Kris Allen: Seven Songs From the Upcoming Album Revealed and Reviewed!

Lyndsey Parker of Yahoo Music got the chance to preview 7 new songs from Kris Allen’s upcoming self-titled album. (read it HERE)

She describes the songs as “Big, widescreen adult-alt-pop records reminiscent of VH1 house bands like Carolina Liar, Maroon 5, or Augustana, all full of huge hooky choruses ridiculously ready-made for radio.”

Exclusive: Listen to 'Never Com...
Exclusive: Listen to 'Never Coming Back' from Cassondra James' New EP

She believes the album is ” positively teeming with potential hits, ” and thinks 19 will have a difficult time picking the next single.

Of the 7 songs she heard, 5 were written or co-written by Kris. In fact, Kris had a hand in writing 9 of the album’s 12 tracks!

Here’s a little tidbit–Kris took vocal lessons after he appeared on Idol. Lyndsey reports that Kris is stretching his vocal range like never before on big, anthemic choruses.

Interestingly, there’s lots of songwriting from peeps who’ve written for females, like Duffy, Adele, Lilly, Kylie and Christina. But, Lyndsey promises “Dudes will dig it too.”

Reading through Lyndsey’s descriptions, I’m most excited to hear the power-poppy “Before We Come Undone”,   the ballad, “Bring it Back” (his London collab with Eg White),   “Let the Rain” (Kris’s song about compromising with TPTB) and, of course, “Red Guitar”, a song Kris wrote pre-Idol.

The funky “Can’t Stay Away” sounds promising.  Since I’m a fan of “Live Like We’re Dying” I expect to like the Script-penned “Written All Over My Face” too.

And I fully expect to be on the same page with Lyndsey regarding the mid-tempo ballad, “The Truth”. The song was Lyndsey’s least favorite. I’m not a big fan of mid-tempo ballads, especially if they’re written by anybody from Train.

After the jump, the songs and who wrote ’em.   Make sure to read Lyndsey’s full review HERE.

  • “Before We Come Undone”Kris Allen, Lindy Robbins (various Idols, Lisa Loeb, Faith Hill, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez), and Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, the Bird & The Bee, the Flaming Lips, Kylie Minogue) – an “Uptempo Power-pop rocker”
  • “Can’t Stay Away”Kris Allen with Mike Elizondo (a Dr. Dre protg who’s penned songs for Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Mary J. Blige, and 50 Cent, as well as alt-country chanteuse Shelby Lynne and singer-songstress Poe)   Elizondo co-wrote “Cowboy Casanova” with Carrie Underwood – Kris gets “Fresh and Funky…blue eyed soul”
  • “The Truth”Pat Monahan of Train and Pat Gadd…NOT co-written by Kris. Lindsey’s least favorite of the 7, a “mid-tempo ballad”
  • “Written All Over My Face” –   Penned by two Scriptmates along with Andrew Frampton (Natasha Bedingfield, Kylie, Delta Goodrem) and Steve Kipner (produced Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical” and Christina Aguilera’s “Genie In A Bottle” ).   Fans of “Live Like We’re Dying” will like this.
  • “Bring It Back” –   Kris Allen co-wrote it in London with Eg White (Adele, Duffy, James Morrison, and Sam Sparro)   “a ballad, hearkening back to the understated Kris America fell in love with…more heartland soft-rocking than brit-poppy)
  • “Let The Rain”Kris Allen with Tobias Karlsson (an affiliate of Carolina Liar) – The lyrics “grapple with Kris’s sometimes frustrating experience of…having to compromise with the powers that be at Jive and 19”.   Lindsey calls it one of the stronger songs. She calls it “single potential”.
  • “Red Guitar” –   Kris Allen – A song he wrote a year and a half ago! “…fits in perfectly with the other songs, following the album’s failsafe soft-verse/exploding-pop-chorus formula to a T.”

  1. I’m very interested to hear Red Guitar (especially given the story people were speculating might be behind it), Can’t Stay Away (just like the description) and Bring It Back (I like a lot of Eg White’s work, and again, the description).

Cool, this sounds really promising! :)

  2. I can’t wait for this album! It sounds like it’s going to be incredible from all the things that I’m hearing. I think the sales will be very good because as it has been stated before his fans are the ones who don’t buy music online so they will be able to go to their nearest music store and get a hard copy of the album. I fully expect BIG time sales for this album.

  3. Of the 5 songs she heard, 7 were co-written by Kris.

Mathematically interesting, but probably just a typo.

Don’t know what to think of Parker’s analysis. Hookie and widescreen could be good or the opposite. I should probably just not read stuff like this, but will I take my advise? Of course not.

  4. Based on Lyndsey’s descriptions of these songs — read-made for radio — I imagine that there must be a better choice for a Kris single than LLWD. Maybe 19/Jive will get smart and release a second single from the album. Well, a girl can hope!

  5. Actually 5 of the 8 she heard were written or co-written by Kris. Overall 9 of the 12 songs to make the album were written or co-written by Kris, which dispels any beliefs people had about Jive/19 not allowing him to hve much of a hand in the writing.

This is a really strong endorsement of Kris’ music by a person who was not a huge Kris fan during the AI run.

I’m hoping that “I Need to Know”, and the Joe King and Mat Kearney collaborations are 3 of the 4 album tracks that Lyndsey didn’t hear

(PS – she just posted a similar blog about the handful of songs off Adam’s album she got to listen to today)

  6. Q3

Are you going to the tailgate concert on Sunday before the Saints-Dolphins game? And if you do, will you being taking video????

