American Idol winner Just Sam recently performed covers of Carole King’s “You Got a Friend” and a song that King penned, “Up on the Roof.” The performances served as backdrop for the latest Michael Kors fashion show.
Unable to show off his spring collection via the usual NYC runway extravaganza due to COVID-19 restrictions, the designer produced a video featuring Just Sam performing, as models walked through a beautiful New York City community garden.

The emotion when I hear Sam perform is just so genuine
In a behind the scenes clip, Kors shares that he discovered the young singer when he and his husband, holed up due to the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging New York last spring, began watching American Idol.
“The first time we saw Just Sam we looked at each other like–oh my God, there is something boiling up through them. That is to me, this joy and talent was so incredible and…we looked at each other and said ‘Somehow we need to work together with Just Sam.'” Kors added, “The emotion when I hear Sam perform is so genuine.”
Just Sam chats with the legendary Bette Midler over being New Yorkers
Also in the clip, Bette Midler chats about being an investor in the community garden where the fashion show takes place. Additionally, the legendary singer and actress chatted with Just Sam about her upcoming performance. Bette noted that King is a native New Yorker just like Just Sam–a fact the young singer did not previously know. “I’m really thrilled that [Kors] chose these songs for you,” Bette said.
