As if Kelly Clarkson would get a spring reprieve with The Voice off the air until Fall 2022. The show taking the veteran singing show’s spring slot has tapped the American Idol OG winner and afternoon talk show host for their new competition series, American Song Contest. Instead of coaching, as she does on The Voice, Kelly will co-host the series with rapper and TV personality, Snoop Dogg.
NBC delayed the American Song Contest premier four weeks due to Omicron concerns. Additionally, the America’s Got Talent: XTreme, which has been beset with problems, took the American Song Contest’s original start date. NBC announced the show last spring, but took it’s time announcing the cast, or really much information about the show at all. Will there be a judges panel? NBC didn’t even save a spot during it’s TCA tour day to promote the new show.
Keep an eye on the news. Snoop has recently sued for sexual assault. He has vigorously denied the charges.
American Song Contest Premieres on March 21
The all-live series will premiere on Monday, March 21 from 8-10 p.m. ET/PT from the NBCUniversal lot. The series will run for eight weeks on Monday nights with the Grand Final scheduled for May 9.
Snoop Dogg said, “I am honored to host American Song Contest alongside my lil sis Kelly Clarkson, aka Miss Texas.”
Kelly added, “I have been a fan and love the concept of Eurovision and am thrilled to bring the musical phenomenon to America. I’m so excited to work with Snoop and can’t wait to see every state and territory represented by artists singing their own songs.”
Kelly and Snoop joined forces on The Voice
Snoop served as a Mega Mentor for The Voice season 20 in 2021. Snoop performed during the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show in Englewood, Calif. (Feb 13) with Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar and Eminem. Kelly has served as a coach on the series since season 14 in 2018. Additionally, she has won several Emmys for her NBC syndicated talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show.
The Eurovision Song Contest, organized for 65 years by the European Broadcasting Union and watched by 200 million viewers annually, the musical spectacular combines the competitive spirit of rooting for your favorite sports team with the joy of watching a live performance of an original song.
Live performances from every state and territory in America to find the Best Hit Song
American Song Contest will feature live new music performances that represent all 50 states, including five U.S. territories and our nation’s capital. The contestants representing each state/territory will compete to win the country’s vote for the best hit song.
A talented solo artist, duo or a band will represent each location and perform a new original song, celebrating the depth and variety of different styles and genres across America. The live competition consists of three rounds as the artists compete in a series of Qualifying Rounds, followed by the Semi-Finals and the ultimate Grand Final where one state or territory will emerge victorious.
The show is from the producers of the famed and long running European Song Contest as well as The Voice team.
NBC will name the 56 artists on a later date.

“C’MON NBC I’m ON ALL YOUR SHOWS” says Kelly. AGT host Terry Crews featured in the funny bit as well.