  7. I’m thrilled with Lyndsey Parker’s review. She was not a Kris fangirl at all, so I consider this objective.
I can’t wait for her interview with Kris.
I think that LLWD is defintely one of the best winner singles yet.

I’m really hoping for the Daughtry/Elizondo colab and the Joe King and Matt Kearney songs to be 3 of the last 4.

Kris was just interviewed on ESPN radio a little while ago. The DJ loves Kris and its a cute interview.

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=M0VDHO2D

Also, Kris just tweeted. I believe this is Cale – the tshirt is a giveaway.

This is our fearless guitar player. http://twitpic.com/metcl

Latture was the name of Cale’s band.

  8. I can not wait until Nov.17!!! The album sounds amazing. Hurry -up and start touring Kris.

  9. I just have to say, as a HUGE fan of Augustana, this makes me SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE! If you are unfamiliar with them, check out ANY song on the Stars And Boulevards album.

  10. This is such exciting news! A lot of these names are completely new – Kris sure plays things close to the vest. So, no word yet on the collabs with Daughtry, Mat Kearney, Joe King, Dan Wilson, Alex Band, or Jon Foreman. Hmmm.

  11. Kris should have named his album Red Guitar – I love the sound of that.

  12. I am soooo excited to hear this album and, ehem, pleasantly surprised by the number of writes and co-writes!!! Yay!

I hope the fav song that Jim Cantiello is referring to is definitely on the album! I’m hoping it’s the co-write with Mat Kearney. I’m wondering if it’s “I Need to Know”.

  13. Didn’t Michael Slezak refer to “Before We Come Undone” as angsty?

  14. Yay!! I’m so happy to hear any piece of review/news on this CD, haha. He updated facebook saying it was finished today, then I come over here and see this. :D

I’m also a huge fan of Augustana, although I would recommend their Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt album first. ;)

And what’s wrong with Train, haha. I still love singing along with “Drops of Jupiter”.

  15. It’s hard to believe I could be more excited for Kris’ album but I think I am now. Lyndsey Parker is far from the greatest music critic. She is way to much of a fangirl and her fangirling gets in the way of her critical faculties (though she’s more of an Adam fan and has wavered on Kris). But she genuinely seemed to like Kris’ songs (no passive agressiveness in this review, thankfully) and her descriptions of them make me very happy. I think I’m most interested in Can’t Stay Away, Bring it Back, and Red Guitar. I also wish I knew what Jim Cantiello’s favorite song is which he said in a tweet was not reviewed by Lyndsey.

Is it too much to hope that Kris’ second single will be something at least co-written by him? (Even though I know this is 19Evil we’re speaking of?)

I’m thrilled with Lyndsey Parker’s review. She was not a Kris fangirl at all, so I consider this objective.

Eh, she’s been pretty fangirly after her initial bad reaction to Kris’s winning. Yes, she likes Adam more (and Allison as well) but she’s been pretty up on Kris as well for awhile now. Bottomline, I don’t consider her objective. And I say this when reading her reviews of Adam’s stuff either. I like her impressions what she has to say about them, but trusting it not to be fangirly? Not at this point for any of Kradison. Damn you Kradison! Why must you be so good ;)

  17. Cookcricket, I asked Jim whether or not his favorite is “I Need to Know” and Jim tweeted this:

jambajim FYI – I have not heard “I Need to Know.” Chew on THAT!
about 2 hours ago from web

  18. I love that Jive let Kris have so much control over the album. It really shows that they have confidence in him, and his ability as a writer. It would have been easy for Jive to just let one of their stable of writers pen the entire album, so that they could increase the amount of money that they would make off of it.

The best news about all of this is that Kris will be releasing an album that reflects who he is, that’s all that any artist can ask. I’m so happy for Kris.

  19. The best news about all of this is that Kris will be releasing an album that reflects who he is, that’s all that any artist can ask. I’m so happy for Kris.

This is ringing true for everyone they signed this year. 19 is finally learning to step back and allow creativity to take over.

  20. Is it too much to hope that Kris’ second single will be something at least co-written by him?

Speaking as a fan of David Cook, sadly, I’m going to have to go with “yes” on this one… if history is any indicator…

These sound promising. Wishing, hoping, wanting the best for Kris!

ETA: Could just be me, but hearing much of what’s said is oddly reminiscent of Cook’s debut too — stayed true… pop rock, power pop… 9 or so co-writes… but mostly, they threw him a single bone and allowed one solo write on the record. Even though not all his fans had hoped for from the album, I do hope Kris’ debut meets with the same success that Cook’s has — with better single selection. :-)

  21. SOOO EXCITED FOR THIS ALBUM!! really! we had not heard many things about it and this review by Lindsay who was not his biggest fan on the show to say the least is surprisingly very positive for his album.
Glad that “Red Guitar” made it. It gives him credibility as a singer/songwriter.

The ESPN interview has been posted on YT:
    part one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTp6WkZZLUs&feature=player_embedded

    part two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRpWMd-3h5w&feature=channel

  22. Squirrely “This is ringing true for everyone they signed this year. 19 is finally learning to step back and allow creativity to take over.”

I don’t think that applies to Danny Gokey though.. someone who doesn’t know much of country music/history but going the country route..

  23. Sooo… 12 songs including bonus tracks or 12 songs + bonus tracks?? Either way, I like knowing that the 4 mystery songs were all written/co-written by Kris. I have to admit, I’m curious to hear “The Truth”. One of the songs on my current short list of favorites is “Hey, Soul Sister” by Train.

