Idols on the Billboard 2009 Year-End Chart

I know many of you have been waiting for this thread, and I apologize for taking so long!     Billboard released their year-end and decade-end charts last week.

Here’s the massive Idol Billboard Chart for 2009 (it runs Nov. to Nov.) and it’s chock full of Idol goodness!   I’m working on the decade-end chart right now–it’s coming soon, I promise!

Kelly Clarkson, David Cook, Daughtry and Carrie Underwood are all over the chart.

Jennifer Hudson is well represented on the R&B charts.   Mandisa rocks the Christian charts.   And there are also appearances by David Archuleta, Jordin Sparks, Phil Stacey, Kellie Pickler and even Constantine Maroulis and Jared Cotter (Top 24 contestant, co-wrote “Down” for Jay Sean) and Chris Sligh (co-writer of the Rascal Flatts hit, “Here Comes Goodbye”)

For a compare-and-contrast, check out the 2008 chart HERE.

  1. Nice thanks for the Charts. The Idols did pretty good for themselves this year.

  2. Yeah for American Idol that cheesy little show and the contestants from it.

  3. Thanks for putting this up! Good to see so many of them all over the chart!

  5. I find it interesting that the top 2 from Season 7 were all over the 2008 chart, but nobody from season 8 is on the 2009 chart. I guess there isn’t a mystery as to why this year’s crew’s numbers seem pretty low. The buying public just aren’t as interested in them. It’s too bad, I think Kris, Adam & Allison are pretty talented.

The chart goes from November to November. It’s too early for Season 8 contestants to be appearing on the chart. Next year.

Isn’t this mostly due to Cook and Archie’s AI post finale itunes sales? I mean that is where the 13 and 7 charting singles come from….surprised that Adam and Kris did not make this chart because iirc they each had multiple hot 100 entries of their AI downloads after the finale….and of course TOML and Crush were huge hits and were out for quite a while during 2008.

Maybe because it takes a lot of charted singles to make the list, and AI8 idols have only released a couple each …. I’m sure they will do better next year when they have actually released more singles.

Well, the chart-year cut-off is the same week every year. So it’s not really that it’s “too early” for the S8 crew to make it onto the year-end wrap-up, since contestants from prior seasons have done it immediately following their Idol season. But as we’ve known for awhile now, the Top 2 from S7 had a much larger and more immediate impact on the charts than the finalists this year. S7 far outsold S8 with their Idol tracks, and both TOML and Crush had significant radio and sales success in 2008. So it’s somewhat jarring when you compare the annual charts from 2008 and 2009, but not terribly surprising IMO. They’ll be there in 2010.

Yes, hopefully they will be on next year’s charts However, both David Cook and David Archuleta were on Billboard’s 2008 charts. It’s posted here in the Archives. Here is just a sampling of last year’s charts (to support ladymadonna’s post) showing the Davids. I’ve not included Carrie, Jordan, Daughtry, etc, but they were all over the charts as well.

  11. Wow. That’s impressive. Go Idols. Congratulations to David Cook and David Archuleta. They really have done well outside the bubble. Love Kelly, so it’s nice to see her there.

Last year, MJ had a post for the 2008 and both the Davids were there. DC was also #8 Top new artist and Archie was #10. DC was also #28 Hot Digital Artist. Both the Davids were on the BB charts — DC for “Time of My Life” and Archie for Cook. So yeah, I’d say S7 not only had sales but also radio play.

eta: Too slow. Yeah, The Davids were a force in 2008 and in 2009. And given that they both have albums in 2010, I’m sure they’ll continue to be a force.

Also, yay for JHud and Jordin.

  12. David Cook also made it to #23 for the Decade, but I can’t remember for what!

  13. I think several other Idols were on the BB decade charts besides David. Did I miss those? I don’t see those anywhere, just the year-end.

  14. Actually, I think TOML was #23 somewhere on the decade charts, it’s slowly coming to me.

  15. I do love seeing the proliferation of Idols all over the EOY charts each year. There’s been so much commentary in recent seasons about whether Idol is losing its mojo. But when you look at how many different alumns are peppered across so many different genres, it illustrates the fact that Idol is indeed still a force in the industry, and has quite a good track record all things considered. I mean, having six different artists appear in the top 100 album sellers of the year, and having four of the 40 overall top artists (which combines album sales, single sales, airplay, and streaming) is pretty damn amazing.

  16. Actually, I think TOML was #23 somewhere on the decade charts, it’s slowly coming to me.

IndyMuse, I’m enjoying watching your thought processes at work. LOL!

