JC Chasez – Build Some Love

It sounds like a Ryan Tedder knock-off, and since it’s been reported that Tedder is writing for Kris’s album, no need for imitations, right? Heh. There’s no word whether Kris recorded “Build Some Love” for his new album, set to be released on November 17.

What do you think? Do you like?

  1. It does have a Kris Vibe. (the guy singing even sounds a little like Kris in the verse sections…Disclaimer: I said a little like Kris) The song has potential. The problem I have with it is in the Demo the chorus has too much of a boy band sound. I think if Kris took it and changed the chorus to have a rock edge it could do well for him. IMHO

  2. I listened to the whole 3:38 second clip — and the best part was the dead air at the end.

Oh, I hope this isn’t on the album. And MJ you nailed it — pseudo Ryan Tedder. If it is, I hope they fix the lyrics and change the tempo.

Speaking of the lyrics — this line was very special:

“The insecurities can scream like thunder”

Love JC as a judge on AMDC and would love to have seen him be an Idol judge — but this song gets no love from me.

  3. Honestly? Yawn.

It started off well. I thought the lyrics were interesting and certainly applied to Kris, who has been under appreciated IMHO. BUT then it turned into the same repetitive and kind -of-boring refrain. Over. And. Over. It was an effort to keep tuned in.

Listened to it again. Verses okay. Chorus, ugh!

And I know we’ll make it until the end of the line even if we break it one piece at a time. Is the correct term for that a mixed metaphor?

  4. Who is singing this, I thought the vocals were not very good in parts.
Otherwise I kinda liked the song.

  5. If there’s one thing Kris has proved, it’s that he has good taste in music.

And so- big NO to this song. Just no.

  6. Not a horrible song, just rather tedious – was hoping Kris would avoid the obvious cheese factor, though, and he’d have to add in some beats to speed it up, and… well, heck, if it requires rewriting some of the awkward lyrics, changing the tempo, and rearringing, then just forget it. Move along, Kris, back to your home, nothing to see here.

  7. I’m this song has already been rejected. Otherwise why would he put it up now? it doesn’t make sense, does it? If it’s really still being considered, I don’t think he’ll put it up for people to listen to, IMO.

  8. I really like this. It does sound a lot like Ryan Tedder’s work but in a good way. It’s missing something but it still sounds very good.

  9. Who is singing this, I thought the vocals were not very good in parts.
Otherwise I kinda liked the song.

The singer is JC Chasez, one of the original members of ‘N Sync…you know…the boy band group that Justin Timberlake came out of.

  10. i would rather hear this version than anything Kris could possibly do with it.

  11. Not a horrible song, just rather tedious ‘“ was hoping Kris would avoid the obvious cheese factor, though, and he’d have to add in some beats to speed it up,

This would carve a huge dent in all that free lifetime cheese dip he got awarded

If he does include it though(hope he doesnt), it’s better he just sticks to the original..he’s good at that

  12. MJ, you nailed it on the One Republic knock off. I couldn’t even stand to listen to it. I hope to God Kris fills the rest of his album with his own material. This stuff has gotten real old real quick.

  13. This song is pretty mediocre, and JC Chasez is a very average singer. Kris is better than this material for sure.

I do really enjoy JC on the ABDC show though. He seems like a great guy.

  14. There will be nothing like Kris filling his album with his own stuff only. It’s not going to happen, not when you are with 19E. He might have a couple of his own and/or some co-writes on it but fully, big no!. Has that ever happened? None that I know of.

  15. Oh lor. If this is indicative of the standard of material Kris has been getting for his album, I don’t blame the label for going with the Script song.

I hope Kearney, Rudolph and the Fray guy deliver cause JC sure didn’t.

  16. Good lord, absolutely not. If this is the dull mess that they are offering Kris, he would be better off writing his own songs. For goodness sake, don’t sabotage the guy with a bunch of amature wannabe songwriters.

  17. Okay, I know demos are meant to be a wee rough and all, but seriously, this is awful. Just awful. I truly hope this doesn’t make the final cut onto Kris’s album.

With all the song writers that have been mentioned, why this? Strange…

  18. Well, I didn’t think it was that bad. It’s a pretty song. We’ll see…

  19. Would Jiva allow JC post the demo on his website if the song is picked or considered in Kris’ album?

  20. The melody has some potential with a little bit of tinkering, but the lyrics suck.

  21. Wow, from these comments I expected my ears to start bleeding or something…I pretty much nothing it. It’s not a good song, which sucks cuz I like JC and now hope this doesn’t make the CD, but it wasn’t that bad.