  24. Jim C. DM’d someone who posts over on gossipcandy.com about what Kris song he keeps referring to as his favorites. Jim C. saidd that it was a song that he hasn’t heard anyone even talk about — which would rule out any of the collaborations Kris has mentioned.

    Hmm…interesting

  25. kt_cle, where did you see there were going to be bonus tracks on his album?

  26. I love that Jive let Kris have so much control over the album.

    That’s great news, musically. Promotion-wise, I’m a worry-wart — don’t bungle this people!!

  27. Mtlfan Just my wishful thinking… isn’t there always a ‘deluxe’ version of the cd that has bonus tracks? Or for that matter, different versions of ‘deluxe’ cds for different retailers?

  28. Kris offical site also redid Kris site today. Looking very good over there. I wonder what Jim’s secreat song is thou I hope it makes the album. Am so more excited today then I have been so far about his album. I can’t wait to hear Red Guitar.

  29. I’m thrilled to read this pre-album review and I’m really liking the descriptions.

Thanks for posting this MJ, and thanks girlygirl for the find.

9 of 12 songs written or co-written by Kris is great news. I want more leaks … like a musical leak. I can’t wait for the 17th.

  30. Cookcricket – yes, you remember correctly. Slezak described “Before We Come Undone” as angsty. My inner fangirl is squeeing at the thought of this…

These descriptions have me all kinds of excited. I love LLWD, so glad the 2nd Script song is along those lines. With all the writes and co-writes, the 2nd single has a very good chance to be one of Kris’ own. That’s nice.

I’m anxious to hear/read the lyrics to “Let The Rain”, as described by Lyndsey as about Kris’ rage against the machine.

Hell, I’m anxious for it all.

  31. BTW, the ESPN radio interview is awesome.

ETA: One of the ninjas at ONTD_AI found out Kris pre-recorded an interview with Z100 today that will be played on the station Monday, the day they announce the Madison Square Garden Jingle Bash lineup. You can connect the dots yourself…

  32. where are all the collaborations with the musicians we heard about over the summer? strange. i know there’s 4 songs left, but we have like 6 or 7 musician dudes that worked with right?

  33. kt_cle, .. wishing it too! I heard a deluxe version of the album only for Adam though. We’ll see

  34. LOL on Kris taking vocal lessons to improve his vocal range. I mean he won for god sakes and NOW he needs vocal lessons to improve his range. Wasn’t there an idol also ran this season who doesn’t need to increase his vocal range at all ; )
But it sounds like Kris’ album could be mainstream. Jive might actually want to try to market him. I personally don’t think they’ll bother, they haven’t done much to date. I mean you barely even see Live Like We’re dying marketed anywhere. Jive is letting the AI fans do all of the work and that’s not going to make Kris sell.

  35. One of the ninjas at ONTD_AI found out Kris pre-recorded an interview with Z100 today that will be played on the station Monday, the day they announce the Madison Square Garden Jingle Bash lineup. You can connect the dots yourself’ ¦

..flailing.. oh this is super awesome!!! ahhh end of November and December are going to be great :D … thanks Eileen99

  36. ESPN is a huge get…this great to get male fans and non ai watchers

  37. I’m very interested to hear Red Guitar (especially given the story people were speculating might be behind it

What were people saying it might be about?

I don’t think that applies to Danny Gokey though.. someone who doesn’t know much of country music/history but going the country route..

Danny doesn’t know what he wants to tell them what he wants. The others had their vision and looks like they are coming to life.

  39. smartalek,

I was hoping that Kris continue the vocal coaching after the show. Yes, all of them can benefit from that (maybe except Adam who started at 10). But Kris needs to improve technically with his vocals. I noticed that he has improved since May, it’s all very good. There are also exercises to be done to help increase the range (to some extent or to better use the existing upper and lower range) and power. I hope he keeps on with this

  40. I know some people online were talking about something to do with Kris’s dad. My mind is just nuts right now so I can’t think stright. It seems like his start to get alot of people followling him on twitter. I can’t remember what it was before bbut when I just checked it was just a little over 113.000

do you think they’re working on that “cry” in his voice? it’s just so goddang distracting to me. i can’t imagine that’s good vocal technique.

  42. Yay! I love this article. I may soften on my view of Lyndsey Parker, lol.

From the song descriptions it seems that Kris’ album will have a very fresh, contemporary sound. I was so happy to hear names like Maroon 5, Augustana, and Jimmy Eat World referenced as comparisons along with the expected Fray and Script.

I’m stoked about the number of cowrites that made the cut onto the disc too. And interested that a song about artist/management/label angst was allowed on, since usually they seem to make Idols say “oh, I got everything I wanted and was completely happy w/the process”, even if it turns out later — not so true.

Can’t wait to hear this album!!!

  43. do you think they’re working on that ‘cry’ in his voice?

    “Cry”?? explain plz

  44. This was a great review for Kris, and I liked the comparative info she gave use to help get a sense of the song. Very excited! Also, loved the ESPN interview!

  45. Well, we did get one new tidbit’ ¦iTunes pre-order starts on November 3.

kt_cle…. lol.. i must be too excited, I didn’t notice.. shame

  46. Great review of the songs. She can be a fangirl, so if she’d disliked it, that would not be a good sign.

Exciting to see that the album is coming together.

  47. Its so good to hear some news about the songs on Kris’s album! Thank you MJ for posting this!!
Lyndsay is surprisingly positive about most of these tracks which is great!!
I am so pleased that Kris will be collaborating on a lot of the songs .
Can’t wait to hear any snippets that might be released soon!!

