Listen to Kimberly Caldwell’s new single, the mid-tempo rocker, “Mess of You” at her MySpace page.

  • Listen to “Mess of You” HERE.

Kimberley’s debut album, “Without Regret” is set to be released in April 2010.

The song sounds radio-ready to me.   What do you think?

  1. She sounds so different! It’s an okay tune. A little generic and Cook-ish.

  2. Yeah, her voice is so deep on this track. But she may have luck with it.

  3. I can’t get past the skeery picture, lol. She looks like she wants to eat someone. It’s an ok song, I think, I could hear it being on the radio, just nothing exciting.

  4. She sounds like she should be a singer with a band and not a solo act. Her voice, alone, is not enough to sell an album. I don’t know about a single.

  5. Her voice sounds like a cross between Pink and Cher now. I don’t remember it being like that before.

The song is pretty catchy–Open House Party would play something like this. It’s a solid effort, but I don’t know if she’ll have much success with it. I wish her luck, though.

  6. I LOVE the cover art. Totally rocks and is attention getting. And I like her voice on the song a lot. But the song itself is pretty bland and meh. It has a Daughtry type feel to it and I think there’s too much of that type of generic rock already out there (any is too much for me and we’ve got way more than that). She really needs a more musically adverturous tune to live up to the artwork.

  7. yeah, it isn’t bad at all. Nice tune. And she has a distinctive voice. I wonder if she’ll be on idol this year. The girl deserves, after working for it for so many years.

  8. I thought it was Cook-ish, too :) They would have had such gruff-voiced children!

  9. I may be in the minority, again, but I don’t think her voice is anything to write home about. See there are singers that can sing, then there are singers that can SANG. She can sing but her voice is kinda dull and passe to me. Too many women are trying to project this tough rock image but a lot of them just aren’t rockers. I am sure there will be obligatory comparisons to Pink, but why try and sound like someone else just to get on the radio? The song chorus is very bland. Just what my ears hear.

  10. I really like her voice. The song is ok. I wish her well with her album.

  11. I agree jinxx315. Her range is nothing like Pink’s or Cook’s. It’s just not appealing to me. Singers like Melissa Etheridge, Bonnie Raitt, Pink…they all have that nice texture but with RANGE. KC just does not have that…or she is holding out on us perhaps? I don’t know.

I assumed it was the song holding her back. But you all would know more than me about that.S8 was the first year I watched idol and it seemed that most the peeps that got any distance on the show had either a halfway decent range or some other vocal uniqueness. There are exceptions of course, but I figured I’d give her the benefit of the doubt that the problem was the material not being adventurous rather than her not being able to sing anything more interesting.

  13. then there are singers that can SANG

And where do you find them on pop radio?

Kim’s voice is fine. The song is okay. I am just wondering about how she will be promoted. Allison, straight off idol releases a pretty good cd, and what happens? So far not much, so what will happen with Kim, several years past her idol days? I might buy it, but then I’ve always liked her….

  14. It’s ok. I liked the last one you posted of hers better, I think. I don’t really remember it but I remember that I thought it was good. It was a video of her in a parking lot, it looked like. (It will be embarrassing if it was the same song! I don’t think it was though).

  15. It’s an okay tune. A little generic and Cook-ish.

My thoughts exactly! It’s very post-grunge pop-rock. I couldn’t get into the song but it’s the right style for Kim. I liked the other 2 songs that she previewed in that showcase better.

I don’t expect this will do anything on the radio. But their best chance at getting attention to Kim’s album is using the internet and riding off any AI publicity they can on TV and maybe radio if Kim can use the AI hook to get interviews.

I don’t think it’s likely that I’ll be buying her album but I do give respect to AIers who work hard, grow, and find themselves artistically. Kimberly seems like she might’ve done that so good for her.

  16. It’s an okay tune. A little generic and Cook-ish.

It is Cook-ish. I actually don’t get the point of the song. “I’ll make a mess of you . . . the Hell I put you through . . . Trust me.” She will make a mess of him because of the Hell she put him through in the past??? Also, unless she’s singing quietly it’s very hard to understand the lyrics, which makes it hard to get hooked on the song.

I think she has an interesting voice. It is decent, but not outstanding. But with the right song(s) it doesn’t have to be outstanding. For her to have a hit, she needs a song that everyone on earth wants to sing along to in the car. And this ain’t that.

  17. I like Kim, and I really wanted to like this, but the song is generic and her voice sounds horrible, like what Kelly Clarkson would sound like if she were 90 years old and had smoked 2 packs a day for decades. I also don’t get the comparisons to Cook. He has a beautiful tone, she has no tone at all. The only comparison I can see making sense at all is that Come Back to Me is also a generic pop rock song, but this song sounds much more like a Kelly or Pink song to me. Anyway, I don’t think I’ll be buying her music if the whole album sounds like this. :(

  18. OK, so it’s not just that I hate the shlocky cover art, and find her unbearable on TV, it’s also because I listened and really believe this: she’s a decent bar singer, but there is nothing in the music or the delivery that is any way distinctive or interesting to me. “Generic” — you nailed it, Cathy MK.

  19. I also don’t get the comparisons to Cook.

She doesn’t sound like David Cook. The song structure is like some of the songs he does. Tender verse with big loud, possibly yelling, chorus.

  20. That low voice is a bit offputting because it really doesn’t sound like her. Song’s OK though.

That description applies to a lot of rock goups, especially the pop-rock female artists. Even Adam’s WWFM fits that description. There are a few similarities with Cook’s CBTM but that song wasn’t written by Cook.

  21. They would have had such gruff-voiced children!

LOL. Good observation. Her voice was always low and gruff, but I haven’t listened to this video yet (having software issues). Maybe they accentuated the gruffness more.

She was always slightly tone-deaf on Idol, and really no better than kareoke, but her looks and ambition got her as far as she got. She has a very limited range. Her determination to make it as a singer is misguided, imo. She’s just not good enough as a singer. More of a tv personality/host/mc. I never cared for her personality much either, but today I admire her determination (when she’s not trying to be a singer that is).

  22. They would have had such gruff-voiced children!

Baahaha. I like her, her personality, and only some parts of her voice, based on what I hear here. VERY low and gruff indeed. It sounds WAY lower than DC’s LOL. Anyway, wish her luck!