  17. Wow! With three recurring songs on the charts, I thought David Cook would do well but this is even better than I could have imagined. I’m so happy for him.

It was a great year for a lot of Idol alum. Congrats to them all.

  18. Go Cook!! That’s my boy. I’m betting he’s particularly thrilled with the ranking on rock artist and rock album… Yay for DCTR and the man~

About last year versus this one. To be fair, both singles charting from S7 were summer releases. This year we didn’t see a single before October for Kris and mid-November for Adam (and who knows when for Allison…) So the cutoffs do make a difference to my mind at least.

And, yes I’m forgetting (or trying to) the disaster that had No Boundaries for both Kris and Adam… For a whole host of reasons, I don’t think it’s fair to count that as a song for either of them.

  19. I think several other Idols were on the BB decade charts besides David. Did I miss those? I don’t see those anywhere, just the year-end.

LOL IndyMuse. Yep, TOML (after charting in the Top 10 for both 2008 and 2009) did come in as the #23 Adult Contemporary song of the Decade. Kelly, Carrie, Daughtry, Fantasia, and a number of other Idols also made a significant impact on the End of Decade charts. MJ said in her OP that she’s working on a post for that list too, so I’m guessing there will be additional opportunity to marvel at the staying power of the Rainbow that would not die. :)

  20. And, yes I’m forgetting (or trying to) the disaster that had No Boundaries for both Kris and Adam’ ¦

weareallinnocent, you put your finger on one of main the reasons for Kris and Adam not making the charts. TOML was a monster for David Cook, while NoBo went nowhere. Also, Cook’s AI performances charted very well, which helped him on the digital charts.

But to clarify, Light On was not released to I-Tunes until the last few days of Sept. with first sales totals reported the week ending October 5, 2008 so I consider it a fall release. I don’t follow Kris that closely, but I’m assuming that Cook’s Light On did have an extra 3 weeks or so over Kris’s LLWD?

  21. Oh yes, definitely wordnerdarchie. I was speaking of ToML as a Summer release when actually it was end of May. I wasn’t meaning to refer to Light On at all when speaking of the charted releases (mainly because it’s not a chart topper, though I do love it myself. :-))

  22. Thanks weareallinnocent for clearing that up for me. Whew! You had me scratching my head. :) Sorry that I misunderstood your post. I don’t know what I was thinking. I think I’ll go back to watching the latest Vlog.

  23. LOL, well, that Vlog is precious! So, yeah, me too. Thanks for reminding me~

  24. So, so good to see my fave, David Cook, all over these year end charts!!
Though I’m happy for every artist there who does well, I’m esp happy for Cookie, and I, too, think I’ll go watch his vlog again.

  25. Gulp! Why is it just hitting me that we’re ending the 1st decade for the 2000s. It just seems like people were wondering what we would call the 2000s and whether or not all computer generated power (Y2K) would fail. LOL!

Back OT, congrats to all idols a true pop culture phenom of this decade!!!

On a more personal fav note, yay DC!!!!! Woot!

  26. Thanks for the post, MJ. I do love seeing all of the Idols all over, in so many genres. And the Billboard charts are harder to read this year than last year—gotta love the “improvements”—so I appreciate the chart.

Ahh, Magic Rainbow. How your staying power does entertain me.

  27. Great to see so many Idols continuing to do well. Especially exciting for me to see David Cook all over these 2009 Billboard Charts. If my radar is in tune, I think he will be even more so next year.

  28. Congratulations to all who’ve charted! But, most especially, congratulations to David Cook! I’m looking forward to a great sophomore album for him and the band. One of my favs of the IDOL singer/songwriter/musicians. He worked hard and I respect that. Well-deserved.

  29. Sorry, MJ, didn’t see your OP that the decade stuff was still coming.

  30. Congrats to all the Idols, but I gotta let out a HUGE woo-hoo to David Cook, my favorite Idol ever. I may even give the ol’ rainbow a spin to commemorate. :-)

  31. MJ I remember last year at this time when the David’s did well on those charts that you predicted they would do well on this years..guess you were right!

DC’s post-AI Hot 100 explosion STILL blows my mind. I wonder if anyone will ever break that record.

  32. DC’s post-AI Hot 100 explosion STILL blows my mind. I wonder if anyone will ever break that record.

Oh yeah, it’ll fall eventually. Records are made to be broken, and chart records go down all the time. Cook’s Digital Songs record was broken after barely a year (though it took Michael Jackson’s death to do it). But yeah, that Hot 100 achievement is incredible. I love revisiting that particular chart. And if I were ever to get drunk and stupid and decide to get a numbery tattoo (like Dave’s mysterious “14”), it would be a very discreet 941,999.