  48. I’m really liking the idea of this pre-game concert. It’s exposing Kris to a whole new audience of people that may not be showing up to the Jingle Balls, Bosom Balls etc….. guy fans. I think the male Idols get labeled as ‘heartthrobs’ with screaming female fans. Expanding the fanbase to reach out to guys ‘on their turf’ as opposed to those being dragged to events by their girlfriends/wives is a good thing. Besides that, as a big a sports fan as Kris is, this has to be a cool opportunity for him.

  49. The interviewer was so into Kris and Pimping him. It seems like so many guys just fall over him. I love Adam and everything but it’s nice to hear something about Kris once in awhile thou. I wonder when his MV is coming out.

  50. I’m so glad I checked back today! I’m pleasantly surprised that Kris had a hand in writing so many of the songs on the album. Good for him. I can’t wait to hear the cd.

  51. Great review of his debut album. So happy that it is getting good reviews and that Kris has had a hand in the writing of the songs. He is a true artist in every sense of the word. It was interesting that he has been taking vocal lessons now. I imagine that has a lot to do with breath control and that kind of thing since the tone of his voice was always beautiful and his phrasing creative and impressive. It is great to read about Kris. Thanks for any tidbit you can share. This is more than a tidbit, but I am always excited to see his name in the headline of a blog. Seeing a picture is bonus, and having real news like here is fantastic.

  52. Great review for Kris’ music! It is exciting to see that people are getting to hear some of these songs.

  53. I imagine that has a lot to do with breath control and that kind of thing since the tone of his voice was always beautiful and his phrasing creative and impressive.

I thought I read it was originally for the tour. Ways to avoid vocal strain, etc. Now that he will be be doing more touring, it’s good stuff to learn.

  54. OK, I’m actually pretty darn excited to hear his album. Huh. This surprises me :) … I like Kris and many others from last season, but haven’t been like dying with anticipation. But now… want to get my hands on this album and give it a listen. I hope it does very well for him.

  55. I was hoping that Kris continue the vocal coaching after the show. Yes, all of them can benefit from that (maybe except Adam who started at 10).

Much like great athletes still need the guidance of trainers, even Adam would benefit from ongoing vocal coaching. People fall into bad habits over time; more objective eyes and ears help to correct potential problems before they become ingrained.

  56. Augustana is a great group. I would love to hear that collaboration. I still do not know why LLWD was chosen as the first single, when there sounds like there were so many other good tracks. Hrm. Well, Cook’s first single was LO, which was not one of my (or other fans) favorites. I think we’ll get a new single when the album drops unless LLWD picks up spins. I don’t dislike LLWD, but I would love to hear one of the songs Kris co-wrote.

  57. Much like great athletes still need the guidance of trainers, even Adam would benefit from ongoing vocal coaching. People fall into bad habits over time; more objective eyes and ears help to correct potential problems before they become ingrained.

When you stop learning, you’re done for. I think if Tiger Woods can use a coach, so can, well just about everyone else.

These reviews are making me hopeful that I’m going to enjoy Kris’s music. And good for him for getting so much writing/co-writing on his debut CD.

  58. Last I checked on Amazon it looks like Kris’s album preorder sales are going up. Someone correct me if I am wrong but wasn’t he out of the top 100?

Amazon.com Sales Rank: #87 in Music (See Bestsellers in Music)
Popular in these categories: (What’s this?)

    #44 in Music > Rock
    #84 in Music > Pop

  59. According to the website below Kris is scheduled for the following:
GMA 11/17, Regis & Kelly 11/18, taping Ellen 11/19, Conan to follow. Radio promo events all of December. Mgmt: Stirling McIlwaine/19 Ent.

    http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/vibe/vibe.cgi?rank5

I also think it is great that they are marketing on ESPN and the sports crowd. ESPN has Justin Timberlake on NFL countdown.

  60. you are my favorite musical swami, SpenserJ!

also, the reason to take vocal lessons is not just to “improve your range” — it’s to learn how to take care of the great voice you may have.

Many, many young singers blow out their voices if they don’t know how to breathe properly, take care of their throats, etc. Lo, way back in the Enlightenment Era, I worked for an otolaryngologist (try to say that five times fast!) to the stars. He had operated on Janis Joplin, Grace Slick and lots of other rockers when they go vocal nodes, and was always telling me that the louder the music, the more damage to the vocal chords.

and what artist can’t benefit from ongoing education? Paul Newman and others would drop in to study at the Actors Studio and other places, throughout their careers….

  61. tripp_ncwy,
Yup, it was at #117 on Amazon when I checked this afternoon. He’s moving up the itunes too. I think he was at #113 the last time I cecked earlier today.

  62. Last I checked on Amazon it looks like Kris’s album preorder sales are going up. Someone correct me if I am wrong but wasn’t he out of the top 100?

Yeah, it’s currently #28 on the Movers & Shakers list because it moved up from 152 to 87.

I don’t know if it means much though. So few albums are bought through Amazon that very small numbers can move an album up the chart quite a bit. Kris’ album has been moving all over the amazon charts honestly. Still, the timing makes me wonder if Lyndsay Parker’s rave review convinced some people to commit to the album.

