Idols In Concert – Stats – 12/31/15

Happy New Year’s Eve everyone!

I thought we’d have nothing to report this week, but our reality singing show competitors have been busy entertaining America. Pentatonix from “The Sing Off” performed at the Star 94 Jingle Jam in Atlanta while Idols Casey Abrams, Haley Reinhart and Joey Cook were featured performers at Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox concerts. Chase Rice from Survivor sold out his solo concert in Pittsburgh and the America’s Got Talent crew took their show on the road to New Jersey.

No numbers thread tomorrow.

Let’s look at a few copyright related posts from Billboard. It’s not news that X-Factor’s biggest success, One Direction, is about to take a break from being a band…but what has their fans excited are copyright notifications. Harry Stiles has 40 songs credited to his name, but ASCAP recently registered four songs he wrote and is credited with being the solo performer on…could this be the basis for his first solo album. Titles so far are “5378 Miles,” “Already Home,” “Coco” and “Endlessly.”

In other copyright news, CBS’s mega-successful comedy “The Big Bang Theory” (which airs against “The Voice” in the early fall) is getting sued over a lullaby that is frequently sung to soothe Sheldon – “Soft Kitty”. The song has been sung 8 times on the show and has become a signature of the show (featured on merchandise, subject of a CBS contest and sung at Comic-Con). Normally, I roll my eyes at these suits because they are usually based on a few notes or words being the same to some obscure work, but this one is totally legit. This is an actual song and apparently, CBS did not contact the correct rights holders, have not credited the songwriter and did not request the rights for using the song on merchandise. Probably because CBS lawyers think the same as most of the show’s fans – that the creators of TBBT wrote the song. Oops. Time to pay-up.
