The soundtrack to the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect starring Jennifer Hudson, available for pre-order is out on August 13 the day the film is released. And along with the pre-order comes the American Idol alum’s version of “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman” available to stream or download.
It’s worth noting that the rendition of the song, written by Carole King, Gerry Goffin, and Jerry Wexler, is from the movie, which means that Jennifer DOES NOT make it her own. On the contrary, she channels Aretha, but without mimicking her straight up. A version by Jennifer would have more big notes and vocal runs. She saves the glory notes for the end of the song, which is how soul singers approached performing back in the 60s.

Oprah asked Jennifer how she was able to craft her portrayal of Aretha Franklin “the person” as a separate identity from “the icon.” Jennifer responded that it was a different experience for her, because the eras of the two singers are so different. “It took a while to learn how she took up space” said Jennifer.