  63. I’m so happy!!!! :) This thread is made of win. Good night all!!!

  64. ‘Let The Rain’ ‘“ Kris Allen with Tobias Karlsson (an affiliate of Carolina Liar)

Tobias Karlsson cowrote and coproduced 9 of the 12 songs on Carolina Liar’s album Coming to Terms, including their singles, I’m Not Over and Show Me What I’m Looking For. Max Martin also cowrote 1 of the songs, and coproduced most of the album. If I understand the story correctly, Chad Wolf, the lead singer/songwriter for Carolina Liar, was neighbors with Tobias in LA, and started writing songs with him. Tobias knew Max Martin. When Max Martin heard the first song or 2 that they’d written, he told them that if they could write a few more like that, he could help them make an album. Chad ended up with Max Martin in Sweden for a while, and formed Carolina Liar there. It’s made up of 5 Swedish guys and Chad Wolf. (Tobias isn’t one of them.)

Anyway, I love Carolina Liar (obviously, LOL!) and Maroon 5, so I’m thrilled to hear Kris compared to them. Hopefully the album will get put up for streaming on AOL or Yahoo a week before it’s release, so that we only have to wait 3 more weeks to hear it!

  65. I am so excited to hear more news about Kris’s album. I can not wait until November 17!! I had kind of gotten a Maroon 5 vibe from a couple of songs on his BNS album and am very excited to hear that there are some songs like this on his new album! I love the fact that he worked with so many different people. Today’s a great day to be a Kris fan!

  66. Is there anything that this reviewer didn’t gush over? The same was said about both Kris and Adam’s tracks.

Oh well…I still plan on getting Kris’ album anyway. Love his style.

  67. Much like great athletes still need the guidance of trainers, even Adam would benefit from ongoing vocal coaching. People fall into bad habits over time; more objective eyes and ears help to correct potential problems before they become ingrained.

    agree with you RemusL

colette, good point about learning how to take care of one’s voice. That’s quite vital

  68. I was actually thinking today that I hope Kris does a little r & b on his CD, and then I read about the Mike Elizondo track, Can’t Stay Away. He’s as good at singing soul as he is soft rock, and can switch back and forth with ease, it seems. This is another kind of crossover potential for him that I’ve never read much about.

  69. oooh, yes, more soul Kris!! Purty please!

Just remember how you blew Smokey Robinson away, babe…..

  70. wow!!!! super morning for me :) havent read the review yet cos i’m jumping up and down on my seat..should calm myself before i do…hehe

arrrghh how many more days for the Nov 17th? cant time and space reduce exponentially and considerably to make Nov 17th tomorrow? or better yet today!!!

ok will read and come back…

  71. This proves that the new Kris songs really aren’t a departure from the real Kris at all, and that he didn’t have to change who is he or what he’s about, or compromise all that much, in the end.

    from Lindsey’s review…..awwwww i’m almost teary eyed

  72. so if i get my math right…

    12 songs on the album
    9 songs co-written by kris
    1 song released
    7 songs reviewed by lindsey

so that leaves only one other song co-written by kris in the album.

and remember how he co-wrote with mat kearney. chris daughtry and jon foreman a few weeks ago! so does that mean only one of the songs of any of those 3 make it to the album? if so, i’m putting my money on jon foreman….

  73. SarahP,
No. Kris has written/co-written 9 out of 12 tracks. Out of the co-written/written ones, we have 5 now.
Kris didn’t write/co-write LLWD, WAOMF and THE TRUTH . So we have 4 songs left which Kris have co-written.

  74. But of the songs Lyndsey reviewed, Kris had only co-written 5. So that leaves 4 that he didn’t have a part in (and we know, OH do we know that he had no writing credits on LLWD).

  75. Yeah, of the 8 Lyndsey heard (including LLWD), Kris wrote/co-wrote 5. Which means he wrote/co-wrote all 4 of the ones to make the album that Lyndsey hasn’t heard

  76. Sounds great. I love Kris, looking forward to his album and his pal’s too. I think Kris will have a successful life-long career. Hope he stays open-minded and kind-hearted and has a lot of fun.

  77. and what artist can’t benefit from ongoing education?

and they do say that education is something to pursue from cradle to the grave….

and i btr go and check out carolina’s liar and augustana cos i’ve never heard of those bands…..

  78. Yeah, of the 8 Lyndsey heard (including LLWD), Kris wrote/co-wrote 5. Which means he wrote/co-wrote all 4 of the ones to make the album that Lyndsey hasn’t heard

thanks girlygirl..this obviously means i need to take math classes….

maybe the remaining four songs will be joe king’s, daughtry’s, mat’s and jon’s….or something solely written by kris which we havent heard about..or even the one jim was talking about….

and you know what! my November resolution is going to be ” Do not be bothered by numbers in itunes, amazon, at40 and billboard charts” cos kris was able to make his album his own and we kris fans will be getting what we deserve…a wonderful array of ‘kris-ified’ songs….

  79. Yeah, of the 8 Lyndsey heard (including LLWD), Kris wrote/co-wrote 5. Which means he wrote/co-wrote all 4 of the ones to make the album that Lyndsey hasn’t heard

So cool that all the rest of the songs will have been written or co-written by Kris. Wow. Of course David Cook co-wrote like 10 of his songs on his album, yes? and there was still a lot of compromise with the final product. I hope that Kris doesn’t have as much of that going on, though that song about “sometimes frustrating experience of’ ¦having to compromise with the powers that be at Jive and 19′ ³. sounds a bit…scary.

The ones that sound the best to me out of these, just by description and who they’re by are ‘Can’t Stay Away” and “Bring It Back.”

  80. Kris should have named his album Red Guitar ‘“ I love the sound of that.

You know, that would actually been cool. Picture them using the image that was on his single cover for his album cover, him sitting with his red guitar…

I am liking the maroon 5 comparisons, I think that would be a very good way for Kris to go.

so if i get my math right’ ¦

    12 songs on the album
    9 songs co-written by kris
    1 song released
    7 songs reviewed by lindsey

so that leaves only one other song co-written by kris in the album.

