that there will be some surprises on it.

Yeah, that is weird. I guess the concept of the album has changed since he said that?

  110. I like (and own)Dan Wilson’s solo stuff, so I am happy to hear Kris is working with him. Should be a good collaboration.

  111. Kris has no idea what he is doing. He doesn’t even know what he was working on the night before? I do not think he has much imput into what his album will be like. Is he just going to sing other peoples tunes and not even try to make them his own? I will not buy his song or album. He sounds like “duh”.