  22. so so song. Not very good but not very bad either, just average. I think Kris can makes it more interesting but I hope he has better material than this

  23. To me this doesn’t sound much like Ryan Tedder song but more like a lost track in a Backstreet Boys album. I can see Kris singing it, but I don’t think this should make the album.
It’s too pop and the lyrics are mediocre at best.

  24. BeckyMD, I’m with you on this one.
That was exactly what I said earlier. It is a rejected song and that’s why he’s posted it. I am going to bet on Daughtry, Mat Kearney, Switchfoot and Alex Band for sure to make the cut and his own two songs. I believe that’s the reason why they made him talk about it. And probably some of the songs he recorded in London. They wouldn’t send him there for nothing. I remember Alex Band tweeting about sending more songs to them some few weeks back. I’m sure they loved the collaboration otherwise they wouldn’t ask for more. Which makes me think there was no room for this song at all.

  25. If Jive/19R put this song on Kris’ album, then I will completely believe in the mythical bus I keep reading about.

It will not be on the album, and if it was going to be on the album, we never would have heard the demo.

  26. JC, it’s too late to apologize (it’s tooooo late) for making some One Republic meets boy band song. I mean if one rips off Ryan Tedder, doees one go back in time or something, because it’s a copy of a copy of a copy of…well you get the point.

If Kris choose this song, I guess I could see him singing it if he really stripped it down, but the lyrics would still be all trite. So not getting why Kris would choose someone else’s mediocre song only to work really hard to make it not sound like it originally did so that it wouldn’t suck so much.

  27. BEckyMD and vanjess38, I agree with what you said too. Looks like a rejected song, why would it been posted on his site if it was going on Kris album?

  28. Yuck. This is exactly the kind of song I hope Kris won’t be singing.

  29. Ex-‘NYSNC band member

MJ, I would like to offer my services as a proofreader. I’m sure with all the posting you do, you don’t have time to do it yourself. I work cheap.

  30. As it is I do not like it at all. Maybe if it was changed up a little with some acoustic guitar or maybe rocked up a bit it would be better. But the lyrics…I don’t know?

  31. I like it, and I think JC ought to release it on his OWN album (why not?) with some re-working. JC’s still cute, IMO, and a very articulate judge on ABDC (b/c Lil Mama is inarticulate and Shane is more of a b-boy fanboy, tho, in fairness, he did like We Are Heroes, an all-girl….er…crew).

Anyway…I am not sure there is anything that Kris could do with it (how much more stripped down could it get?), so keep it, JC, rework it, and write and record more songs.

I will admit that it reminded me a bit of Adam’s Want (not his voice, b/c he sounds NOTHING like Adam–I mean the chorus):

    From Want:

    Love is what we want
It’s all that we really need
    Love….(rinse and repeat)

BTW, I like One Republic, and Come Home is a BEAUTIFUL song. Some of the album kind of drags, but some songs are very pretty. Ryan Tedder cannot sing live, however. He is always off-key (I have a video from his album…ugh…and when he was on SYTYCD, same thing).

  32. Q3
It will not be on the album, and if it was going to be on the album, we never would have heard the demo.

I would hope not! He deserves better

  33. suebrody YOU ARE RIGHT, RYAN TEDDER CANNOT SING I JUST LISTENED TO U TUBE “THE LOOK” AND HE WAS OFF KEY OR AS RANDY WOULD SAY A LITTLE PITCHY

  34. I like JC and I like his voice — I just think this is a mediocre song. Mediocre defined as: moderate to inferior in quality.

Q3: It will not be on the album, and if it was going to be on the album, we never would have heard the demo.

Chipmunk: I would hope not! He deserves better

ITA I think Kris deserves songs with lyrics that mean something. He is at his best when he has lyrics that are interesting and substantial. That’s why I love “Heartless” and “ANS” so much.

IMO he also deserved something better than LLWD, too.

  35. I still don’t think this will make to Kris’ album because otherwise we won’t have heard it in JC’s blog.

But LLWD case shows that Jiva might not be as careful as we think it should be – before the name of LLWD leaked out, Jiva should’ve taken Scripts’ version off youtube.

If this song is selected, I’m not sure Kris can twist it and make it more Kris-ish. Remember when we heard LLWD, many of us thought Kris would make it different from Scripts version rather than a straight cover. Of course Scripts version is good as is so one can argue that Kris doesn’t need to change it at all. I think it’s not the same in this JC song.

  36. But LLWD case shows that Jiva might not be as careful as we think it should be ‘“ before the name of LLWD leaked out, Jiva should’ve taken Scripts’ version off youtube.