Just a minor correction with your math, bb:

    12 songs on the album
    9 songs co-written by Kris
3 songs written by others (LLWD, The Truth, Written All Over My Face)
    1 song released
    7 songs reviewed by Lyndsey
5 of which were written/co-written by Kris

…Leaves 4 more unknown songs that were co-written by him :)

ETA: Okay, nvm. Didn’t notice the comments where people explained it already XD

  82. Yay Kris! I really wan to hear this. 2 good reviews in one day! Wow.

  83. This review made me excited about his album even more. Aaaah!!!

In other news, Live Like We’re Dying is currently the most requested song on my favorite radio station here in the Philippines. Certainly bodes well with regards his sales here. :)

  84. Based on Lyndsey’s review, this album sounds very promising, especially since Lyndsey heard so many of the tracks. Can’t wait to hear some of the songs!

  85. Yeah carmine2008, I learnt it’s been at #1 at a radio station for 4days in a row. Thanks.

  86. This is really exciting! Lyndsey was far from Kris’s biggest fan during the show, and has tended to sprinkle even her praise of Kris with backhanded compliments and subtle digs. This extremely positive review from her is a really good sign, IMO. I am also really happy to hear about Kris getting so many writes/co-writes on the album because I think he showed such talent as a songwriter in BNS, and has most certainly greatly improved in that area, not to mention the improvement that can come from good collaboration with other artists. I’m particularly looking forward to Red Guitar, Let the Rain, Can’t Stay Away, and Bring it Back. And I’m tickled to death that Kris not only wrote a song about his frustrations with the label/management, but that he also got the label to put the song on his album. Kris may be understated in style, but he has always seemed to me to have a steely resolve.

As for the vocal coaching, I agree with what so many others have said. All singers can benefit from ongoing vocal coaching. Kris had never had any professional voice training. He obviously had the natural talent to win the show. It makes sense that even a small amount of coaching could help build on that to bring out a broader range and also help preserve his voice for the long haul. I remember Brian Mansfield commenting that one of the things he thought would serve Kris well in the industry was that, on the show, he really seemed to be a fast learner. Sounds like that is bearing fruit for his album.

My dream for the remaining songs, based on the limited amount of information we have, is: I Need To Know (a Kris solo write, I believe), one of the Joe King co-writes, the Mat Kearney co-write, and the Jon Foreman co-write. I’m a big fan of Daughtry as a person, and am especially grateful for the active role he took early on in helping Kris navigate this whole process, but I don’t really care whether his song makes the album.

(BTW, Jim Cantiello DM’d me to tell me that the secret song he’s been referring to is the one he believes was co-written by Kris and Mat Kearney, but that he hasn’t been able to confirm that.)

  87. Actually, I’m excited to hear ALL of them.
I wonder when we’ll hear about the other 4 songs. Seems that the Kris and Matt Kearny song is good. It would be cool if his collab with Daughtry makes it on the album

  88. I’m excited to read Lyndsey’s review of these songs! Red Guitar, Bring It Back, Let The Rain, and Can’t Stay Away are my most anticipated from the songs she talked about. I hope Kris keeps the soulfulness of his singing because IMO that’s what made so many of his performances popular.

The news of him taking voice lessons is great too! It’s important to stay in shape.

  89. I don’t know how to do the quotes thing, but
washpd, I agree with your sentiments here — My dream for the remaining songs, based on the limited amount of information we have, is: I Need To Know (a Kris solo write, I believe), one of the Joe King co-writes, the Mat Kearney co-write, and the Jon Foreman co-write.

I’m also hoping that one of these songs is a “so long, it’s been fun, but I have to go home now; I’m so sad to leave, the bus is waiting; listen to me being played as another new idol hopeful leaves season 9” song.

  90. Reading everyone else’s comments is making me even more excited. I’m just flat out excited by the titles of the songs without knowing what they’re about. They intrigue me.

Red Guitar and Let the Rain are the two I think I want to read and hear the lyrics for the most.

So we also get to hear or read an interview with Kris and Lyndsey sometime today? Yay!

(wondering why I was in moderation)

  91. I’m caught in the endless game of speculating on the method behind Jive’s madness… what was the rationale behind determining which songs Lyndsey Parker would hear and which ones would be secret? Are the songs she heard considered to be the strongest ones? Or are the strongest yet to come? Are the candidates for 2nd/3rd single in the mystery songs?

And while I’m speculating, will Kris and the band play new stuff in Miami? I don’t think the slower paced songs that he’s been playing work well in a tailgating environment. So if he doesn’t play new stuff, what ‘old stuff’ will he play?

Kris album info is like a drug… just when I think I am weaned off of it and can wait patiently, some tidbit comes to light, knocks me off the wagon, and sends me on a binge of info-seeking and speculation.

  92. today is happy day for me!

not only did i meet a lovely person whose become hopefully a life long friend, i also am still smiling in anticipation of the album!

how many more days? 26 days to go still? :(

  93. I just remembered the David Hodges co-write from very early on, so that’s another possibility. Kris’ brother also confirmed in an interview Kris had worked with Ryan Tedder, but no mention of that here. Almost all of the collabs we’ve heard about are not among the songs reviewed, so obviously some of those most-talked about collabs will be left off … or bonus tracks?

ETA: I need more coffee. After typing this, I remembered we knew there is a song listing David Hodges and Kris and one other person as co-writers on a song titled “Too Late To Run” that showed up in the BMI database quite some time ago, which would make the early collab timeline work.

