reveals to Jim Cantiello of MTV News, the reason some songs were left off of his post-Idol debut, Kris Allen:

Speaking of missing acoustic songs, Allen his cut collaboration with singer/songwriter Mat Kearney, “Top of the World.” “It had like a dance beat to it … but not in a bad way, ” Allen said. “I thought it was great. I think the song’s awesome. You’ll hear the song sometime.”

Aside from Kearney, the “Idol” alum worked with Kevin Rudolf on the track “Better Than That, ” which also didn’t make the album. Allen described Rudolf as a “super cool guy” and talked about how he forged a connection with the songwriter. “It was kind of funny, man, because he worked a lot with Lifehouse on their new album, ” Allen said. “Lifehouse and Kevin Rudolf, they actually wrote a song for me. But it just didn’t end up on the album.” Will the track ever see the day of light? “I don’t know, ” he said.

The album might have been called, Translate Your Soul, but cooler heads prevailed. Kris is happy with a self titled disc. Plus, Kris promises acoustic numbers in the future–maybe on an EP.

  1. I kind of like the title. But honestly, I have dreadful taste. So it’s probably best he went with his name. :-)

  2. OMG this title made me LOL and I am so glad Kris was in his right mind and decided that this title was too lulz-worthy to go with.

  3. I kinda like “Translate Your Soul.” I’d probably like anything more exciting than “insert idol here” with “insert idol here.” Is it wrong of me to think that maybe the Mat Kearney song got a bit more scrutiny because Mat fairly dissed idol?

On 2nd thought, I hate the title “For Your Entertainment” but maybe because it unfortunately doesn’t entertain me.

  4. IDK, I like “Translate Your Soul” ‘“ a lot. It’s lyrical, thought-provoking and different. Much prefer it to the generic go-to self title.

  5. yea “translate your soul” would have been great fodder for Vote for the Worst
    fodder: vocab word lol

  6. i don’t think i have ever liked an album that was self-titled. it just seems lazy to me, and way too predictable. like last year. “david cook: david cook.” that tells me nothing about what the album is going to be like before i buy it.

  7. Except the AI contestants have to try and take advantage of any name recognition they may have, so it makes sense to self title the album.

  8. Luckily that the cheesy title is not used. I still think a self-titled album is the best choice as it really gets his name out to the non-AI fans.

  9. Who came up with that silly title? That title would have been embarrassing! I’m glad “cooler heads prevealed”!

  10. I actually kind of like the title. It’s a little too much for a first album, though.

lol, maybe ‘soul translation’ ? whatever

Oh, HELL no, that sounds like a Michael Bolton album, yuck!

  12. For what it’s worth, Kris never said that “Translate Your Soul” was the original title of the album. He said that was one of the names they were kicking around as an idea. Whoever writes up the articles for MTV based on the interviews apparently likes to take liberties with what people actually say.

At any rate, I think “Kris Allen” was a way better idea.

  13. @washpd: Good point. I think the title of this article is misleading. It was “one” of the contenders, it wasn’t the original title. Heck, it could have been mentioned on that interview because it was one of the worst titles they came up with or were playing around with.

  14. I think that album title is a little pretentious for a debut cd, so I’m glad he didn’t use it. He sure is a sweetie pie though.

  15. Translate Your Soul? LOL…thank goodness they went the self-titled route.

  16. Everytime I see kris in an interview, I love him more. And Jim and he like each other a lot-making it more fun. Kris has the talent to be a life long success and he shall be.

  17. We have heard so many things about the Mat Kearney song . I can’t take it any more, I just want to hear it whether it’s good or bad (I have faith in Kris’s taste so I don’t worry). I hope and I wish that we won’t have to wait for a long time.

Yes, I think that’s true. It just reminds me of the other MTV article with the title “Kris Allen’s Secret Songwriting Weapon? Adam Lambert” just because Kris has said that he exchanges ideas with Adam about their songs. Whatever. At least they have the video with the interview so everyone can hear what Kris meant, it’s just that the title gives the first good or bad impression.

I found on ONTD_AI an interview of Kris with Cosmo Radio. He is relaxed anfd funny!
    Cool stuff:
what did he intend to ask J.Meyer yesterday after his concert?
what song he may cover on his tour? (again, I’m surprised with his choice)
is he surprised that many people ask him about Katy?
He also talks about Cale (Mr. Arkansas, lol) a little about Anoop and Matt, thanksgiving, twilight(?!). http://www.upload-mp3.com/files/121172_5kltc/cosmo%20interview.mp3 Enjoy!

Also pictures of Kris at the 8th annual Celebration of Dreams (where he was asked to do the moonwalk, but we never got any video from that event): http://www.kris-pics.net/v/photos/other/dreamfoundation/

    Yeah, exactly, Washpd.

This wasn’t going to be the title of the album. It was one title they supposedly were kicking around, and imo I think he mentioned it just because it was the most absurd.

So they were seriously considering that as the title? I’m curious what other options were…

Thanks for this link! Super chatty by Kris standards, lol. I enjoyed that interview.