It wouldn’t have mattered. It is on a lot of CD’s that were sold and that people have. I have it as a bonus track on a Japanese version of “The Script” and it was on the UK CD Single of “We Cry” which is still for sale on Amazon.com. You can even sample The Script’s recording of LLWD on Amazon.com US.

  37. I’m really not sure about it. It’s kinda nice. I love getting all these snippets and previews though!

  38. It makes sense to me that if it was going to be on the album, we probably wouldn’t be hearing it, yet. I really like Kris’s style and tone of voice, and am looking forward to the album. He and Adam are very original, IMO, and bring something so unique to the songs they sing.

  39. i hope it won’t be on Kris’ album. this is so bland. the chorus is too weak. i’ve been waiting for some build-up somewhere..but heard none…it’s so flat. what a drag listening to it! oh, pls God-Jiva, not again!

  40. It seems to me that Jive is really putting more effort into getting Kris a very good debut album than they did the single, IMO. I still believe this song didn’t make it. They have so far kept all songs top secret, not even a jist from interviews apart from titles.
I’m very hopeful Kris is going to have a lot of co-written songs on his album looking at the way they set him up for co-writting sessions even late into their schedule. I think that’s their aim. They even made him write with Lindy Robbins who is known for sending in songs. I think they want him to have a hand in all songs on his album, which is good.

  41. Reminder:

I just edited out the fanwar stuff.

If you make a reference to an Idol who isn’t the subject of the thread, you better have a point. If you’re just baiting and/or playing “my Idol is better than your Idol” your post is going to be deleted. The ENTIRE post.

And that also goes for posters who respond.

That salient point you made in the second paragraph? Oh well!

  42. I didn’t know we’d heard anything from Adam’s album to make that kind of comparison, rockvixen. Can you provide us with a link?

  43. I have to say that I am new to MJ’s this year. I have been reading and storing what she has been suggesting might happen when the show is over. Then I hear something like this and it pops back into my brain. Kind of scary really.

  44. The tune is boring. I like the beginning instrumental though–spare and pretty.

  45. I like the beginning instrumental though’“spare and pretty.

    I liked that part too.

  46. I’m not into the song but Kris might add his own flavor to it and make it sound better. If Kris is getting these kind of demos, I’m now skeptical to know what Adam might have. It’s very possible that he also may have demos/recordings such as this.

  47. I like the melody and words and think that Kris could do something with it. Everything he does has his own stamp on it. I think he would step it up a bit and just Krisify it.

  48. I like the melody and words and think that Kris could do something with it. Everything he does has his own stamp on it. I think he would step it up a bit and just Krisify it.

Like he did with the Scripts song? Sorry, not to be mean, but I say it more as someone who was disappointed because yeah, I was expecting more Krisifying going on, some re-arranging going on. In fact I almost had in my head how he was going to possibly re-arrange it, but I will still expecting to be surprised by what Kris did. So for me (for you) I dont’ want to have Kris waste his time re-arranging someone else’s crappy song when instead he could be doing songs he wrote or co-wrote. See now that is where I want to hear some Kris things happening. Jettison the pale Ryan Tedder crap (which makes it almost transparent in terms of actual originality) and just record Kris being Kris. That’s my thoughts at least.

  49. We all know that none of the AI artists have the final say in what songs are ultimately included on their album. They may have some input but the final decisions are made by the label. I agree with others that this song most likely will not be on the album since it was posted on JC’s blog. None of the other songs in consideration have been posted so it seems highly unlikely this one would. I would have passed also.

  50. Don’t know why people freaks out about this. I’m sure Kris and Adam have received a lot of demos for their albums. This is one.
We don’t even know if it has been selected or not for the album

  51. Like he did with the Scripts song? Sorry, not to be mean, but I say it more as someone who was disappointed because yeah, I was expecting more Krisifying going on, some re-arranging going on.

Unfortunately, that was one of my fears about Kris’s album, especially after seeing what happened to David Cook’s last year.

I was a big fan of Cook’s ability to rearrange songs on idol, not unlike Kris’s ability. But when you’re making an album of new material (well, mostly new material), it’s not the same idea as coming up with interesting covers of great classic material like they did on the show. So the album, by default, can’t really capture part of what originally (imo) made the artists so distinct on the show. JMO, of course.

And FWIW – I don’t expect a song like this will make it on Kris’s album, and I expect we will get some good material that is more in keeping with Kris’s vibe on the show (other than the arranging thing, see above).

  52. One more reminder:

Gratuitous off-topic mentions of your favorite Idol will get your post deleted. We’re talking about Kris and his demos. Please stick to the subject. Thank you.

  53. I wish that another nsync member and fellow Jive label mate would help Kris (namely Justin Timberlake). It’s not impossible, didn’t record at Timbalands studio in Virginia?

