American Idol OG winner Kelly Clarkson may enter the talk show realm. According to Broadcasting and Cable, NBC is shooting a talk show pilot with The Voice coach that would potentially be shopped for a fall 2019 debut.
Currently, Kelly has a talent deal with NBC Entertainment, which now oversees NBCUniversal Television Distribution, including all first-run development for TV stations. The show could potentially be offered to TV stations in syndication or it could air on another platform or in combination.
Interestingly, a major time slot is opening up as NBCU’s Harry starring former American Idol judge Harry Connick Jr. is ending its two season run this month.
Daytime talk is a pretty crowded field and has a high failure rate. For instance, according to B&C, Warner Bros.’ first-run division, Telepictures, has shot a pilot with RuPaul of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Still, Kelly’s winning personality could work hosting a talk show. She’d need a little coaching, however. On The Voice, she has a tendency to interrupt and talk over folks. But the stuff that can’t be learned–likeability and charisma–Kelly has in abundance.
Kelly and her husband Brandon Blackstock just bought a house in Los Angeles. I suspected she’d become a regular on The Voice a la Blake and Adam. But the promise of a talk show could have played a part in that decision as well.