  94. My dream for the remaining songs, based on the limited amount of information we have, is: I Need To Know (a Kris solo write, I believe), one of the Joe King co-writes, the Mat Kearney co-write, and the Jon Foreman co-write.

hear hear! or is it here here?

  95. Kris’ brother also confirmed in an interview Kris had worked with Ryan Tedder, but no mention of that here.

should we hope and pray that this does not make it to the album?

  96. what was the rationale behind determining which songs Lyndsey Parker would hear which ones would be secret? Are the songs she heard considered to be the strongest ones? Or are the strongest yet to come? Are the candidates for 2nd/3rd single in the mystery songs?

kt_cle, I do believe there is at least one very good song that was not heard by Lyndsey. My rationale is that there got to be some surprise when the album is released (Lyndsey could then write: oh! changing my mind,.. THIS one is definitly my favorite — talking about a not previously heard one).

  97. “should we hope and pray that this does not make it to the album?”

Tee hee, yes. Prayer circle time.

  98. I did a bit of research on his guitarist, Cale Mills. He was one of the 2 founders of alt. rock band Latture. Very good guitarist and pretty good songwriter too. But got to give Kris higher marks for songwriting .. he has stronger skills in creating melodies in my opinion

  99. I remembered we knew there is a song listing David Hodges and Kris and one other person as co-writers on a song titled ‘Too Late To Run’ that showed up in the BMI database quite some time ago, which would make the early collab timeline work.

I had forgotten about this. Wouldn’t the registration in the BMI database be a sure indicator that the track will be on the album?

Me too am excited to hear ALL or ANY of them! Just can’t wait for Nov. 17th.

  101. I had forgotten about this. Wouldn’t the registration in the BMI database be a sure indicator that the track will be on the album?

I don’t think so. That just means that whoever wrote it wanted to make sure it got registered. And Kris, while listed as one of the writers on it, is not listed as an artist (there is no artist listed). So, I don’t think we can go just by that.

  102. My bet is the stronger songs are the ones left. They are going to wait till the day of the relasing the snippets to let us know which ones the are.
I would love Daughtry’s, Alex Band, Mat Kearney and I need to know to make the album. I think Daughtry’s sond on the album could only pull some Daughtry fans for Kris, IMO.

ETA: I feel okay knowing that the rest of the songs are Kris’ co-writes because I trust his choices and know they’ll be good. I’m still banking on Daughtry’s song.
We are forgetting about NO NEED TO RUN which Kris also co-wrote.

  103. Wouldn’t the registration in the BMI database be a sure indicator that the track will be on the album?

Definitely not. Carrie Underwood’s BMI page contains 50 songs she’s cowritten. Only 10 of them are on any of her 3 albums and 2 of her cowrites on her upcoming album are not registered at BMI yet.

  104. Ooh Jive, don’t screw this up. Kris wasn’t my favorite AI performer ever or anything, but I really enjoyed a lot of his performances, and this album sounds like it could be the exact kind of music that I’d really like. C’mon… go Kris!!

  105. I also heard before that Kris was collaborating with Alex Band of the Calling, Dan Wilson of Semisonic, Claude Kelly and Salaam Remi. Rickey also mentioned Jared Cotter writing for Kris Allen.

Anyway, I love Lyndsey’s review. Joy, oh joy :)

  106. I think Rickey mentioned that Jared Cotter was going to submit a song, but it obviously didn’t make it because the remaining songs are all Kris writes or co-writes and Jared’s was his song alone. I’ve long thought the Claude Kelly session went nowhere. I still think there’s a possibility the Dan Wilson one will make it, even if only as a bonus track. He hasn’t really been mentioned since Kris wrote with him but he is a very strong songwriter and I think Kris mentioned at the time that they wrote a couple songs together.

  107. So excited for Kris. He is so talented. Really like his voice and his style. Just recently heard Wastin Time from Brand New Shoes and I LOVED it. Cheering you on Kris.

  108. I am so looking forward to this album! Augustana, Jimmy Eat World, Duffy, Adele, Carolina Liar, Mat Kearney, “older” Maroon 5, of course, The Script … what’s not to love? Okay, Train hasn’t been on my radar since Drops of Jupiter, and I’m not digging the new Soul sister song, or whatever it’s called, but I bet Kris can work the kinks out of the song. I mean that’s if there really are any. Got to hear it first.

My musical tastes are fairly eclectic, but Kris’s particular genre: alt/pop/rock is clearly my favorite. I’m really happy about this and I’ll say it again — musically, this year, TPTB have hit the motherlode.

  109. You know, I just realized something.

If Lyndsey is correct that there are 12 tracks on the album and Kris wrote/co-wrote nine of them, we have confirmation that “No Boundaries” will not appear on this CD (unless it is a bonus track or some such thing).

We know the names of the 3 songs that Kris didn’t write (LLWD, “The Truth” and ‘Written All Over My Face’ ) and we know he didn’t write “No Boundaries”.

    Yay!

    I hope I didn’t jinx it.

  110. Kirsten, did you have to say that out loud? (but, I think you’re right!!)…. I thought the same thing. The sooner that thing is erased from the memory banks, the better.

Although, I just saw the Nobo photo shot of Kris on the Sacramento Jingle Bell promotional poster (ARGHH). DNW to see that picture anymore!

  111. Kirsten, you ought to be right. And that would be so strange to have NoBo as a bonus track….lol

there was an interview right after he changed NoBo for ATTID where he said that NoBo has run out his usefulness (might not be good English here, sorry…). Also it was not fitting with the tour set… no brainer that it won’t fit the album track list too.

