Here’s a first look at American Idol season 3 alum and The Voice coach Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin in the upcoming biopic Respect. Following the rise of Aretha Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom, Respect is the true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice.

Directed by Liesl Tommy and written by Tracey Scott Wilson, Respect’s co-stars include Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Marc Maron, Tituss Burgess, Saycon Sengbloh, Hailey Kilgore, Tate Donovan, Heather Headley, Skye Dakota Turner, and Mary J. Blige.

Watch Jennifer Hudson belt out the title song “Respect” as Aretha Franklin in the new biopic.

Jennifer Hudson visits her former The Voice coach on The Kelly Clarkson Show. JHud went from singing Aretha Franklin songs on American Idol to being chosen by the Queen of Soul herself to play her in an upcoming biopic, and she still can’t believe it! Kelly also surprises Jennifer with $150,000 worth of LEGO toys donated to the Julian D. King Gift Foundation, which Jennifer started in honor of her late nephew.

She isn’t the first “Cats” cast member to grace our stage, but Jennifer Hudson is the first to successfully tell Stephen Colbert what the heck this movie is about. Also, Jennifer and Stephen sing O Holy Night!