  21. Hey that’s kind of a cool title. Cheesy, but I like it. Self titled was probably the best choice in the end though.

That’s the thing, I don’t think they were serious. Kris sort of says “Translate Your Soul” in a funny way, like he was embarrassed by it. Maybe he remembered it because it was the most funny-sounding? Or at least this is how I perceived it when I was watching the interview.

  23. Maybe he remembered it because it was the most funny-sounding? Or at least this is how I perceived it when I was watching the interview

yes, Kris would have done that for me too

  24. mmk28,

thanks for the pictures at the 8th annual Celebration of Dreams. Quite a lot of good pictures.

thanks also for the interview. That was a good one!!! wow electric field of mgmt… that’s quite surprising and i would expect quite a rearrangment of the song.

  25. mmk28: It just reminds me of the other MTV article with the title ‘Kris Allen’s Secret Songwriting Weapon? Adam Lambert’

That article irked me too because Kris’s fans knew he was a songwriter, and Adam had admitted that he had never written much. Grrr…!

Can’t remember who posted, but thanks for the video link and the pics…I’ll check them out tomorrow.

  26. That article irked me too because Kris’s fans knew he was a songwriter, and Adam had admitted that he had never written much. Grrr’ ¦!

    Hi Diane,

It irked me too!!! Both had songwriting experience. And they said that they had helped each other out with songs on their albums … meaning, I think, that they had bounced ideas off of one another … Except that the press slanted it to make it sound like Adam had been helping Kris. Inexcusable and, as an Adam fan, I felt embarrassed about it. Not Adam’s fault but so, so unfair. And that kind of thing seemed to be happening all summer long. I’m a fan of Kris and his music too but … well, let’s just say that he has an extra deep store of patience. I admire him for it but I really wish that he didn’t need to use it so often. I mean seriously he’s put up with a hell of a lot of shit, especially from bad journalists, this past few months.

  27. Jim always does better bringing out the best in Kris in interviews but Kris does seem really tired.

That was a scary potential title. I was quite surprised there wasn’t at least one acoustic track on the album. Nice to hear something about other tracks. We heard so much about collaborators for the other guy and next to nothing about Kris’ album during the writing process.

About “perfecting” the tracks that are on the album, I wish LLWD got another pass since it’s already sounds better mixed when played live as on Regis & Kelly.

  28. Thanks for the link MTLFAN, indeed the article is favourable but this part :
‘Red Guitar,’ is a particular favorite track of mine. Written solely by Kris, it tells a story not of a guitar, but rather, of someone for which he never thought he could fall.

This part made me go, ‘QUOI!?’

“Translate You Soul” so cheesy! Wow, would love know more titles they’d come up with! And did Jim say “Tobias UK”?! LOL Guess he heard wrong and Kris corrected him with “T Y S”.

LOL at Kris’ expression when he says the name! ‘Kris Allen’ just makes sense, like he said, this album is about introducing himself as an artist.

And awww at Kris Allen, the beatboxer, doing the beats for the Mat Kearney song. That waz sooo cute!

  29. ‘Translate You Soul’ so cheesy! Wow, would love know more titles they’d come up with! And did Jim say ‘Tobias UK’ ?! LOL Guess he heard wrong and Kris corrected him with ‘T Y S’ .

Yeah, it’s cheesy. But thinking of it as a possible title is so Kris, to me. Because, really, I think this is what he feels when he’s doing music. … Well, glad they didn’t choose it. But, very cute and endearing and providing additional insight into Kris, to me, anyway.

  30. Jim said “Tobias Funke”. He’s an Arrested Development fan! :)

Jim said ‘Tobias Funke’ . He’s an Arrested Development fan!

You’re right! :) Awww I miss AD myself!! I’d just caught the ‘Tobias’ part, added “UK” for my own enjoyment! Yes, I’m silly that way.

& Translate Your Soul – “I think this is what he feels when he’s doing music”
IA Lucy, if you look at it this way, the title does make sense… It takes me to “TMYFML” and the way he sings that song. But this doesn’t change the fact that the Title is toooo cheesy and like you, I’m glad they didn’t choose it.

  32. The title of this article is beyond misleading. Jim asked Kris what were some of the bad titles he rejected. Kris asked his off screen handler (publicist?) who evidently reminded him of this one.

Kris in previous interviews had said the people were throwing titles at him and they just ‘didn’t get it’. That is why he put his foot down and said, ‘We’ll just call it Kris Allen’.

Add me to the list of people who were furious that AL was getting the credit for Kris’ song choices and arrangements. That’s like me showing someone a painting and asking, ‘What do you think of this?’ and if they say ‘I like it’ they are immediately the artist who did the work.

  33. koshka-That’s not the same critic. It’s one blogger reviewing each one. And the guy who reviewed Kris’s album isn’t even a regular. Where was Ann Powers when you needed her?

Personally I think he took off two stars because Kris had the audacity to win. That second paragraph is certainly strong evidence towards that.

  34. Thanks for the links to the Access Hollywood review and the cosmo radio interview. I needed those.

  35. Agreed cilady. The only thing the LA Times review proves is that the reviewer LACKS perspective. He obviously can’t get over the fact that Kris won.