As for JC’s stuff, just meh!!

  54. Wow, Ryan wrote this and sounds like Ryan is singing. Is that realllllly Kris? I’m not liking either of Kris’ songs so far dammit and I am a Kradam fan……..I just like Adam more because Kris is toooo bland for me and these two songs aren’t helping me to rush out and buy his album. JMO

  55. I like the melody and words and think that Kris could do something with it. Everything he does has his own stamp on it. I think he would step it up a bit and just Krisify it.

When I first listened, I thought Kris was singing (which is why I wasn’t so sure at first–not because I thought it was Kris, just wasn’t sure about the voice I was hearing). Then I realized it was a demo and not Kris singing the song. I think Kris could make it his own. No doubt about it.

So, the song is okay. Kris would make it much better. Hope that clarifies my point. :)

  56. Wow, Ryan wrote this and sounds like Ryan is singing. Is that realllllly Kris?

No–JC Chasez wrote this song and it’s his voice on this demo.

I wish that another nsync member and fellow Jive label mate would help Kris (namely Justin Timberlake).

I’d be interested in that, too. I could see Kris doing well with a song like “What Goes Around Comes Around.” Didn’t Kris say in his most recent interview with Slezak that he was listening to Justin Timberlake on his iPod?

  57. efm

Wow, Ryan wrote this and sounds like Ryan is singing. Is that realllllly Kris?

No’“JC Chasez wrote this song and it’s his voice on this demo.

Oh haha, if I had read a few posts I would have known that, lol. Just got here and misread what MJ wrote I guess. I wondered how Kris was hitting thos lowwwww notes!

So Ryan is writing for both Kris and Adam. I guess it’s o.k but all Ryan’s songs sound like Apologize? I don’t know his music that well but every song I hear by him sounds very much the same to me……just asking.

  58. If Kris were to record this, it wouldn’t be a cover. This is a demo. Writers do demos for their songs all the time, then submit them to labels for consideration. That’s just how the process works.

Remember Adam’s cover of “Want”. It wasn’t meant to be released.

  59. IMO Kris is way better than this’ ¦. i want him to do well

    He will. :)

  60. This is just a demo that was submitted for Kris, no? I certainly hope that is all it is.

  61. I think the song is pretty enough, but it doesn’t seem suited to Kris’s voice. His lower range is so beautiful and I think this song just wouldn’t highlight that. C’mon songwriters, give him something to sing in his warm deep voice.

  62. I’m [thinking] this song has already been rejected. Otherwise why would he put it up now? it doesn’t make sense, does it? If it’s really still being considered, I don’t think he’ll put it up for people to listen to, IMO.

Maybe JC saw how much attention The Scripts got for their leak of LLWD, so he figured he’d try it too, to give himself some publicity.

As was pointed out earlier, JC co-wrote (with David Archuleta) the song “Don’t Let Go” which made it onto David’s album, but he also wrote another song for David called “Ruined Me” which never made it onto the album. That song is even listed on ASCAP with JC Chasez as a co-writer and Archie as the performer. However, it has never seen the light of day. No leaked YouTube or MP3. No one knows what it sounds like.

My point is that since “Build Some Love” has been leaked, then it is very possible that it will be showing up on Kris’s album. Besides, if it didn’t make it onto the album, it would be doing the future buyer of that song a disservice to leak it. The fact that it has been leaked depreciates its value. Having said that, the opposite is also true. If it has made it onto the album, it does a disservice to Kris to have leaked the demo. Very disrespectful indeed.

    ASCAP link

  63. Poor JC. He just kept living under Justin’s shadow. The truth is, JC has never been good on his own, his debut solo album sucked (it was filled with an unnecessary excess of sexual themes that his target audience was not expecting).

I don’t think his voice sounds like Kris’ at all. And I’m sure Jive had tons of better songs to choose from.

  64. ozarka
Maybe JC saw how much attention The Scripts got for their leak of LLWD

It’s probably just semantics, but I don’t think you can really call the youtube of The Scripts version of LLWD a leak, since it’s been up since January of this year, back when the Idol Season 8 audition episodes were still airing.

And unless the record company is already married to BSM, which seems unlikely (although I do think that Kris could really do something with it) I would say that the leak of the song really does tank its chances to make the album. I would think anyone whose songs are approved for the album is under a strict non-disclosure agreement, and it seems like the leak would violate that.

  65. alxsavage

The truth is, JC has never been good on his own, his debut solo album sucked

Wait, was that the album that Blowin Me Up With Her Love was on? LOL, I loved that song hard, it was my singalong jam for months. But true, not exactly a songwriting masterpiece. But in a totally different vein, Something Special was a really nice song, very sweet yet sexy.