  33. Yay for Phil with “You’re Not Shaken!” The song has indeed impacted many, including myself, with what my family and I have been going through. Looking forward to more great songs from him, and another busy schedule for 2010.

  34. Congratulations to all idols. Of course I’m am particularly happy to see Cook on all those charts!

  35. CONGRATULATIONS to all the idols that made the list!!! And esp. David Cook since S7 was my very first season with AI and he got my votes every week!

  36. Great tribute to how well David Cook’s music did over time– just songs that succeed as *songs*, and keep growing.

I also have fave tunes by Carrie, Daughtry, J Hud, Kelly and Archie –this cheesy show has provided a hella enjoyable music!

  37. It’s so much fun to be a David Cook fan and part of the reason is that, in the parlance of the sports he loves, “he puts up numbers.” From the # of songs he threw onto the itunes charts, to the % of his win, to the insane # of concerts in his tour, and now to these charts, he puts up numbers. Even now, Xmas notwithstanding, he still has three singles playing steadily on the radio. “3” can be an impressive #, too, in some circumstances. :) For a competitive little twerp like me (and him), it’s fun to follow his number-ly goodness.

And as fun as it is for Cook fans, it must be a blast for Carrie’s fans! Talk about putting up numbers, the girl’s an All-Star player.

  38. Congrats to all the Idols, but I gotta let out a HUGE woo-hoo to David Cook, my favorite Idol ever. I may even give the ol’ rainbow a spin to commemorate. :-)

This just cracked me up because… I just got home from dropping my kids off at school and was feeling nostalgic so listened to the ol’ Magic Rainbow. Hee! These charts are fun for this David Cook fan – what a great year he had last year. And what a great year *I* got to have going to so many shows on his tour!

  39. maturin, me too!

I also have fave tunes by Carrie, Daughtry, J Hud, Kelly and Archie ‘“this cheesy show has provided a hella enjoyable music!

My iPod is loaded with some fantastic music from an assortment of Idols – good stuff. And turn on the radio and see how long you go without something from an Idol… they are everywhere :)

  40. Thanks MJ for this thread. What an awesome year for David Cook, my only Idol ever. What an awesome year for us, his fans. WTG Cookie.

  41. I’m so happy to see David Cook so high on the year end charts. He is my favorite ever from AI, and I knew he did very well this year. Even though I know it’s amazing for a new artist to go platnum, I saw some of the sales for the other Idol winners first cd that seemed higher. But I see that the rankings for the singles are high, having 3 singles in the top 40 for a good part of the year and headlining a 9 month tour is incredible, especially for a new artist.

I also was concerned about them not releasing another single, but see that the ones that they did release were doing so well, that’s probably why they didn’t release another one. It seemed like RCA was releasing more singles for other AI artists, but from the year end listings I’ve seen, they weren’t on the charts for as long as Davids were, so maybe if a single is really doing well, they don’t release another right away. Looking forward to the new cd and am hoping it will be a huge hit and to hear from him for a long time.

The thing about David Cook being on the 2008 charts more is because he already had a platnum single (TOML) by this time last year, because he got it on the New Years Eve show. No Boundaries wasn’t the hit that TOML was.

I like Adam and Kris and hope both their cds do well, which I think they are. Considering how hard it is for a new artist to even get a song on the charts at all, they are doing terrific. They may be having a slower start than the Davids did last but hopefully they will continue to build.

  42. I may even give the ol’ rainbow a spin to commemorate. :-)

LOL Well, that seems a little extreme. ;-) But that’s coming from someone who worked extremely hard to get the rainbow out of rotation, seeing how it’s my daughter’s FAVORITE! (She’s only 4, so magic rainbows are all the rage, don’tcha know. Lucky for me, she also loves Adam, but these days she’s demanding Michael Jackson. Girl’s got great taste in music, I’d say!)

And, yes, it is so incredibly fun being a fan of David Cook!

  43. Congratulations to all our idols! It’s a true testiment to the quality of talent from the show. Love..love..love David Cook!!! He is my all time favorite idol, I didn’t miss one episode of season 7. He is so talented and puts on the best live performance I have ever seen. Keep up the good work David, I can’t wait for your new album.

  44. Congrats to all the Idols!!! David Cook is my fave so I’m especially proud of him. I do have a question though. Who is Jay Sean? I don’t remember him.