  112. Although, I just saw the Nobo photo shot of Kris on the Sacramento Jingle Bell promotional poster (ARGHH). DNW to see that picture anymore!

Eileen, I actually like that Nobo photo.

Speaking of Sacramento Jingle Ball, todays’ the presale. I just bought front 4th row tickets today. Early christmas gift for myself and family. I am “excite” to hear the Kris’ new songs from the album live. WOOHOO!!!

  113. for some reason whenever i read the title “Written all over my face” i keep singing Rehab by Rihanna….

  114. Does anyone know if Kris will be singing some of the songs from the album at the various Jingle Balls?

happygolucky, grats on getting tickets to the Sacramento show. I look forward to hear your reports back on it.

  115. I wonder when the interview well be up from Lyndsey with Kris. I just can’t wait until the 17th. I so bad want to hear Red Guitar, Bring it back,Let the rain, And isn’t I love LLWD Am sure excited for Written all over my face,Bring it back to tell the truth all 7 sound so great. And then 4 more that we don’t know nothing about yet. Besides were hoping the one Jim is talking about makes the cut. And since I bought the i-tune pass i’ll probably take a nap earlier in the day and then stay up after I download it and listen like crazy to it. And there not coming to get are stuff until the 18 and 19. The only bad thing is I’ll miss him on the shows his going on to.

  116. And since I bought the i-tune pass i’ll probably take a nap earlier in the day and then stay up after I download it and listen like crazy to it

Just to mess with your plan… LLWD was actually up on iTunes at about 11PM (Eastern) the night before the official release date. I don’t know if the iTunes pass download will be ready right away, or if we’ll have to wait for the morning – but there will be a lot of high-strung Kris fans (me among them) if they can’t get to the music the minute it is available to the rest of the buying public :D

  117. I so agree with you kt_cle. And I’ll probably listen to it over and over again on are moving day. It well be a pretty long trip. I live in Fort Campbell,Ky right now and moving to Fort Drum NY. Well it won’t be that long because I just forget were going to my mom’s for a few days and we’re leaving from there. But me do have 3 kids so it will still be pretty long.

  118. Happy: Good for you, I am ~excite also. I actually sent my daughter a text last night seeing if she wanted me to pick her up at college on my 12-hour road trip to Sacramento to see Kris! She’s totally down for a whirlwind road trip odyssey, so maybe we’ll see you there, although I’m hoping for a Jingle Bell concert a little closer to home …

  119. Boy, who would have known that being a dedicated Kris fan would take one a such a roller coaster ride. I have been bummed over the i tunes sales, but I am so psyched today after reading the review for the tracks. I can hardly wait to get the CD in my hands. Hopefully it is everything that I dream it will be.

  120. Yay Kris! I really wan to hear this. 2 good reviews in one day! Wow.

Was there a second review somewhere?

  121. Delurk ALert!!

I had to! had to come out from hiding for this post!
This entire post and comments just made of win win win!
And MJ great work… this post has been clear of any bloodshed or name calling!! (Not Jinxing!) I’m just so pleased and soo proud! of Kris Allen!

Red Guitar! Bring It Back! Can’t Stay Away!
Also soooo need ‘I need to know’, and Collabs with Mat Kearney & Daughtry!!!

The review is just sooo good esp from someone who’s not Fan Girly about Kris (though she has grown to like him, inspite of herself.)

You know, I think Kris along with Jive/19 — all this while, they’ve been working on making a sucessful album instead of JUST a SUPERHIT Single…

Kris might seem too slight or too normal at first glance — but that’s just at first. He’s the kind of artist that grows on … It’s what happened on idol — I’m thinking, the same pattern will follow with this album and his career.

It’s about longevity, people!! Sucessful Album is better than 1 sucessful single. And looks like majority of Kris Allen PR appearances have been saved for promoting his ALBUM!

  122. Also….. Mike Elizondo, I think, I might be totally wrong, but wasn’t he there with Kris and Daughtry in LA for their writing session?

Are we sure there’s a seperate Allen + Daughtry collab?!
Maybe Daughtry just introduced the two of them, maybe he’s not really part of the collab?

Though I know Daughtry did mention on his twitter that he did work with Kris on a track…. Colour me confused (My own doing!)

  123. Also’ ¦.. Mike Elizondo, I think, I might be totally wrong, but wasn’t he there with Kris and Daughtry in LA for their writing session?

yep he’s the one..i’m too lazy to find the link but i remember MJ posted some months back a photo of all of them

and welcome seeker (you dont play Quidditch by any chance do you?)

  124. Hey Cookcricket (IKR!)
& SarahP! (Nope, I’m not after Golden Snitches but luvs HP!– both of them!)

    Here the link BTW:
    http://mjsbigblog.com/kris-allen-and-chris-daughtry-together-in-the-studio.htm

Yeah figured it’s the same guy — that’s why I was wondering, if they came up with two songs from that session (1 with Mike & 1 with Daughtry) or just ‘Can’t Stay Away’.

Coz I don’t think Kris had more sessions with either of them after the one in LA.

    Has He? Anyone?

  125. Don’t have time to read the comments (and I know probably nobody’s reading this anyway because there’s a lot of newer stuff) but I just have to say: AHHH this made me so excited!! I’m glad Kris has so many writing credits, too.

  126. Yeah I keep coming back and check once in awhile too. And still haven’t came down from my high. And only got a few hours of sleep last night.

  127. I’m checked back a few times too! Looks like a new interview was put up!

  128. I’m stil so excited! And now a 15 min interview – wow is all I can say right now.
