Idols In Concert – Stats – 11/06/14

Fifth Harmony team up with youth sensation Austin Mahone and boy-band Midnight Red for this year’s Z Festival in Brazil. These concerts are aimed directly at Generation Z (we’ve had X, we’ve had Y and now Z…we’ve run out of letters for the Next Gen). Fifth Harmony was a girl-group formed from single singers on the second season of the US version of the X-Factor. They went on to finish third.

Mandisa, the seventh place finisher from Season 5, opens with Sidewalk Prophets for Casting Crowns in Fresno.

  1. There must not be a lot of Generation Z kids in Brasilia, huh? That’s a pretty low % of capacity

ETA: I guess we could start doubling up on letters — the next bunch could be Generation AA (like the batteries, lol)

  4. in case anyone missed it, I posted the official SS album sales #s in yesterday’s sales thread

  5. Emblem3 now has 10 appearances on the BB 200.

Taylor Swift now has 83 songs that have charted on the Hot 100/Bubbling Under!

  6. If you open at 23k and have no radio play, three weeks on the BB 200 is about right. You might get four weeks if the bottom end is selling really low.

This is disappointing — as XFUSA alumni go, they are such a plausible act to have a shot at mainstream acceptance! — but if labels WILL NOT learn that reality show winners require promotion in the current era, then these results are predictable. At least they got a top 10 opening week, which is nothing to sneeze at.

  9. how can Emblem3 have 10 appearances on the BB Top 200 chart when they’ve only put out 2 or 3 albums/EPs?

Do you mean they have charted on 10 different BB charts (including the smaller genre charts)?

  10. They’ve released 3 albums/EPs that have charted on the BB200.
    #1 = 8 weeks
    #2 & 3 = 1 week each

  11. I don’t want to speak for others, but for me, 10 appearances would mean 10 separate, unrelated chartings. Not the number of weeks an album stays on the chart. One album could be considered to chart twice if it was re-released or otherwise re-energized due to outside factors.

  12. I agree. The following link has the last update for how many Idol alums have #1’s on Billboard. There are 345 BB #1’s. In the article, Carrie has 62 #1’s. However, it states that her album, Some Hearts was #1 for 41 weeks. If Billboard had counted every week an album is #1 plus her #1 singles, she would definitely have more than 62 #1’s (even if this link is from 2012).

That’s why I don’t think number of weeks an album is on the charts should count.

    http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/tv-film/1093942/american-idol-tenth-anniversary-345-billboard-no-1s-from-kelly

  13. Appearances means simply that: appearances. Billboard is a weekly thing with a new issued date. In this case, 10 appearances from a combination of 3 albums made the BB 200. With someone like Taylor Swift, 3 albums produces many, many more appearances!

  14. Yup, your definition is how Bill Werde always used “appearances,” and he is the recognized guru of Billboard statistics, the person who did all the number-crunching to establish what we know about BB records.

In most fields, anybody who wanted to set up a new definition would have to justify it and recrunch the data so that it’s all comparable over time.

  15. Well.. Looks like UYH is done. What’s next? I’m guessing album number 3.

  17. YOUR TOP 15: Taylor Swift continues to be a retail monolith in her second week at #1; assuming a 75% or so decline, Tay Tay will descend from the stratospheric to the merely gigantic. Meanwhile, a number of last night’s CMA winners and performers scoot their boots into the Top 15. Here’s how it looks headed into the weekend.

    Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 385-410k
    Now 52 (NOW) 65-70k
    Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 30-35k
    *Calvin Harris (Columbia) 30-35k
    Barbra Streisand (Columbia) 30-35k
    Sam Hunt (MCA Nashville) 27-30k
Florida Georgia Line (Republic Nashville) 27-30k
    Sam Smith (Capitol) 24-27k
    *Bette Midler (Atlantic) 21-24k
Blake Shelton (Warner Bros. Nashville) 21-24k
    Miranda Lambert (RCA Nashville) 19-22k
    Neil Diamond (Capitol) 19-22k
    Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga (Columbia/Interscope) 19-22k
    Slipknot (Roadrunner) 18-21k
    Brantley Gilbert (Valory) 18-21k

In other news, the Democratic Party had a fairly underwhelming week at retail, but is very excited about its 2016 release. (11/6p)