But yeah, JT has completely eclipsed the guy.

  66. OK, not a bad song….just aight. I’m hoping Kris’s jive team is looking at his original material just in case he has a jewel or two among his own work. Other than that, I really want to believe they will be wanting to try to work with the Artist, rather than just push only the material that has not been accepted first by kris!!!
I agree that he would sound good covering JT’s WGACA, but not for a
a debut album!!! timbaland writes some awesome stuff….I’d like to see
    that connection!

  67. sounds like one of those b-side n-sync songs….i dont like the chorus but the begining was nice

hope it wont be on kris’s album…

is jc the lead singer..the dark hair dude? how i loved n-sync in my tweens years…esp bye bye bye

  68. Hey, you guys are harsh. I thought the song was beautiful, especially the verse. The chorus was very boy-bandish as some of you have mentioned but that’s more because of the arrangements, clapping and strings and I don’t know what. Make a raw accoustic version a la the frays of this with strong guitars in the chorus instead (electric guitar solo, why not) and it could be awesome.

  69. I like the opening piano and strings on this. The actual song is plodding at best. The lyrics – I can’t remember a single word after listening 3 times and the chorus reminds me of ‘some song’ that I can’t put my finger on.

I see this came from a JC fan site and there is nothing official about it. He possibly submitted this to Jive, as I’m sure quite a few songwriters (and wannabe songwriters) do. Or one of his fans got hold of this demo and decided it should go to Kris.

I could seriously write a song (hey, I’ve written poetry and I have Garage Band on my computer) and get my nephew’s award winning blues band to record a demo and tweak it a bit. Then I can, or they could, shoot it off to Jive saying it was written for Kris Allen or whomever via registered mail.

There we go … with very little effort I can honestly say that a song I’ve written has been accepted by Jive for inclusion on Kris Allen’s debut album. I can have the demo ‘leaked’ on said nephew’s band site and myspace music. Instant hits for them and maybe a few people will buy their stuff. (It’s actually very good.)

I just checked out the youtube of the song JC wrote for David Archuletta. It stinks to high heaven and is incredibly sing-songy.

Could Kris Allen change up this sample to make it something ok? Most likely. Should he? No.

  70. It’s just a demo sent to Kris in hopes that it might be used. I doubt Kris will use it, but if he did, I agree that he would make it sound better than it does right now.

I doubt it will end up on the album.

  71. I agree with the other posters who said this would be a little blah for Kris and it does sound like Ryan Tedder. It’s very Come Home. I do miss JC’s voice though. I wish he would put out another record.

  72. It’s an okay song, though a bit depressing for my taste. Sounds like something that could end up as a filler track.

  73. I really don’t like the song..I wish they would give Kris a song maybe like Ain’t no Sunshine…He kills that song and makes me cry…Please give Kris a good song! â™ ¥luv him

  74. I think the song is pretty enough, but it doesn’t seem suited to Kris’s voice. His lower range is so beautiful and I think this song just wouldn’t highlight that. C’mon songwriters, give him something to sing in his warm deep voice.

so agree with this…. I wish at least one will showcase this

  75. I like the oppening.. the..first verse..but the chorus.. is a throw away.. I hope they didn’t pick this for his album.

  76. I’m all up for a good ballad now and then, but this is a snore-fest. NEXT!!

If i wasn’t curious before, now I’m practically dying to hear what type of songs are picked for his debut. I think Kris is going to surprise alot of us here (for better or worse)

  77. MJ what I love most about your site is that you do delete the nasty posts unlike some other blogging sites -who shall remain nameless. You are right there is no need for my idol is better than yours. The show is over. They are living their lives now and each and every one of them has a unique sound. No sense in comparing.

As for this song – (Oh no this is the salient point in the second paragraph). It does sound just like a JC Chasez song!! Especially the end. I could picture this being sung by N Sync…lol..

I’m sure this is just a demo and he won’t lead with it. It’s not bad, but it’s not good either. It’s forgetable. When Kris finds the right song he hits it well. He just needs the right material and this isn’t it.

  78. Maybe I should put my “tinfoil hat” on, but I like this song! I was like “dang, how can I rip this tune to my iPOD?”

I guess I like soppy singalongs; I used to groove to N’Sync stuff too back in the day; even attended 2 concerts! I know, sillyness. But if I could rip this tune from the internet, I would! If it was on iTunes, I’d DL it! OK, let me have it now….. I can take it!

  79. I like the beginning of it and the first chorus. I think Kris would sound wonderful on that part, at least.
